Pyrus Fairmane

The Will of the Law, Left Hand of Geryon

The vast savannas are the dominion of towering, colossal beasts and ferocious predators that adhere only to the order and law of nature. Yet the greater threat lurks within their shadows: the venomous, conniving snake that seeks to strike at the heels of the most valiant and honorable. Or, the agent of chaos that spreads seeds of dissent, corrupting even the most devout of code, honor, and justice. Yet, the Menseya keep a watchful eye over the lands, striking quickly at the snakes and burning the seeds of chaos that wish to weaken the order and sanctity of natural and divinely ordained Law. For there are none more fearless, more honorable, or more trusted than the daughters of Pyrus Fairmane, the Will of the Law.

Pyrus was a patron of warriors, protectors, and leaders who held themselves against the high standard of the Law and sought to take action against evil, chaos, and deceit. He was always depicted as a towering, winged Leonin adorned sparingly in flexible orange-hued armor. He often was depicted wielding a sword in his left hand, a reflection of his position as the enforcer of The Legislator’s will. While primarily worshipped by the Leonin and Tabaxi people of the Pridelands, he was similarly worshipped by scholars and lawmakers as an aspect of Geryon. For while the Legislator was the foundation upon which the divine Law was built, Pyrus was its beating heart and the walls that shielded those within his charge.

Of Chaos, Snakes, and the Menseya

Long ago, Pyrus brought the people of The Pridelands under the leadership, tutelage, and honor of Moralis. The reshaping and unification of the Pridelands did not go unnoticed… or unchallenged. For where order stands pristine, there is chaotic and deceitful scum that lurk in the shadows, searching for cracks. Kaos and Faust proved to be challengers to Pyrus’ pursuit of orderly, balanced, Law in his lands. Followers of The Fool infested settlements with chaos, ignorance, folly, and excessive merriment. However, such trysts were easily remedied. The followers of Faust were far more malicious. They sought to cheat, steal, manipulate, and dominate, and their venom was far more tedious to remove. To a follower of Pyrus, the greatest insult was to refer to another as a snake in the grass.

Despite being divine, Pyrus could not protect the Pridelands alone, for he was but one man. And Pyrus was a man weak to a strong, confident woman. The Consorts of Pyrus Fairmane are well documented as they were revered members of society in the Pridelands. From these unions, winged Leonin were born for the first time in centuries. Infused with a fraction of Pyrus’ strength and ferocity, they were naturally inclined to serve Pyrus as protectors of the Pridelands and the Law. Pyrus’ daughters became known as the Menseya (or the Valkyries), a group of warrior women who served as an extension of their father’s will. Reinforced by the unity and ferocity of his Pride, Pyrus became the wall that guarded the weak from both the strong and the snakes that sought to abuse them.

Fall To Corruption

After the Barrier, war spread across Jalasar. Desperate to preserve the peace and order that he and Geryon had built, Pyrus remained fiercely loyal and committed. Yes, war brought about desperate times, but it was not a suitable excuse for desperate measures. Those of the Pridelands were still expected to remain honorable, to persist as pristine, untarnished mirrors reflecting the beauty of the Law. But Pyrus himself was not infallible. When his dream – Geryon’s dream – was threatened, Pyrus became nearly fanatical in defending it… and he did not notice how detached and distant Geryon had become. Pyrus was oblivious to how his foundation was crumbling and how inconsistent he became in his enforcement of the Law he demanded his people honor.

The threat to the Pridelands was an external one, or so Pyrus believed. The glint of his drawn blade in the sun was no longer associated with the defence of the innocent, but rather with the execution of the sinful. When criticism came from the jeweled lands of Ira Xand, Pyrus drew his blade. When any of Faust’s people dared venture into the Pridelands, the blade was covered in blood. Unpredictable, law-breaking, cheaters could not be left alive. But what of Geryon? Who was to hold Moralis accountable? Pyrus did not listen and in his inconsistent march, he failed to see the drawn blades among his own Pride. The Law cracking and his creed faltering, Pyrus’ corruption consumed him.

Tenets of Faith

Mirror of the Balanced Law – The Law is a living entity, often precariously balanced. Become a clear reflection of the Law; embody the most fundamental aspects of balance, order, and peace. Strive to uphold its tenets. Seek retribution as often as you seek mercy. Encourage reflection and atonement in oneself and others. Perfection is unattainable, but balance is achievable.

The Obligation of the Strong – The strong bear the responsibility to protect the weak, but so too must they nurture and educate the weak so that they might one day join the ranks of the strong. The Pride is only as strong as its weakest warrior. The Pride is only as intelligent as its least educated child. The order of the Pridelands is only as solid as the most blurry, imbalanced reflection of that order.

Make Honor Thy Creed – Strive to be honorable in the eyes of the Pride. Honor takes many forms, and it is the responsibility of each individual to pursue the form of honor most fitting. Hunters must pursue prey with mercy and skill. Craftsman must uphold standards of quality and market their wares fairly. Leaders must both hear and listen, seeking compromise where needed and a firm resolution when necessary.
