Zmarak Fairmane
Across the Pridelands, the children of Pyrus Fairmane were easily identified by their wings. While the daughters of Pyrus joined the ranks of the Menseya, the lion god’s sons often became scholars, scribes, shamans, or mystics. And for all the wisdom they harbored, half of Pyrus’ sons were consumed by madness… or were born with it. Zmarak was born in the Pride Halls as the younger twin brother of a future Menseya. It is said that the night after his birth, Zmarak was found with a snake coiled around his throat and was barely saved from an early grave. Despite the ill omen, Zmarak quickly proved himself as a son of Pyrus. From a young age, he had an eccentric connection to a diverse array of magic: divine, druidic, a hint of arcane, and a bit of something otherworldly. As a child, Zamark served as the shamanistic leader of the Pride Halls, reading omens and offering wisdom well beyond his years.
And then the madness beset him. His sister found him near the shore consumed by a maddening delirium, eyes glossed over and lips moving in a constant stream of unintelligible nonsense as he swayed around a fire… blood dripping from his back. For in the depths of his madness, Zmarak cut off his wings. In the decades that followed, Zmarak’s wisdom was believed to be lost within the cage of a madman. While he retained a position in the Pride Halls, his prophecies were dismissed as the delusions of a hollow man. Yet, on rare occasions, perhaps there are the echoes of truth etched upon the ramblings of madness. One must merely find them.
We do not soar above the masses because of blind obedience.
