The Healing Concord

The Healing Concord is a charity dedicated to providing all kinds of medical aid which operates throughout Magicians' End. It has a research branch as well as the more public facing and practical outreach services it provides. Currently, the headquarters are based in Jebbin City.
The organisation was founded more than three thousand years ago in the era of the Second Popular Ascendancy by Jain Carmello, a mage from Ralsimoor. It started with a small group of like minded healers, sharing a common ideal to reconcile magical and traditional techniques for improving health care. The Concord grew slowly but steadily over centuries until it acquired the world wide recognition it has today. Now, the charity operates hospitals in all the major cities on three continents and is trusted by the governments of the Trans-Oceanic Empire, the Alchemical Assembly and the Congress of Concerned Citizens alike.

Structure

The Healing Concord recruits from a wide range of society, selecting only those capable of passing a stringent entrance exam. Young potential healers are exposed to a core curriculum consisting of formal, theoretical and practical training at one of the Concord's hospitals. At least three apprenticeship terms must follow, with students assigned to peripatetic healers to learn under their close supervision.

Some will fail to satisfy their instructors or find that the life of a healer does not suit them but for those that continue, practitioners are ultimately assigned to one of four "colleges", each with their own career structure.

Triage

Triage healers are expected to advocate for their patients, maintaining a professional balanced overview of their health. They will deal with relatively routine and minor matters and they may delegate to specialists from one of the other colleges where appropriate. Triage healers must develop a thorough knowledge of herbal and magical medicines and the patterns of typical and unusual diseases and disorders.

Surgery

Surgical healers specialise in the performance of operations that require hospitalisation. Their work is divided into different sub-specialities.

Mentalism

Mentalists deal with disorders of the mind. They use many techniques but dream therapy is the most common one.

Research

Some of the most talented and perspicacious healers join the research college, where they analyse and develop new treatments.
The Healing Concord has a fairly flat organisational structure, based more on the idea of mutual aid and collaboration than the imposition of hierarchical rules. At the most senior level, the Concord Committee (aka the "CC") sets the global policy of the group. The Committee elects a spokesperson from within their numbers called the Concord Speaker (a name often shortened within the organisation to the "CS"). The CS represents the interests of the Healing Concord to the wider world.

Culture

The early members of the Healing Concord were drawn from both magic users and strict adherents to the principles of the Defenders of the Common Grace in almost equal measure, united by their admiration for Jain Carmello and his great work, Grace, Spirit & Healing which was the foundational text for the organisation.
The Concord is not just about healing, it is also about forging bonds of mutual respect and interest between mages and the common people. But providing medicine, help and support for the sick, remains the primary goal of the Healing Concord.

History

The mage Jain Carmello conceived of the idea for a public medical charity in the early years of the Second Popular Ascendancy. After the great success of his five volume work, Grace, Spirit & Healing, he was encouraged to promote the agenda of reconciliation between magic and common grace through healing which was advocated in his books.
By founding the Healing Concord, Jain Carmello provided a practical expression of this philosophy, an inspiration to those like minded individuals who were drawn to his way of thinking.
During the Age of Shadows when mages were still generally distrusted, only those working for the Purifiers Guild and the Healing Concord were universally respected. Towards the end of this period, a famous event known as the Vigil of Mirrors made unexpected heroes and heroines of a humble group of healers from the Concord and indirectly enhanced the reputation of the entire charity in the minds of the common folk.
After the coup, in which Ixthamon seized political control of the world and when Ralsimoor was effectively destroyed, the Healing Concord moved its headquarters to Jebbin City, where it remains today.
