Icecrown

Summary

Once a bleak glacier and now a fortress of death, Icecrown is the black heart of Northrend. Shrouded in endless winter and crowned by the Frozen Throne, this zone was the seat of the Lich King’s power. Towering citadels of black stone loom over blighted fields and soul-scarred skies. Even with the fall of Arthas, the dead still walk in the shadows of his legacy.

Notable Landmarks:

  • Icecrown Citadel – The vast and terrible fortress built into the glacier itself. Home to the Lich King’s throne, the upper spire held the Frozen Throne while lower halls brimmed with undead horrors.
  • The Frozen Throne – A jagged seat of cursed ice where the Helm of Domination once bound the will of the Scourge. Arthas Menethil fell here, ending one dark chapter—only for new questions to rise.
  • The Shadow Vault – Once the seat of a powerful Scourge baron, now claimed by the Knights of the Ebon Blade. A launching point for assaults on the Citadel.
  • Sindragosa’s Fall – The crash site and resting place of the frost wyrm queen Sindragosa, her haunting presence still lingering over the icebound ruin.
  • The Argent Tournament Grounds – A war camp turned cultural proving ground where champions were selected to storm Icecrown.
  • Corp’rethar, the Horror Gate – The Scourge’s outer defense, where waves of undead spilled from monstrous siege constructs.

Relevant Factions:

  • The Scourge (remnants) – Though leaderless after the Lich King’s fall, the Scourge still festers. Undead warlords and mindless husks wander the glacier.
  • The Knights of the Ebon Blade – Former death knights now committed to hunting their kin. They hold strategic ground and sanctified halls across Icecrown.
  • The Argent Crusade – Crusaders of the Light who led the charge into the Citadel. Their banners still flutter near the Tournament Grounds and scattered outposts.
  • The Cult of the Damned – Fanatical remnants continue dark rituals in secluded crypts, yearning to resurrect a new champion of undeath.
  • The San’layn – Vampiric elves once loyal to the Lich King, whose ambitions may still smolder among the ruins.

Historical Notes:

  • The Fall of the Lich King took place here, when heroes breached Icecrown Citadel and defeated Arthas atop the Frozen Throne.
  • Bolvar Fordragon assumed the mantle of jailer to the Scourge, preventing another uncontrolled outbreak—until the breaking of the Helm during later events.
  • Icecrown remains haunted not only by the undead, but by the trauma of a war that reshaped the very balance between life and death.
