Borean Tundra
Summary
Windswept and vast, the Borean Tundra forms the southwestern frontier of Northrend. It is a land of permafrost plains, geysers, and frozen coastline where new arrivals first made landfall during the war against the Lich King. Though it may appear barren, this land is fiercely contested and riddled with danger both ancient and emergent.
Notable Landmarks:
- Warsong Hold – A massive fortress of the Horde, buried deep into the tundra’s crust and reinforced with iron and stone. This served as Garrosh Hellscream’s command post during the Northrend campaign.
- Valiance Keep – The Alliance’s stronghold along the coast, a fortified port city brimming with supplies, reinforcements, and scouts.
- Coldarra – A floating spire wreathed in arcane storm, severed from the mainland by magic. It is the lair of the blue dragonflight and site of the Nexus.
- The Geyser Fields – A volatile expanse of steam vents and unstable terrain, where air elementals and strange fauna clash.
Relevant Factions:
- The Horde (Warsong Offensive) – Led by Garrosh Hellscream, this brutal vanguard spearheaded the Horde’s northern expansion.
- The Alliance (Valiance Expedition) – Under the banner of King Varian Wrynn, the Alliance launched coordinated strikes from this beachhead.
- The Blue Dragonflight – Isolated in Coldarra, under the watch of the unhinged Malygos, they turned on mortal magic-users in a war called the Nexus War.
- The Tuskarr Tribes – Peaceful fisherfolk who dwell along the coasts, often caught between greater powers.
- The Nexus War combatants – The Kirin Tor and red dragonflight clashed with the blue dragons here, threatening magical equilibrium.
Historical Notes:
- Borean Tundra was among the first Northrend territories reconnected to the wider world after the Scourge's spread.
- The Nexus War was launched here, as Malygos attempted to redirect all ley lines, sparking a war that shook Azeroth’s magical foundations.
- The war against the Lich King saw this zone as a key strategic staging ground for both Horde and Alliance efforts.
