Dragonblight
Summary
The frozen heart of Northrend, Dragonblight is both a graveyard and a battlefield. Beneath its snow-covered plains lie the bones of countless dragons who came here to die—a sacred resting place watched over by the remaining dragonflights. But peace is a fragile dream in Dragonblight, where ancient powers stir and the shadows of the Lich King fall long and cold.
Notable Landmarks:
- Wyrmrest Temple – A titanic spire built by the titans, serving as the sacred meeting place of the five dragonflights. It became a key bastion during the Nexus and Scourge Wars.
- The Dragonshrines – Ancient burial sites for each flight: Ruby, Azure, Emerald, Bronze, and Obsidian. Many have been desecrated by the Scourge, cultists, or time anomalies.
- Angrathar, the Wrathgate – A massive gate leading into Icecrown. Site of a historic battle between the Horde, Alliance, and Scourge—and later, the infamous Forsaken betrayal.
- The Mirror of Dawn – A sacred site bathed in perpetual light, where the red dragonflight watched over the Ruby Dragonshrine.
- Galakrond’s Rest – The colossal fossil of the proto-dragon Galakrond, father of all dragonkind. His lingering essence remains a potent and terrifying presence.
Relevant Factions:
- The Dragonflights – Wyrmrest Temple served as a neutral base for the red, bronze, green, blue, and black flights to unite against shared threats.
- The Scourge – Plague the region, attacking dragonshrines and attempting to corrupt or raise fallen dragons as skeletal wyrms.
- The Knights of the Ebon Blade – Former Scourge death knights turned against their master. Their first act of rebellion began in Dragonblight after breaking free of the Lich King’s control.
- The Cult of the Damned – Active at the Wrathgate and in the shadow of Icecrown, they continue their fanatical service to undeath.
- The Horde & Alliance – Both factions waged war across the region, culminating in the Wrathgate incident and the assault on Icecrown.
Historical Notes:
- The Battle of the Wrathgate marked a turning point in the war against the Lich King—and a betrayal by the Forsaken that fractured the Horde’s unity.
- The unity of the dragonflights during this time was fleeting, as the events of the Nexus War and later Deathwing’s return would strain their cooperation.
- Galakrond’s looming fossil remains a dire reminder of what dragons can become without balance—and hints at primordial horrors yet to surface.
