The Raakata System

The Dark Ages are a time lost to history. Humanity was a galactic-spanning civilisation using advanced technology and social development to attain mastery of the Galaxy itself, then something happened to topple the supremacy of Humanity around the 25th Millennium. The Galaxy entered what is commonly known as 'The Age of Strife' which lasted for thousands of years during which time the majority of Humanity (and other species) suffered greatly and much was lost.
No known historical records survive from this era. Humans arrived during the Age of Strife. It is believed that the colonists arrived in sleeper ark ships, traveling at near-relativistic velocities, avoiding the impassable Warp (during the Age of Strife). Scholars believe that these colonists committed to travel for hundreds, or even thousands of years at sub-light speeds into the Halo stars to make a new start in the relatively un-settled Halo Stars.
Although almost all ancient history has been lost, it is clear that Humans prosper and fully colonise both terran worlds: Raakata Primus and Secondus. The Hive structures there are clearly human-made based on common STC designs. It's also apparent that humans had extensively explored and colonise the remainder of the system to varying degrees.
The details of how and exactly when the Slavers invaded the Raakata system have been lost to time.
A great fleet from the Imperium arrives, led by the mighty Lord Imperator Imaru, the warriors from the Imperium free the Raakata system from the alien slavemasters and set about establishing the rule of the Imperium of Man...
Contemporary scribum record that the Imperator was sent by the Emperor of all Mankind, aboard his flagship the Pyre Of Argo, to release the people of the Raakata system from the alien Slavers.
The Exiled Lord Imaru Baraqu chose to start by cleansing the largest and most ancient hive-city on the planet of Raakata Primus, which was at the time controlled by the brutal xenos Slavers. The Exiled Legion prosecuted a long and bloody campaign. The vile aliens wasted no opportunity to use forbidden xenos weapons and profane tactics to remain in power. Despite this, none could stand against the might of the Exiles, and soon the liberated human slaves of the hive city were swearing eternal fealty to the Emperor of Mankind.
With the Slavers defeated in the Raakata system the glorious Imaru led a crusade through the Erebus Gate. Imaru’s fleet turned the tables on the Slavers and the myriad xenos races found through the Gate. Imperium Minoris' warriors purged the Slavers and forced the remaining aliens to bow to the superior rule of mankind. To save themselves from immolation most begged to serve the Imperium in the name of the Emperor of Mankind. The benevolent Imaru allowed those who were not directly involved in the oppression of humanity to self-govern as serf worlds, providing that the tithes flowed back to the Raakata system to aid in the proper restoration of humanity.
This is the start of many centuries of work to rebuild the Raakata system into the Imperium Minoris. The resources flooding in through the Gate allowed development of the Raakata system as its own resources were all but completely gone, used up by the hateful Slavers. Many non-human serfs were imported through the gate to aid in the Great Restoration, and mankind spread through the gate into the worlds prepared for colonisation by the alien vassals. Humanity rose to a new pinnacle of civilization in the name of the Emperor of Mankind and reconnected in small ways with the distant Imperium Majoris, bringing an influx of new ideas and peoples to the Raakata system.
Influential and powerful individuals of Raakata are officially recognised, establishing titles and domains and creating the Raakatan Noble Dynasties. The Rule of the Imperium Minoris shifts to the Caliphate Council of Great Houses (often called the Caliphate Houses).
Toros Umboldt (A Rogue Trader exploring the newly opened Koronus Expanse) followed what he described as ‘visions from the God-Emperor’ through the warp storms that surround Raakata. Lord Imaru entertained Toros for many months before dispatching this Rogue Trader back to the Imperium Majoris with requests for all manner of goods and personnel.
Toros Umbolt's second fleet arrives at Raakata bringing a vast wealth of knowledge, hundreds-of-thousands of settlers and a wealth of exotic goods unavailable anywhere in the Imperium Minoris. These new settlers also brought with them the Imperial Cult and Missionaries from the Ministorum, although the most militant of these religious preachers did not survive long in the secular landscape of Raakata at that time.
"There can be but one Emperor, one god, one saviour, one deliverer. Without Him, a billion billion souls are nought but fodder for the ever-thirsting evils of the Warp." — Ecclesiarch Theodacus V, Indroit to the Verses of DuskThe Adeptus Ministorum, the official state church of the Imperium of Man which maintains and promotes the worship of the Emperor of Mankind as the one, true God of Humanity, constructs the first Cathedral on Raakata Primus, officially bringing the Ecclesiarchy to the Imperium Minoris.
Ageing Toros Umboldt returns one final time to the Raakata system, bringing with him a gigantic fleet of settlers, material and supplies. After delivering his cargo, Toros retires to the Imperium Minoris.
The vile Ork invaded the Raakata system from a vast wandering planetoid that appeared on the edge of the system...
The Warp Storms that surround the Raakata System begin to surge. This has little effect on the vast majority of citizens in the Raakata System, but observers take note of this unusual activity.
Without warning a mysterious asteroid-starship appeared on the very far edge of the Raakata system, carried there by the boiling tides of witchspace that have forever surrounded Raakata. Thousands of Ork ships thundered across the Raakata system too rapidly and in too large a number for even the might of the Imperial fleets to counter. Ork ships slammed into stations, planets and outposts across the whole star system. Apocalyptic battles erupted everywhere. This is spoken of in legend as "The Blood Tide".
To prevent the vile Orks capturing the Erebus Gate and spreading to Ivoran and from there into the colonies of the Imperium Minoris the honoured Commander Sepatais of the Legion destroyed the gate on the Raakata side, sealing those worlds off forever.
At the start of the Greenskin War the Aegean Hypercomplex - a massive and vital industrial sector, home to billions of citizens and the primary manufacting and resource gathering operation on the edge of the system - was on the opposite side of the system from the Ork invasion point, and as such were a vital fallback and resupply location. However, as the war progressed, orbital mechanics brought the Aegeans closer to the Ork asteroid base. Somewhere around the year 800.M41 the Orks used a superweapon that tore open space, destroying the hypercomplex, killing billions of people and shattering the supply of material for the war.
The final battle took place in orbit of Raakata Primus. An Ork warship far larger than anything seen before began bombarding the planet from orbit, a desperate act to destroy the heart of the Imperium. The weapons of the much-depleted Imperial Navy were ineffective against such a monstrously huge vessel, forcing Imaru and much of his surviving Legion to board the vile ship. Explosions from inside tore apart the engines. The massive Ork vessel began to wildly drift out of control . The huge craft plunged into the atmosphere of Raakata Primus. The crash sent megatons of dust up into the atmosphere and sadly destroyed the hive-city of Thaelia, but this final act broke the back of the Ork War.
After the Greenskin Wars, both sides were almost entirely defeated. From the wreckage and ashes of the war civilisation re-emerged...
Around a dozen noble houses survived the destruction of the Aegean Hypercomplex, along with several hundreds of thousands survivors from all branches of military and civilian sectors (from a population in the billions). For 60 years after the destruction of the Ageans, Imperial survivors battled Ork survivors. The Minos, Crassius, Macharius, Westguard, and Ithacaran noble families based from the Kalrek Voidstation were able to help hold things together with strong leadership. With no links to the rest of the system, it was unknown whether the greater war was still going on. survivors lost sight of the large picture and simply battled for survival day-by-day. Both sides picked through the chaotic ruins of the vast space-industrial sector as it settled into stable gravitation pockets on the edge of the Warp Rift that became known as the Scylla Reef.
Mining asteroid KJ-383na/201 made safe for habitation and renamed Tantalus Voidstation. The Ithacaran, Minoan, Macharius and Westguard Nobles moved from the Kalrek to Tantalus to develop it. Tantalus Begins to accept refugees and immigrants from anywhere in the sector. The bulk of the surviving ships and personnel from the end of the war converge on Tantalus.
In 4892 the Ithacaran and Minoan Nobles declared independence from the Sleastatt Alliance and claimed ownership of Tantalus. Assassins killed all members of House Macharius and Westguard in what many call “the Night of Blood” - presumably because these Houses refused to join the rebellion. House Minos moved to claim the recently rediscovered voidstation of Pandareus around the Lava planet Hades and took over the mining of that world. House Ithacaran abolished the Noble Dynastic hold on government, devolving control of the Adeptus Administratum to elected representatives of the people. This became the Ithacan Star League, governed by the Assembly Council, all traces of Imperial heritage were erased and suppressed.
The Ithacan Star League uses the last two surviving Lance-class system ships to quell ‘pirate attacks’, thereby solidifying dominance and establishing the laws of Tantalus.
Restoration of Primus defences and consolidation of the remains of the Imperial Fleet in the Core Worlds - the defensive cordon is known as the 'Bastion Reach', it extends to approximately the orbit of the asteroid-field that was Raakata Secundus.
Small expeditionary fleets dispatched from the Bastion Reach to patrol the system putting down Orks wherever they are found, beginning in 934.M41
Asterius Minos, the young heir to the Minos Dynasty travelled to Tantalus to attempt an ill-conceived coup against the Assembly Council. He failed and was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison. He was disowned and disinherited by the Minos Dynasty.
Jasper Barkle is recruited by a N.E.R.V. mentor to take on covert projects to protect the Star League.
Battle Group Aetheon containing Astartes and Militarum (includes Azael Marralis) is attacked by Ork Raiders while patrolling the Charybdis Graveyard, all ships are lost.
Jasper Barkle rises rapidly to become CEO of Paradise Holding Corporation.
The National Emergency Reserve Venture corporation recruits 500 workers from outcasts of society to join a new classified project. Asterius Minos is selected as the project leader.
Living in Sector F31-Z of the area known as the Ancient Labyrinth, Governor Asterius Minos leads his people in the renovation and rebuilding of the ancient machinery. They also construct a kilometres-long monorail tunnel that links N.E.R.V. HQ to Sector F31-Z and Sector 0-0. The population of F31-Z grows from 500 to over 4,000. Life is good, people are well paid and have good jobs working for N.E.R.V.
Small Follow-Up mission dispatched to find out what happened to Battle Group Aetheon. Investigation stalled as the expeditionary fleet is rebuffed by the Ithacan Star League. Without the firepower to enforce support, the investigation fleet patrols a part of the Graveyard for a few weeks before returning to the Core Worlds.
While inspecting a work-site Asterius Minos is crushed by a rockfall. His spine and body are crushed and he is paralysed from the neck down - but the injury frees him from the alien symbiote that no-one knew was controlling him. He reveals to Greth Van Noor the presence of a malevolent alien within Tantalus.
After Asterius awakes from a healing coma he travels to an ancient shrine and sees God, who gives him a mission. Prevent the Beast from reaching Sanctuary. Asterius returns to his people and reveals that they have all been tricked by the alien Beast and they must now work against the plans of the Beast to prevent a terrible fate for all of Tantalus.
Asterius leads his people deeper into Sector F31-Z to a smaller and more defensible location near the shrine where he saw God. He calls the area Nemea and reforges his people into the Guardians of Nemea - holy warriors tasked with guarding Sanctuary and defeating the Beast.
N.E.R.V. "Security Contractors" attempt an overwhelming assault against the Guardians of Nemea. They attack along the Monorail line and in smaller groups on foot through the entire Sector. The Guardians have been expecting this for months and are very well dug-in. The initial N.E.R.V. assault fails. For 18 months N.E.R.V. attacks the Guardians before finally relenting. Although the guardians prevent N.E.R.V. from re-taking the path to Sanctuary, they are hugely reduced in number. The survivors though are now hardened veterans.
After fighting off the N.E.R.V. assaults, the remaining Guardians realised that they were alone. The Beast had convinced the rest of Tantalus that it didn't exist while simultaniously it manipulated them into doing its bidding. To counter this, and build support for resupply, the Guardians produced and sold the drug Mithril. This made them wealthy, and they used that wealth to fund rebellion in the Districts to weaken the hold of the Beast. Eventually the Guardians became the hidden power behind one of the largest Cartels in Tantalus, and even reached out to Stormport in the Graveyard. They recruited support for anti-corporate terrorist actions aimed at weakening the hold of the Beast, while simultaniously seeking ways to reinforce the Guardians still holding Nemea. This over-reach was exploited by the Beast, who infiltrated the Guardians extended operations and toppled them. The massive 'criminal' organisation the Guardians had built to fund revolution fell rapidly and splintered into dozens of ignorant gangs. The Guardians withdrew once more to Nemea. The Beast had won the cold war.
Niobe Station, the vast voidstation at Amphion Crossing is destroyed by a huge Ork fleet. Essentially sealing off the Ithacan Star League from the rest of Raakata. This is a massive blow to the Ithacan Star League.
The Destruction of Niobe Station is a shock to everyone in the Star League. The Council orders the Navy to recall all patrols and to consolidate the fleet in preparation for defending Tantalus from the Ork warfleet. Massive efforts to double manufacturing of war materials begins. Withdrawal of Navy Patrols from the Charybdis Graveyard provide opportunities for non-Ithacan governments to flourish, but the edge of the Graveyard is heavily patrolled by the Navy, essentially containing any 'rebellious' elements to the dangerous Graveyard without any support from Tantalus.
The heavily damaged Star Charter emerges from the warp storm that surrounds Raakata near Tantalus station. The ship is gravely damaged and the command staff are forced to seek aid from the nearest settlement.
The modified scout-ship Sterope is discovered user attack by a small Ork raider. The Logs of the Sterope show a sizeable Ork fleet moving along the Sleeper Route, opposite to Amphion Crossing. Estimated time of arrival at Tantalus: 112 Days from the last scan.
The Privateer ship Lost Star returns to Tantalus with the Sterope in tow. The crew hands over the Sterope scouting data to Athena Graves. The scouting report is then broadcast via Tantalus Datanet and seen by 64% of the citizenry within 2 hours.
The Guardians had been long planning a final strike against N.E.R.V. and the Beast. They sent a highly-skilled strike team into N.E.R.V. HQ to steal a copy of the entire database. The Guardians hoped this would reveal the plans of the Beast, allowing the Guardians to counter them. This was timed to be a last-minute action so the Beast wouldn't have time to alter its plans. The Strike succeeded, the plans were passed to the Blackhorn, the remaining loyal fragment of the Guardian's revolution in the Districts. By this point it was little more than a drug-selling street gang, but one old-guard Guardian remained there to oversee the operation in secret. The datacrystal was lost when N.E.R.V. assault teams raided the Blackhorn headquarters, denying the Guardians any insight into the Beast's final plans.
