History

Stargaze valley

Stargaze valley, named after it's clear skies that provide a beautifull blue sky during the day and an ocean of stars at night. The oval shaped valley lies between the western mountains that shield it from clouds. Before the age of magic, and the counting of time, it was already known for it's tranquillity and beauty. Travelers from far away land came to see the majestic valley. It was no wonder that Aethos chose this piece of land to introduce earth to the Vesaja. The ground got infused with magic from the vesajan landing, which caused it to become even more unique and beautifull. The trees and plants grew bigger and stranger, and magical creatures now inhabited the valley alongside the native wildlife. The valley acted as some sort of advertisement for the Vesaja; how great they were, and how much they would improve life on earth. For this reason they showed only the good, and not the bad, making the valley look like paradise. Kart-aal's observatory was later built there, as Kart-aal required the clear skies for his exploration. A small village was also built for the construction of the great tower. Aside from this, for more than half a millennia this magical place would be left untouched.

Death of Kart-aal

All good things must come to an end, and for the valley this would be the year 524. Arnethius , general of Ark-aal was sent by his master to destroy the observatory. Kart-aal would not have it so, and fought the ascended fire mage. The battle was fierce and scarred the beautifull valley which was set ablaze with magical fire. At the end the vesajan god was defeaten, and as he died the magic he wielded sank into the ground, corrupting the valley. All that was not death from the initial fight, would be warped into something not recognizable anymore. The peacefull grasslands, blue streams and majestic trees made place for a traitorous swamp. All the harmless animals and magical creatures disappeared, as dangerous predators started to roam these lands. The skies would never be clear again, as a thick fog drew over the lands, blocking the light from reaching the ground. It was the death of stargaze valley, and the birth of Roth.
Stargaze valley, oh lord what a sight
Crystal clear skies with stars so bright
Paradise on earth, one could not believe
So much beauty, eyes could barely perceive
But the treacherous dog, Arnethius his name
murdered a Vesaja, he should live in shame
The magic corrupted, right there on the spot
The valley once fair, now decay and...

A dangerous endeavour

Roth was now feared as it's reputation spread all over the western continent. It was avoided at all costs by everybody, until people found out that it was also a place full of unique and magical organisms. These plants and animals had alot of practical use, making them worth a substancial amount. Collectors would risk their lives searching the swamp borders for fortune. In 846 A.V., a failed attempt was done by Amthal to clear Roth of the dangerous critters within. All was not bad though, as they were able to restore and repopulate the small abandonned village that was once built for the creation of the obervatory. For now Rothaven was only accessible from the south and while living between those walls was relatively safe, getting there was still very dangerous.

Taming the untamable

In the year 1066, when the War of the West broke out, the eyes of the west once again turned to Roth. Liox closed their borders on land and in sea, making it impossible to travel from Arkalon to the southern cities, or the other way around. Much to the credit of those living permanently in Rothaven, a path further north was found all the way to Pineslope . The shortest and safest route was now established and they also found out that the fog was affected by the moons and as a result would grow thinner certain times of the month which makes it safer. This would now be the only route out of Liox's reach, but sadly only possible by foot as horses could not cross the rocky, steep paths that accessed it. As dangerous as that was people would risk the crossing, by their own will or forced. Communication and trade between the southern cities and Arkalon was essential during the war, so often times caravans were sent through. This is where the southern entry to Roth got the name "path of the damned" from, as those who were forced to walk it faced an uncertain faith.

Current day

As the war of the west rages on, Roth remains the only route between north and south. Every month there are dozens of caravans making the crossing. But the connection is not the main reason why people risk the dangers of Roth. Since people now live in Rothaven, they need to be provided with items from the outside world. Items, often cheap, that would be bought with items unique to Roth, expensive in the outside world. A new kind of merchant, called a Gambler  , would often make the crossing from north or south to Rothaven for massive profit margins. But as the name suggests they would in fact be gambling their life for these riches. Due to the dangerous creatures dwelling within, the access points to Roth are heavily fortified and protected. The western mountains that shield the Westlands from Roth remain a dangerous place, as some monsters attempt to escape through there. Attacks outside of Roth are happening more frequently every year.
