Lycan

The last project of Ylkr-aal

History

Creation

Right before the banning of the Vesaja in the year 550, Ylkr-aal the scientist had finally finished his greatest work yet. Not much is known about this creature because alot of the documentation was lost or unfinished. What was known however, is that the base was a crossover between a human and a wolf, but with addition of alot more unknown elements. Physically they look like a huge muscular wolf, and don't resemble a human in the slightest anymore. The lycan turned out to have everything Ylkr-aal desired: intelligence, obedience, strenght, speed and agression. He knew this new species certainly had the potential to win the god-wars, but he never had the chance to deploy them. Aethos banned the Vesaja, including the scientist, leaving the lycans without a master, unchecked.

A living nightmare

It didn't take long for the few lycans in existence to escape from their enclosure in the lab, hidden deep inside of Roth . Being able to reproduce their numbers slowly grew, as they hunted the swamp and devoured everything that crossed their path. Humans also were on the menu, which quickly made the lycans the most feared creature in Roth. Tales about encounters travelled fast, as they were rare since most didn't survive to tell the tale. Lycan attacks are becoming more frequent every year, as more of them are escaping the valley into the realm of men.

Behaviour

While their numbers have grown, lycans are still rare creatures. Most what is known about their behaviour comes from survivors, often merchants, who got attacked on the path through Roth.
"It jumped from the mist, attacking the donkey right behind me. By the time I loaded my crossbow, everybody behind me was dead. I turned and ran, but suddenly I was launched forwards as it clawed my back. Unable to move I turned my head.... It just stood there, staring at me from the fog as everything turned black. Out of 16 armed men it killed 11 in one minute... one minute..."
~Borus, a merchant recovering from the attack in Rothaven
It is not known why lycans always kill more people at once when they get the chance. It could be to secure food for a longer period of time, or because they see humans as a threath. These are just theories, as it could also be just out of fun or something else.
"My caravan got attacked at the end of the forsaken path, I was unscathed, but my friend Kalston was injured and many others lost their lives. We returned to Durner town, abandoning the idea of ever going to the north. A few weeks later Karlston went to check his traps in the forest, when I suddenly heard him screaming for help... I was too late, there was no trace of him. People don't believe me but I know for sure it was the Lycan. Nothing else would make my friend sound so terrified..."
~Oswalt, hunter
Another detail that often reoccurs is the act of wounding, but not killing a target. Many believe the lycan does this for when he is hungry again. The creature would then return to the place of the initial attack, pick up the scent of blood and track the wounded target wherever it might be. The unrelenting drive to kill a specific target might be something that Ylkr-aal implemented on purpose, as it would have been a powerfull tool to use in the war.
