Arnethius

Man turned god

Early life

Not much is known about Arnethius before his time as a soldier. He was born in the year 497 in a small Amthali village. Life wasn't easy during this period; most resources went into the god-wars and soldiers of Arkun were constantly on the look-out for youngsters to enlist in their army. There was no choice once chosen, the child would be taken and the parents would be given one gold piece of their trouble. Arnethius was a mage, and therefore the minimal emrollment age of 14 did not apply to him. He was only 7 years old when was taken to Arkalon for military training.

More details of Arnethius's life before the military, can be seen in the article below.

...and so came the fifth involuntary enrollment of fresh soldiers for the never ending war effort in the east. Those capable of magic were, naturally, most desired as they had a far greater effect on the battlefield.   Two times the couple had managed to evade the arkalonian scouts, but there wouldn't be a third. You see, the mother had once been spotted by a spy while going to the market, which they knew meant that they were in fact on the list. It would only be a matter of time before they got caught.   Their son however, barely two years old, was not. To spare him from spending his youth in the military, they trusted him to the mothers sister before turning themselves in. They would never see each other again.   Although only being 15 years old, the sister did a great job keeping the boy safe for the years to come, raising him like one of her own. The boy was healthy, smart, and was said to have had a good heart.   However, also being a mage, the boy had trouble hiding his abilities, and at this time, the enrollments had made the Amthali people very weary of each other, and so the aunt had to keep the boy away from anybody she did not know or trust. As a result, this isolation made him a bit socially awkward towards other other children.   One particular day, the boy was playing by the creek, and got spotted by a group of other children. The children knew him, and due to his awkwardness saw an easy target to pick on. Insults and laughter was what followed. The boy tried to run, but the others wouldn't let him. Fear turned into sorrow, sorrow turned into anger, and anger led to retalliation.   In one quick sway of his right arm, they boy threw a ball of fire towards one of the bullies, grazing the side of his neck. Where normal fire would have caused minor burns, the flame sticked to the bullies neck, burning bright white and growing bigger as if feeding on the flesh. While the young mage ran away, the group of bullies tried to douse the fire with the water of the creek. Nothing seemed to work, and the victim died a few moments later. At 7 years old, the boy had commited his first murder. Nobody back then would have known this accident would lead to the murder of tens of thousands more.   With the village now turning on her and her nephew, the aunt now had nowhere to go. Even if she managed to flee with him, she now realized the boy was dangerous and needed guidance with his potent magic. Not after long, the soldiers came, and she had no other choice than to turn the boy in.   Abandonned by his parents, and betrayed by his aunt, the boy which was already socially challenged now had nobody to trust anymore. Him turning into the monster that he did become, was predictable, if not logical.

Unique mutation

The young boy turned out to be not just an ordinary fire mage. He had a unique mutation which caused his fire to be extremely magical, and capable of burning material that shouldn't be flamable like water and stone. After some training he was fully in control of the fire and able to direct it wherever he wanted. The bright white flame he created couldn't be extinguished by anybody but him. Not even with magic. When Arkun found out about his talents, he kept the boy close to him and made sure he underwent the most exquisite training. With some luck, this boy could become the key to conquer the east.

Ascension

Arnethius, wielder of the true flame, grew to be the weapon Arkun had hoped. Men, ships, castles... Everything that opposed Arnethius was burned to the ground. But despite his power, it could all be ended by a single arrow or swing of a sword. Arkun had a chance here; a chance to to win the war and be the god of gods, the ruler of the whole planet. He didn't want to risk his greatest pawn, and decided to gift Arnethius a fraction of his power, to ascend him so that the mage would become even stronger and far more resilient to potential damage. In the year 522 at the age of 25, Arnethius accepted this gift. He would be reborn as an Ascendant , which in combination with the powers he already possessed practically made him a god.

Death of Kartan, the navigator

Two years later Arnethius was on the brink of defeating the last enemy forces of the east when he got recalled by his god-lord Arkun. Kartan had returned, and had threatened to inform the celestial Aethos about the situation on Tera. Uncertain of how the celestial woul react, Arkun took no chances and ordered his general to destroy the observatory so that the navigator could not get the message through. Kartan would not let his most proudly work be destroyed, and payed with his life trying to protect it. The world, including Arkun, was in utter shock when they learned that a mere human was able to kill a Vesajan.

Betrayal

Over the years Arnethius had already gathered a sizable following both in the military as among the western commoners, but now that he had slain a vasajan, his following grew even more. Arkun felt that his general had grown too big, and feared that he could one day turn against him. While Arkun was still a lot stronger than the ascended mage, he didn't dare taking care of it himself as that would break the rule set by Aethos to not use magic against the native species on Tera. Therefore he gathered the most capable assasins and mages in his vast army, and ordered them to kill Arnethius. Those that succeeded would receive a part of Arkun's magic and become ascended themselves. Nobody came back to receive the reward.

Rebellion

There were many attempts on the general's life during the months after the fight against Kartan. Arnethius was not stupid, and knew there was only one in the continent that could turn so many powerfull mages against him : Arkun. For a long time he layed low in the Amthali grasslands, and thought of a plan to get back at Arkun. Word spread fast, and in time Arnethuis had created an army of his own. For 16 years he would be fighting his former lord for the dominion of west-Theria.

Death

Arkun and Ykryn  knew that they couldn't keep avoiding a direct fight with Arnethius, and prepared for a last stance. Ykryn had been breeding a new species; a combination of a wolf and a dragon. These two Drakehound's  were extremely resistant to fire and bred for one purpose: killing Arnethius. The sun was setting behind the mountains on a hot summers evening when the hounds attacked the general in his camp at the foot of the western mountains. Arnethius barely survived, having killed one hound and wounding the other, but was gravely injured himself. Arkun was furious that Ykryn's plan had failed, and could no longer just stand by and watch. Right now Arnethius was vulnurable, and the vesajan god-lord of the west decided that the time was now. That evening, after darkness had fallen over the land, the otherworldly spells cast by the vesajan mage shined brightly in the sky before exploding, killing every living soul in camp. Arnethius, now laying broken in a field of corpses, knew this was the end. "There can only be one, and that one will be vesajan" Arkun said before dealing the final blow. It was the year 540 when Arnethius died, with his rebellion with it.

Weapons and armor

On the battlefield Arnethius was always very easy to spot, as his armor had a white-golden shine to it. This ornamented ensemble was given to him by Arkun and consisted of 2 javelins, a spear-staff, tassets, platebody, greaves and helmet. The maker of this incredible set of armor was unknown, but many believed it was made by Bolkion prior to the godwars. When Arkun defeated his former general, he took back the armor and displayed it in his throne room in Arkalon to showcase his supremacy. The set would trade owners again when the prima rekna, led by the vesajan warrior Rekna , succesfully took the city of Arkalon and forced Arkun to surrender. Rekna took the set, which is considered the most expensive armor on the planet, as a payback for the crimes Arkun had done against the firigans. Most of the set can still be found in a museum in Reki . The alloy used to create the set was a mixture of sirrium and another alien metal from Vesa, so nobody has been able to fix the damaged parts for now. Over time some smaller parts started showing up again all over the continents, where most of it is also showcased as a relic.

Liox

After the fall of Arnethius, Arkun ordered the prosecution of anyone who had stood by the traitor. Thousands and thousands of arnethians had to flee from their homes in Amthal and Durval to escape execution. Most of them fled north into the rocky no-man's land that layed between them and Arkalon . During the rebellion a lot of military camps were built here for the soldiers to rest on their way towards- and back from Arkalon. The biggest one was camp Liox, which became the last safe-haven for the arnethius due to the superior location on top of a hill. The prosecution ended when the vesaja got banned by Aethos , and slowly the military camp would grow to become the grand city of liox. They claimed the rocky no-mans land for themselves, which would from now on be part of the lioxian empire. Here arnethism has remained the most dominant religion ever since, and despite his death many still believe that Arnethius was the one true god.
