Zalhara

Zalhara is a continent of raw magic, diverse landscapes, and contrasting cultures, where the land itself dictates the survival and nature of its inhabitants. Kingdoms rise where the environment allows, but much of Zalhara remains unclaimed wilderness, teeming with creatures and forces untouched by mortal hands.

Regions and Kingdoms

Eithwyn (Northwest Forest Kingdoms)
Dominating Zalhara’s northwestern expanse, Eithwyn is cloaked in vast, ancient forests. These woodlands are home to powerful elvish kingdoms whose people are deeply attuned to the land’s magic. Towering trees, hidden citadels, and leyline-rich groves define this region, making it a sanctuary for ancient knowledge and druidic practices.   Culture: Elves here are guardians of natural magic, isolationist yet feared for their mastery of the wild.
Geography: Dense forests, crystal lakes, and leyline hotspots.
Fenmoor (Northeastern Wetlands)
Fenmoor lies in the northeast, a land of swamps, misty plains, and waterlogged forests. Constant rainfall and flooding shape its marshy terrain. Settlements cling to elevated ground, and many cultures here rely on reed craft, fishing, and the gathering of rare swamp herbs.   Culture: Tribal societies and alchemists who harvest powerful resources from the bogs.
Geography: Fog-choked wetlands, sprawling marshes, and slow-flowing rivers.
Opos Tyr (Central Plains and Riverlands)
Located in Zalhara’s central corridor, Opos Tyr occupies fertile valleys and rolling plains west of the volcanic ridges. Rivers run through this region, creating a prosperous agricultural heartland where cities rise amidst a network of farmlands.   Culture: A kingdom of disciplined warriors and artisans, with a culture that blends martial strength with artistic refinement.
Geography: Fertile river valleys, misty highlands, and scattered forests.
Kharadorn (Volcanic Highlands and Desert Frontier)
The central volcanic mountains and the eastern arid regions are ruled by Kharadorn, a kingdom forged in fire and stone. Its people have adapted to the harsh volcanic ridges and the desert plains beyond, drawing strength from their environment. Magic here often manifests as fire and earth, with traditions that revere elemental spirits.   Culture: Fierce, honor-driven society that thrives in adversity, known for their volcanic forges and desert mystics.
Geography: Volcanic ridges, ash-covered slopes, red-rock deserts, and arid plains.
Valoria (Southern Arcane Empire)
Valoria commands the southwestern coast and extends its influence inland. Unlike the wild cultures around it, Valoria is a mageocratic kingdom ruled by The Arcane Conclave, blending rigid hierarchy with arcane dominance. Its cities are marvels of magical engineering, and its armies wield destructive spellcraft unmatched on the continent.   Culture: Magocracy enforcing strict social order; heavy use of slavery and magical control.
Geography: Fertile southern lowlands transitioning into snowy forests toward the Frostmarch.
Kalros (Southern Tundra and Coast)
South of Valoria lies Kalros, a kingdom shaped by cold winds, snowy forests, and icy tundra. Its people are hardy, valuing resilience and unity. The Frostmarch coastlines are treacherous but rich with marine life, while the interior forests shelter hardy clans and legendary beasts.   Culture: Clan-based, with a strong warrior tradition and reverence for spirits of winter.
Geography: Coniferous forests, tundra, icy bays, and snow-laden highlands.
The Highland Isles (Eastern Archipelago)
Off Zalhara’s eastern coast lies a chain of rugged, mist-covered islands, home to highland clans fiercely protective of their independence. The islands’ rocky shores and stormy seas have shaped them into seafarers and raiders, while druids and shamans guide their spiritual life.   Culture: Clan loyalty, druidic magic, and a close bond with the sea.
Geography: Highland cliffs, rolling moors, misted mountains.

Geography

Zalhara’s geography is a vivid tapestry shaped by raw elemental forces and the wild flow of leyline magic. Its landforms create natural borders for kingdoms and host an array of climates ranging from lush to extreme. Each feature influences the cultures, conflicts, and survival strategies of its inhabitants.

The Verdant Northwest

The northwest of Zalhara is dominated by dense, ancient forests that stretch for hundreds of miles. The canopy forms a near-continuous green ocean, pierced only by occasional lakes and hidden valleys where mist lingers even at midday. Towering trees, some older than recorded history, are said to hum faintly when leyline surges pass through their roots. The region’s rivers carve through rocky gorges, feeding the wetlands farther east.

The Mirelands of the Northeast

Transitioning from forest into swamplands and wet plains, the northeast is a world of constant moisture. Vast bogs and marshes dominate the landscape, fed by rain and slow-moving rivers that snake into the Mesowet Ocean. Fog blankets the area year-round, and the land is prone to sudden floods. Despite its treacherous footing, the Mirelands are rich in medicinal plants and rare alchemical resources, drawing traders and adventurers willing to risk its dangers.

The Ashspire Mountains

Running through the continent’s center, the Ashspire Range is a spine of volcanic peaks and jagged ridges. Their slopes are scarred by ancient lava flows and studded with vents that still release smoke and heat. Earthquakes and eruptions occasionally reshape the terrain, creating new rivers of ash that fertilize the surrounding land. Many caves here glow faintly from crystals charged with arcane energy, attracting elemental creatures and daring miners alike.

The Eastern Arid Basin

Beyond the Ashspires, the land opens into dry plains and sun-scorched deserts. The terrain is a mixture of rolling dunes, cracked earth, and rocky plateaus. Oases and rivers fed by mountain runoff provide lifelines for settlements and caravans. Winds sculpt the sand into shifting formations, and mirages blur the line between reality and illusion. This region’s heat and openness give it a harsh beauty, matched by the resilience of those who call it home.

The Western Heartlands

The lands west of the Ashspire range are more temperate and fertile, with sprawling valleys and mist-shrouded mountains. These heartlands feature terraced hills, broad plains, and forests that climb the mountainsides in layers. Rivers weave through the landscape, sustaining both agriculture and trade. This balance of terrain makes the west one of Zalhara’s most habitable regions, yet leyline activity keeps it unpredictable, with sudden storms or magical anomalies occurring without warning.

The Eastern Highlands (Island Chain)

The eastern isles rise steeply from the sea, their cliffs battered by relentless storms. Mist hangs thick over the highlands, which are blanketed in grasslands and rocky ridges. Valleys cut into the islands form fertile pockets, while the mountains offer shelter for hidden communities. The seas surrounding the islands are treacherous, filled with jagged rocks and unpredictable currents, fostering strong maritime traditions among their inhabitants.

The Southern Frostmarch

The southern arc of Zalhara transitions from lowlands into snow-dusted forests, tundra, and finally glacial expanses. This region is defined by biting winds, frozen rivers, and vast stretches of ice where the land meets the frozen sea. Ancient glaciers carve deep fjords into the coast, and legends speak of spirits that dwell in the blizzards. Despite its severity, the Frostmarch sustains resilient wildlife and the hardy clans who have adapted to survive there.
