Material Plane

The Material Plane is the primary realm of existence in Tanaria’s cosmology, where the mortal world unfolds and the balance of natural and magical forces is maintained. It is a plane of both stability and change, shaped by the hands of gods, the will of mortals, and the ebb and flow of leyline energy that threads through its core. Unlike other planes, which embody extremes—such as the pure chaos of the Elemental Realms or the divine order of Celestia—the Material Plane is a delicate convergence of all elements, making it both vibrant and vulnerable.   The Material Plane is vast, encompassing continents, oceans, and skies under the celestial dance of Callista and Umbriel, the two moons. It is where life thrives in countless forms, from the smallest insect to titanic creatures of legend. The plane is tethered to both the divine and the arcane, with gods influencing its destiny and leylines channeling raw magic through its bones. This connection makes it a focal point in the struggle between creation and destruction.   While it appears boundless to mortals, the Material Plane is hemmed in by unseen veils separating it from other planes. These veils are thin in certain locations—ancient ruins, leyline nexuses, and areas scarred by divine or infernal events—allowing planar breaches where otherworldly beings may enter. Scholars debate whether the plane floats in a cosmic void or rests upon the great roots of Ygdranith, the world tree whispered of in ancient myths.   In the grand order, the Material Plane serves as the meeting ground of all forces. Gods plant seeds of influence through chosen champions, while devils and demons plot their schemes in shadow. Elemental forces flow in from their native realms, shaping storms, volcanoes, and earthquakes. It is the heart of mortal stories and the central stage upon which fate, divine will, and mortal ambition collide.   The Material Plane is the only known plane where mortal souls are born, live, and die. While they may travel to other realms through magic or divine intervention, their essence is tied to this plane. It is also the plane most cherished by the Prime Deities, who shaped it as both a sanctuary and a proving ground for all life.

Geography

The geography of the Material Plane is as varied and dynamic as the forces that shaped it. Formed during the early Calamity Era, when divine battles reshaped land and sea, it bears the scars of ancient magic and the beauty of natural evolution. Towering mountain ranges, sprawling plains, volcanic islands, and fathomless oceans create a world of endless diversity where every region tells a story of its creation.   The central landmass of Arandor dominates the northern hemisphere, divided by the imposing Zandari Mountains into the fertile west and the harsh deserts of Dhuma to the east. To the south lies Zalhara, an untamed continent of wild forests and treacherous peaks, while the island kingdom of Valoria stands as its beacon of progress. Drakoria sprawls with ancient mountains and valleys imbued with the magic of dragons, its very geography shaped by their influence. Across the vast Mesowet Ocean lies Vandalar, a continent where the marks of the gods are most evident—its landscape a living testament to divine intervention.   The Material Plane is also home to countless islands, archipelagos, and hidden realms. Places like Arlathra, the cradle of the dogfolk, or Makaroa, where a petrified Dragon’s skeleton forms the foundation of Ulanakea, demonstrate how geography and legend intertwine.

Oceans and Waterways

Four major oceans—Mesowet, Orendar, Frostmere, and Thessenar—connect the continents, their currents driving trade and exploration while harboring secrets of the deep. Vast river systems, like the Vel Turun, carve life through the heartlands of Kamulos, and lakes formed by ancient glacial movement dot the landscapes.

Planar Influence on Geography

The Material Plane’s geography is not purely natural. Leylines running beneath its surface influence climate, fertility, and even topography. In some regions, magic warps the environment: forests that shift overnight, mountains that hum with arcane energy, and deserts that bloom during celestial events. Ancient calamities, divine tears, and planar rifts have left anomalies where reality itself bends, creating floating islands, crystalized caverns, and storm-wracked seas.
