Painted Mtn. Safehouse 07

Safehouse 07 is an underground facility of moderate size.. The facility is abandoned and has exhibited significant decay. Hazards in the form of toxic mold, collapsed hallways, and exposed wires make maneuvering the place unaided a dangerous prospect. In addition, the crisscrossed hallways make for a confusing layout for would-be Ark Runners; this has been made worse by the presence of a Horror that has taken up residence here. The sublevels include the factory floor, the meat-culture laboratory, the dormitory, and the cryonics facility.   Although the ruin has previously been in Furyian control, the Furyians abandoned the location due to an active Horror presence.

Purpose / Function

Safehouse 07 was designed to be a meat-cultivation and factory for the purpose of making dog and cat food for the pets and their owners who were going to take shelter here. Lab-grown meat initially grown from cow, chicken, and fish muscular and cartilage tissue was made in the laboratory and then sent to the factory level to be turned into pet food. Additionally, a small hydroponics garden grew small amounts of grain and rice that could be incorporated into the dog food formula, as well as to grow food for any people not in cryostasis while the safehouse was occupied. A small population of survivors was meant to be able to take shelter here along with their pets. The cryonics facility has numerous chambers both in human and animal sizes.

Architecture

With the abandonment of this Ark, a strange black dog-like Horror has taken up residence in the facility. Its mere presence warps existing hallways and passages, turning the facility into a confusing maze. Hallways that led from one chamber a few minutes earlier soon shift to somewhere else completely within the bunker, dead-ends form where a clear path once was, and hallways twist and contort into unnatural and often impassable shapes in the blink of an eye.

Defenses

The safehouse’s interior walls are reinforced steel several inches thick, though there has been a lot of decay and deterioration over the passing centuries since its abandonment. The safehouse was constructed in a manner that is suggestive of military or science lab origins and inspiration. The dormitory and cryonics lab on the lowest level were decorated with personalized touches of the residences there. Old photographs and posters lined the walls of the sleeping quarters, though most are long-since decayed and crumbled away. The facility still has power, strangely enough. The bunker’s LOSTech generator, while functional, is spotty and prone to shorting out before automated systems restart it once more.

History

Even after the world ends, people will still need to feed their pets. This was the idea behind the creation of Painted Mountain Safehouse 07. With advances in lab-grown meat and related tissues, having to slaughter vast amounts of livestock to feed pets had become a thing of the past. With revolutionary technology and a miniaturized pet food factory installed, Safehouse 07 was set up to keep everyone’s pets fed and healthy into the future, when it would be safe to walk aboveground once more. Unfortunately, the facility was attacked by encroaching Horrors before the majority of its prospective metahuman population could take refuge within. Ill-prepared and undermanned, the guards and scientists of the bunker fell prey to the Horrors after all. As the centuries passed, the facility was plundered by raiders and explorers alike, though no one could get past the hermetically sealed doors that led to the bottom floor. Local raiders were chased from the area by a Horror that has taken up residence there. The Horror appears as a horse-sized black dog and is known by the names “Black Hound”, “Old Shuck”, or “The Beast of the Crossroads.” The Horror’s power can alter the terrain and confound would-be Ark Runners.

Tourism

Ark Runners have long been attracted to the idea of exploring this bunker, but Gatewardens have been quick to dissuade inexperienced or ill-prepared runners, saying that the risk of being killed by the Black Hound outweighs the reward of what could be salvaged. Heavy firepower, substantial experience and training, and magical support is recommended before attempting to delve into the depths of the Dog House.
