Timekeeping

The local calendar, the Vecu Calendar (VCT), and the Ruartei Calendar (RCT) are both used in daily life — RCT for interstellar matters and VCT for planetary and in-system matters. (VCT is also used elsewhere in the Caelus system.) The Juridical Calendar is used for all legal matters. As the political center of the Grand Society, other calendars are tracked, but used only when dealing with other star systems.

  • All three calendars — Vecu, Ruartei, and Juridical — have 25-hour days which start at the same time (Vecu's morning) although they have different weeks, months, and years.
  • The Vecu calendar is based on its stellar year, and stays in sync with its revolution around Caelus by adding an extra leap day as needed.
  • The day is 25 Earth hours and the day (as is standard in the Grand Society) divided up into 5 shifts of 5 hours each with the first shift starting in the morning.
  • The year is 586 local days long and divided into 21 months. The first 20 months have 29 days and the last month has 6 days (7 in leap years).
  • Each regular month has 5 weeks with 5 days each and a short week with 4 days. The days of the week are consistent from month to month — the last weekday name is simply skipped over at the end of the month. The last month is treated differently with each day simply being the numbered day.
  • There are 5 seasons, each lasting 117 days — seasons are Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Thaw.
  • As per Caelorian tradition, the Vecu calendar marks its years from the first day of the Spring season following The Great Star Storm.

Notes

Origin of Name (Earth)

Etruscan. Vecu was a sibyl, prophet, or nymph identified as the author of parts of the Etruscan large and complex set of sacred books — laying out the the religiously correct methods of founding cities and shrines, draining fields, formulating laws and ordinances, measuring space and dividing time, initiating the Etruscan people to the arts, originating the rules and rituals of land marking, and presiding over the observance, respect, and preservation of boundaries. Vecu was depicted as lording over the observation of the rules. Thus, she was established as the power presiding over land property and land property rights, laws, and contracts (as distinct from commercial contract laws). Also known as Vegoia, Vecui, and Vecuvia, Vegoe, and sometimes as Begoe or Bigois.
