Caelus (/kejləs/)
Political Center of the Grand Society
Caelus is a central star system — in fact, THE central star system of the Grand Society and the origin point for the Grand Society galactic coordinate system. Together with its sister star system, Tellus, it founded The Caelum which acts as the informal governing authority of the Grand Society.
Highlights
Caelus contains five major population centers (3 planets, 2 gas giant moons), numerous bases, multiple warp paths, a portal communication center, the political center for both the Grand Society and The Caelum, a trade and commerce center, a military center for The Caelum and nearby regions, a manufacturing center, an agriculture center, an entertainment center, two Phaseball teams, and three of the Five Crowns.
Population
Significant Population Centers
Vecu — capital planet of The Caelum, political center of the Grand Society and the old Imperium (The Court), trade and commerce center, cultural center, entertainment center, Phaseball team, Prince of the Five Crowns
Opis — planet, agriculture center, Princess of The Five Crowns
Sethlans — planet, manufacturing center, Prince of The Five Crowns
Bellona — moon, major military deployment and training center, elite military
Portunus — moon, shipping and communication center, nearby portal
Planetary System
Caelus has the rare occurrence of three earth-like planets within its habitable zone.
Scholars speculate that the Ancients modified their orbital paths and possibly terraformed at least two of the planets. (Another highly doubtful theory is that the Ancients actually constructed the planetary system out of the star's protoplanetary disk.)
Main Orbitals
- Girra, a greenhouse planet.
- Opis, the first habitable planet and its moon, Losna.
- Vecu, the second habitable planet and its moon, Manea.
- Sethlans, the third habitable planet and its moon, Bellona, the home of The Caelum's elite military training center.
- Aurae, an asteroid belt.
- Azag, a permafrost planet, conveniently located close to Porta Portal, is mostly barren. Its moon, Portunus, manages the system's shipping and communications, and oversees Porta Station.
- Boreas, a medium gas giant.
- Notus, a mini gas giant.
Scholars believe the large gap between Azag and Boreas was caused by the existence of the portal.
Anomalies
Several anomalies support the theory that some, or most, of the planetary orbits were adjusted. The main anomalies are:
- The existence of three planets within the habitable zone and closer together than typically found.
- Not only does Vecu have the same length of day as the Juridical Calendar, but the hours of the day are identical. Since the Juridical Calendar is based on The Great Star Storm and the Vecu Seasonal Calendar is based on the start of the first season after epochal event, it is highly unlikely these would match so perfectly.
- Portunus' orbital period is exactly three times longer than Manea's — highly unlikely to have occurred naturally.
Notes
Origin of Name (Earth)
Roman. A sky god of the Romans, Caelus was the son of Aether and Dies (Day or Daylight) and considered the Roman counterpart of Uranus and also identified with Jupiter. He was associated with Summanus, the God of nocturnal thunder, and was the father of Janus (mother was Trivia), Saturn, and Ops.Key Facts
