Carakoros Range
Carakoros Range
Pronunciation: care-rack-KORE-os
Map Index: B-5, B-6, C-6
Location: Northern Aorlan
Geography: The mighty Carakoros Mountain Range stretches across nearly the entire northern part of Aorlan, and dominates the landscape with its rugged, snow-covered peaks. The steep forbidding mountains, ranging from 2,400 to 22,000 feet in elevation, create a formidable, nearly impassable barrier, to north-south travel. The Northern Pass, a long arduous trail leading from Arnheim in the south to the Siaga Forest in the north, provides the only known crossing route. Glaciers and lofty snow capped summits exist high above the tree line, while scrubby vegetation clings to steep lower slopes. Rumors say that rich deposits of gold await in streams on the north side of the range. However, an arduous and dangerous journey awaits any prospectors who dare make the trip.
Primary Population: Draorn
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Arn, Ceodari, Garuun, Half-Ghruz, Kharg, Kharz, Valtauri
Climate: The harsh climate of Carakoros, has long brutally cold winters and short cool summers. Deep snow drifts bury the mountains in winter, while the summer sun swells the swift icy streams with snowmelt. Powerful storms accompanied by mighty winds strike with little warning, leading to the deaths of many unprepared travelers.
Wildlife: Only the most cold hearty animals can survive in this harsh environment. Mountain goats ply the steep slopes while the lower grassy slopes support snow hares and white minks.
Humanoids: Few humanoids are known to live in these mountains except for the Draorn. These well adapted humanoids have thick white fur and live in snow caves.
Monsters: On the lower slopes of this range, large packs of wolves, worgs, and winter worgs roam the vegetated lower slopes while fierce barbaric tribes of Frost Giants, dwell in the perpetual icy conditions found near high mountain summits. The only other settlements within this range belong to the Kharz dwarves of Rhorr who live underground in a southern spur in the eastern mountians.
History: These mountains experienced a great melting when the climate warmed in the years following the Great Cataclym. Formerly mostly snow capped, today only the highest mountains still have year-round snow.
Today: The Carakoros Range offers much promise for gold miners yet the dangers may outway the potential riches.
