San Ratina
Government
The Assembled Masters comprise the deans, headmasters, and master tradesfolk that call San Ratina their home. Itinerant traders and guest lecturers are not part of the Assembled, but they do occupy a position of privilege while visiting the city.
Defences
San Ratina is surrounded by a thick curtain wall with towers against the riverbank. The towers can be lowered to block surface passage from both ends of the River.
Internally, the Guardmaster maintains a small force investigators, arrestors, and crisis workers that manage criminal and other destructive activity in the city.
Industry & Trade
People from around the world come to San Ratina to learn a myriad different trades and disciplines. It houses the sum of the Riverlands' knowledge and serves as a repository for its history.
Infrastructure
San Ratina is split across banks of the Great River. As a result, simplified teleportation circles are found throughout each half of the city to ease travel and keep the River for captains, fishers, and shipwrights in training.
Guilds and Factions
Dozens of campus clubs, murals, teams, and committees have woven themselves into the fabric of everyday life in San Ratina.
History
Affectionately known as "rats," the people of San Ratina come from a rich history of education and apprenticeship. Because Tabachacra is a sacred place, meant for spiritual exploration and self reflection, it is considered uncouth to bring worldly matters there. When southern Riverlanders wanted to share knowledge with their northern cousins, they agreed to meet in a central location away from Mananmantiaña. Over time, this meeting place development permanent education settlements so that the people of the Riverlands could share not just goods and resources, but knowledge and art and history too.
Tourism
San Ratina hosts students from Kainai, the Free Cities, Khaldasht, and beyond. People travel from around the globe for the rich opportunities provided by the city.
Architecture
San Ratina is full of open courtyards and shaded gardens. Little grows naturally in the desert region, and the architecture takes full advantage of everything that can. Small cacti with bright flowers grow in window boxes and along cobblestone paths. Vines crawl along wooden trellises. The city was built to project openness and promote discussion.
Geography
San Ratina spans the Great River's widest point. Mud and silt provide more vegetation than elsewhere in the region, but the walls of the city are built against sand. Most folks are willing to brave the scorching days for the riverside views afforded by its sheer breadth.
Natural Resources
Very little grows near San Ratina, but the River is wide and deep enough that constant travel doesn't negatively impact aquatic life.
