Guadavera
Government
The Mudkeeper is the ultimate authority in Guadavera. They are born into their position and serve until they die. Beneath them are land-owning vassals known as Mudders. Mudders oversee sections of the River and manage the farmers and crafters under their care, but ultimately answer to the Mudkeeper if their charges are unhappy or unwell.
Defences
The city is protected by mudslingers, a city guard trained mostly in the art of defending against hungry crocodiles and enraged hippos.
Industry & Trade
Guadavera provides produce to the entirety of the Riverlands. The reeds and plants that grow along this stretch of the Great River make paper and cloth that is sought-after from as far away as Kainai.
Infrastructure
Because people have to eat throughout the year, Guavans have developed a complex aqueduct irrigation system to maintain certain crops year-round.
Guilds and Factions
While there is no formal guild, the farmers of Guadavera are the most influential of the common folk. The Mudkeeper is themselves a farmer and tends to their holding's crops when matters of state allow.
History
When the Riverlands were young, itinerant farmers travelled the River after the flood season, planet crops in the nutrient-rich mud left behind. Haughty merchants laughed at them, calling them "mudkeepers." As the floodplains bore the finest harvests along the River, these "mudkeepers" became a power of their own in the growing Riverland civilzation. When they founded Guadavera, their leader took the title Mudkeeper so no one would forget where their food came from.
The Mudkeepers are a dynastic line, with the current Mudkeeper able to trace their lineage back to the original itinerant farmers.
Tourism
Generally, Guadavera is not a tourist destination. It is, however, home to the Mudstone Academy, where the greatest minds in agriculture and botany come to trade knowledge and train apprentices.
Architecture
The sand- and limestone structures of Guadavera are built to withstand the scorching desert heat and merciless desert winds. They are low, with thick walls and high windows. Guavans keep very little outdoor decoration because it is not likely to survive the environment.
Geography
The rolling dunes surrounding Guadavera sustain little life beyond snakes and scorpions. The shifting sands provide a constantly changing horizon.
Natural Resources
Where the River flows through Guadavera, it provides fresh water, arable land, edible fish, and workable fibers for the Riverlanders who make their homes there.
