La Rinza

Government

La Rinza is the youngest and smallest of the Riverlands bastions. The districts operate under democratic town halls. In matters that affect the entire city, each district must come to a 3/5 majority consensus. That decision counts as the district's vote, and the district votes are tallied for a simple majority consensus.

Defences

La Rinza sits on one large island at the mouth of the River. Its docks are patrolled night and day by the City Watch, a volunteer militia who's interest leans more toward keeping the peace and preventing theft or property damage and less toward proper justice.

Industry & Trade

La Rinza brings goods and travellers from Beneventum, the Kindred Isles, Kainai, and Viridian Hold. It provides ice, salt, and oil to the rest of the Riverlands and relies on the ore, stone, produce, and fiber from the other cities.

Infrastructure

The southern delta of the Great River is the only region in the Riverlands that has to deal with frozen waters. Icebreaker boats keep the River clear and venture just far enough into the ocean to keep passage open for incoming ships.

Guilds and Factions

It's no secret that a consortium of profit-minded individuals more or less own the City Watch. But since their wares are kept in La Rinza, it behooves the consortium to keep the city well-protected and in good spirits. Most citizens overlook its more unsavory businesses.

History

La Rinza began as a waypoint for whalers and navigators. It very quickly became an important shipping point for folks on the southern half of Zirdradh.

Tourism

No one comes to La Rinza just to visit. For those travelling through, La Rinza's hospitality industry is known for hearty stews, frothy ales, and short stays.

Architecture

The warm-hued stone from the desert Rocaroja region looks out of place in the cold southern climate. While pelts and grey hides cover windows and doors. In the summer, they're held back with whalebone clasps and winter reed ties. Smoke vents in the roofs allow firepits to be the center of the small, square buildings. Metal braziers line the muddy streets. In the cold months, they keep the cold at bay. During the spring and summer, they house tiny blue and white wildflowers that thrive in the ash from last year's fires.

Geography

La Rinza lies in a semi-arctic zone. It's summers are short and mild, with green grasses and tiny wildflowers blanketing the plains. As the days turn colder, the nights grow longer and the snow falls near constantly. Blizzards and ice storms make the delta impassable for weeks at a time. Rinzals are accustomed to long, freezing winters and rely on the greater Riverlands community to get them through the worst of it.

Natural Resources

The southern delta is rich in salt and fatty fish for oil. As the ocean freezes, the permafrost to the south is accessible via ice bridge and blocks of ice are transported north, kept magically cold by any mage with the ability.
