Ökkúš

Ökkúš was the third leader of the Maðúšýï Tribe and ruled from 24976 to 24944 AYM. His reign came after a brutal defeat at the hands of the Varonian Trade Coalition during the First Varhoŋïan War, during which his predecessor Úvremk was killed. In this respect, Ökkúš is largely credited with lifting the tribe out of that low point through large sweeping changes that completely altered their philosophy and the manner of their raiding style. Thus, it is largely because of him that the Ýmor-Maðúšýï, the so-called 'golden age' of the Maðúšýï tribe, was extended past his reign and into 24910 AYM, whereupon the tribe would fracture during the Matousian Civil War.

Biography

During Úvremk's Reign

Little about Ökkúš's life before his reign is known. He was most likely born within the Hýyó-Hayïd's eastern cities, particularly Žënhðwör, Hayïd-Entëž, or Varand. All three of these cities were founded by fleeing citizens of cities taken over by the Varhoŋïð-Khalúš, and it is probably this pervasive feeling of injustice that fueled his early involvement in the Maðúšýï Tribe's army.

Born in 25001 AYM, Ökkúš only ever witnessed the reign of Úvremk, his immediate predecessor, as the Hyvamto-Maðúšýï. Úvremk's predecessor himself, Gýbakk, would fall in the Ambush of Šahr-Óðlýn and Öðma-Amakoð that same year. Notably, Ökkúš would witness the flowering of the Tžý-Úvremk, the philosophy of raiding as developed by Úvremk himself. This philosophy was in many ways addressing the faults of the Tžý-Gýbakk, Gýbakk's own philosophy, by providing a way for the tribe's raids to continually reap from the cities even after repeated assaults.

Úvremk's other major innovation was to split the army into separate sections, or Yoži, each of which were commanded by a Hvýomað-Yoži. At this time in the Tribe's history, tribal culture and community was so tightly-knit that these Hvýomað-Yoži were trusted with absolute rule over their own section. As such, many of the social and ideological limitations were often done away with. This included the enlistment of younger and younger individuals, resulting in Ökkúš joining the army around 16 - 20 years old. For comparison, the vast majority of the army was anywhere between 35 and 60 years of age.

As part of the army, Ökkúš would have participated in many of the raids conducted during the latter half of Úvremk's reign. This comprised both the Varhoŋïð-Khalúš and the Hýyo-Wýðúr.

In 24976 AYM, Úvremk became concerned with the city of Ožërhýŋ, a city located to the extreme northwest of the Maðúšýï. Being so close to the Arbin Watershed, they had the potential to both compete with the Hýhïd-Tëžem for the rocks in the Watershed and initiate trade with the Hýyo-Wýðúr. Both of these threatened to decrease the efficacy of the raids, and so, in the Anta-Eimarae of that year, Úvremk would force the Pact of Ožërhýŋ to be signed, knowing very well that this action would cause the Hýyó-Wýðúr to go to war against them.

Ökkúš would thus participate through the War as part of the second Yoži, as led by Ghmúrr-Vašðóg.
