The Maw Rest Skirmish

The Maw Rest Skirmish was a short but decisive clash between bandit forces entrenched in Maw Tower and a combined Clan BogclutchClan Dalkurharn contingent led by The Master, The Cat (Aliza Everguard) and Amber Dalkurharn.   Following the collapse of Clan Redstone authority, Maw Rest’s newly built palisades came under repeated attack from tower-based raiders who used the height advantage and terrain to harass caravans and terrorise the settlement. When the assaults threatened to destabilise the region, the Master organised a joint strike with Bogclutch Military and a Dalkurhan detachment.

The Conflict

Prelude

Nearly a hundred bandits entrenched in the fortified Maw Tower launched repeated raids against Maw Rest’s fledgling garrison, exploiting the temperate woodland and nearby marsh terrain to strike supply caravans and test the settlement’s palisades.   With villagers killed, guards captured, and most bandit attacks ending in disorderly routs back to the tower, the Master initiated a measured feudal mobilisation across the region. He and the Cat rode from Mire Point, gathering forces in stages: twenty hunters from Duskfen, twenty five Black Fang from the capital, Mire Point, fifteen militia from Embercrack Western Watch Tower, and the remaining defenders of Maw Rest itself.   A pre warning sent to Clan Dalkurharn brought Amber Dalkurharn west with twenty five of her warriors to reinforce the strike, forming a unified coalition under a single operational command. Once assembled at Maw Rest, the combined Bogclutch and Dalkurhan force advanced on Maw Tower, beginning the swift siege that would break the bandit stronghold and restore security.

Deployment

The coalition’s deployment around Maw Tower was executed with precision, shaped by the Master’s insistence on disciplined encirclement rather than a reckless frontal charge.   Upon reaching the tower’s perimeter, the Duskfen hunters dispersed into the surrounding treeline, forming a loose perimeter of skirmishers whose role was to intercept fleeing bandits and deny them the forested escape routes they had relied on during earlier raids. The Embercrack and Maw Rest militia formed the forward block along the main approach, establishing a shielded line to absorb missile fire and draw the tower garrison’s attention.   Behind them, the twenty five Black Fang positioned themselves as the striking core, kept in reserve until the moment of the breach. Meanwhile, Amber Dalkurharn's warriors took up a flanking position on rising ground to the east, where their charge could collapse the bandits’ defensive cohesion.   The Master and the Cat remained central, coordinating signals and timing; their presence ensured the disparate forces acted as a unified body. With all elements set and escape paths cut off, the coalition tightened its formation, preparing for the decisive push that would bring down the tower’s defenders.

Battlefield

The battlefield around Maw Tower consisted of a narrow band of temperate marshland where soft earth, shallow bog pockets, and scattered trees created an uneven but navigable terrain. The tower itself stood on a slightly raised stone foundation, the only reliably dry ground in the immediate area, with marshy clearings and patches of low forest spreading outward in all directions.   To the north and west, thin woodland gave cover to light infantry and hunters, while the south and east opened into darker, denser swamp where footing turned treacherous and visibility dropped under thick undergrowth. The ground near the tower was churned and muddy from years of bandit movements, marked with narrow trails that channelled fleeing enemies into predictable paths. This mix of firm rise, bog-soft borders, and wooded escape routes made the location ideal for an encirclement, hunters could move silently through the trees, Black Fang could advance along firmer ground toward the tower, and Clan Dalkurharn knights could charge from the elevated eastern approach where the terrain briefly solidified before sinking back into marsh.

Conditions

Neutral and uncomplicated, marked by clear skies and the steady, cool air typical of the temperate lowlands surrounding Maw Rest. Visibility was excellent across the open marsh clearings and treeline edges, with no mist, rainfall, or shifting weather to hinder movement or obscure lines of sight. The ground was firm in most places despite the region’s marsh reputation, as the season had left the soil only mildly damp rather than waterlogged, allowing hunters, militia, and knights alike to manoeuvre without environmental interference. With no wind to disrupt arrows or carry sound unpredictably, the conditions favoured coordinated deployment and rapid encirclement, denying the bandits any advantage of surprise or cover.

The Engagement

The battlefield action unfolded far more swiftly than expected, as the majority of the bandits abandoned Maw Tower the moment the coalition force revealed its encirclement. In what became the decisive moment of the skirmish, nearly ninety percent of the raiders broke discipline and attempted to flee into the treeline, only to crash directly into the Duskfen hunters who had been positioned for exactly that purpose.   The hunters cut them down with volleys of shortbow fire and rapid ambush tactics, turning the rout into a chaotic slaughter before the bandits could regroup. Those who remained inside the tower fared little better, the Black Fang advanced in tight formation, their heavy armour allowing them to force a breach under minimal resistance, while Clan Dalkurharn knights surged in from the flank to finish the fighting within minutes. Between the hunters’ encirclement and the combined shock assault of the elite infantry, the bandit force collapsed completely, leaving Maw Tower cleared and the surrounding marshland secured.

Outcome

Bandit activity across the region collapsed, restoring security to the trade routes that had been strangled by constant raids. Maw Rest’s morale rose sharply as the threat that had undermined its early stability was eliminated, allowing the settlement to stabilise its palisades and resume regular patrol rotations without fear of another assault.   The success of the joint operation also strengthened early ties between Clan Bogclutch and Clan Dalkurhan. For the tower itself, the short-term result was a handover back to Clan Dalkurharn direct control.

Aftermath

The skirmish reshaped regional politics far beyond the immediate victory on the marshland battlefield. With the bandit threat eliminated and Maw Tower reclaimed, the cooperation between Clan Bogclutch and Clan Dalkurhan during the assault evolved into a formal and lasting alliance.   What began as a tactical necessity became a recognised partnership, with both clans acknowledging that shared defence and coordinated force were the only reliable safeguards in a fractured Redstone landscape. In the years following the skirmish, this alliance took institutional form within Mire Point itself, where a dedicated Dalkurhan embassy was constructed in the Foreign District to manage diplomatic relations, military coordination, and cultural exchange. The presence of a permanent Dalkurhan delegation strengthened political stability in the marshlands, ensured continued collaboration in regional security, and signalled to neighbouring factions that Bogclutch leadership commanded not only military strength but meaningful alliances. Over time, this partnership contributed to a more unified southern eastern frontier.
