Maw Rest
Maw Rest is a settlement located in central Redstone Hold. Historically a Clan Redstone outpost, the settlement became politically unstable during the upheaval of the 87th Era of Enchantment. It became the first major settlement to be incorporated into Clan Bogclutch under the leadership of The Master and The Cat (Aliza Everguard). Although it no longer serves as the clan’s capital, it remains historically significant as the birthplace of recent Bogclutch territorial governance.
Demographics
Government
The settlement is run and directly controlled by the local militia with the militia captain controlling via a military dictatorship. The militia captain reports to The Master although has defacto power over the settlement.
Infrastructure
Maw Rest possesses modest but functional infrastructure appropriate for a marshland settlement that once served as the first capital of Clan Bogclutch. Its layout reflects both its earlier Clan Redstone origins and the rapid defensive improvements made during Bogclutch occupation.
Roads and Access
The settlement is connected by packed dirt roads, suitable for foot traffic, and militia patrols.
Central Keep
The core strongpoint of Maw Rest is a converted motte and barracks structure. Originally an old Redstone military barracks built atop a small raised earth mound, it was fortified and repurposed as a keep during the first phase of Bogclutch governance. It houses the local command post, supply vaults, and a small armoury.
Barn Barracks
A large timber barn on the settlement’s edge has been converted into overflow lodgings for militia forces. It can house thirty to forty troops in crude but serviceable conditions.
Militia Camps
To support Bogclutch patrols, small militia camps are maintained outside the keep mound. These camps contain tents, fire pits, tool racks, and temporary lodgings for rotating patrol groups arriving from Maw Tower, Maw Marsh, and the Oak Trade Road.
Agricultural Plot
A small wheat farm sits on the drier patch of ground north of the motte. Though limited in yield, it provides a steady supply of grain for local rations and supports the settlement’s inn.
Defensive Works
Maw Rest is encircled by a system of wooden palisades, erected shortly after the settlement submitted to Clan Bogclutch. These defences include:
-Timber walls reinforced with vertical stakes
-Wooden watchtowers positioned at key approach routes
-Simple ditches dug into the marsh soil to hinder movement
-The fortifications proved essential during the bandit raids from Maw Tower.
Civic Structures
-A small roadside inn, primarily serving travellers, patrols, and ore caravans
-Several timber houses clustered along the main road, inhabited by agricultural workers, former Redstone families, and Bogclutch administrators
-Minor storage sheds, workshops, and animal pens supporting daily labour
History
Early Foundations
Maw Rest began as a minor Clan Redstone frontier station in the central marshlands. Originally established to monitor movement through Maw Marsh and support caravans along the interior routes, the settlement consisted of a simple barracks on a raised earth motte, several worker huts, and basic agricultural plots.
87th Era of Enchantment: Redstone Control
During the early 87th Era, Maw Rest functioned as a routine administrative and military outpost under Clan Redstone authority. The settlement’s garrison enforced local patrol rotations and maintained order.
Post–Ryth Redstone Assassination
Following the assassination of Ryth Redstone, the wider Redstone Hold fell into political fragmentation. Isolated from coherent leadership and cut off from its clan hierarchy, Maw Rest slipped into disarray.
The local garrison took full control, ultimately forming a de facto military dictatorship under an unnamed guard captain. With no external oversight, the captain ruled the settlement harshly, maintaining order through force. His regime collapsed when the Master killed him during the conflicts, leaving the settlement leaderless.
Peaceful Submission to Clan Bogclutch
In the ensuing power vacuum, the Master and the Cat, accompanied by goblin allies, marched on Maw Rest. Instead of resisting, the settlement agreed to peaceful incorporation into Clan Bogclutch, becoming the first non goblin community to align with the rising clan.
This event marked Maw Rest as the first recent capital of Clan Bogclutch under The Master and The Cat's leadership, serving as the initial administrative centre during the early consolidation of goblin rule.
Immediately following occupation:
-A wooden palisade was constructed
-Militia camps were established around the motte
-The old barracks were fortified and converted into a keep
-Patrol routes were reorganised to secure the trade paths and marsh approaches
-These developments stabilised the region and cemented Bogclutch authority.
Bandit Raids from Maw Tower
Soon after Maw Rest’s incorporation, the settlement came under repeated assault from bandits occupying Maw Tower, a nearby stone fortification. These raiders targeted the newly built palisades and disrupted trade. A strike force led by Clan Bogclutch and Clan Dalkurharn took the tower back for Clan Dalkurharn causing an alliance to form between the two clans.
Decline as Capital and Transition to Mire Point
As Clan Bogclutch expanded beyond Maw Rest, the settlement’s limited size and marshbound geography became constraints. The newly established Mire Point, larger and more centrally positioned, eventually replaced Maw Rest as the clan’s political capital.
Maw Rest remains an active outpost and fortified settlement, notable as the birthplace of Bogclutch governance and the first territory willingly aligned under the Master and the Cat.
