NMR 7B Class

The North Midland Railway 7B Class was a class of fourty 2-4-2T tank engines designed by Mathew Denman for mixed traffic services. The class recplaced the 1860s built 109 & 3A Classes of 0-4-4BTs.
The 7Bs were built by Sharp, Stewart between 1897 and 1901 in Glasgow, Scotland to a design created by Denman but outsourced to the Glasgow - based builder due to the Aclesdon Locomotive Works being full to capacity. They were used on interurban lines, running commuter trains with the C14s running the off - peak services. The design included joy valve gear and, after studying designs of other 2-4-2Ts, the radial axle pattented by Francis Webb of the London and North Western Railway was also incorporated. This resulted in freer running and more power. The first locomotive, №106, arrived at New Shelton on the Bereoir Railway before running light engine over the Great Southern & North Midland Joint Railway up to Newton Junction where the GS&NMJR connected with the North Midland. The 7Bs proved to be more than qualified for their job with a second batch, classified as the A8s, emerging from Aclesdon in 1900.
They were seen running on commuter services from when they first arrived, with other duties such as parcels trains also being assigned to them. They were not displaced until 1928 even with the inroduction of two 0-6-2T classes and an experimental 0-6-4T. All locomotives in the class were operational by the time the Etorean National Railways was formed in 1919. Withdrawals began in 1931 with some locomotives being used in (engineers) departmental service, the last to be withdrawn was №42147 (ex - NMR №30) in 1971 and scrapped in 1974. Two locomotives have been preserved with one having seen service on the TS&NJR / GS&NMJR as detailed below with the other having ran trains on the Grunham - Telston Line for over 60 years.

Use on the Tracurry, Shottesbrooke & Newton Junction Railway:
The class also saw service on the Tracurry, Shottesbrooke & Newton Junction Railway when seven locomotives were "sold" to the joint line. They were used as a way for the North Midland to exercise running rights over the Bereoir Railway as the TS&NJR had them as far as Dunkirk. The locomotives were owned by the North Midland Railway but carried the livery of and were operated by the Tracurry, Shottesbrooke & Newton Junction Railway.
