NMR 109 & 3A Classes
The North Midland Railway 109 and 3A classes were two classes of 0-4-4BT tank locomotives built for passenger trains between 1869 and 1871. They were designed by Jack Jones, initially to aid Price's G2 Class of 1863. They were essentially the same class, although the 3As had a cut down cab and condensing gear fitted for use on the NMR City Widened Line passenger trains.
The 109 Class were initially conceived to aid the G2 locomotives as the 0-4-2s were becoming underpowered on the duties they were being required to preform. The locomotives were fitted with a back tank as well as a well tank with extra coal bunkers being found either side of the cab interior. In 1869, a speed test was conducted on the main line near Théoden Wood.
Post grouping, four 109 class locomotives were modified by the ENR to have push - pull gear for working the line to Old Town Station in Redwick.
