Mathew Denman

Mathew Denman (7th June 1859 - 9th December 1937) was an Etorean Engineer who worked for the North Midland Railway.
Denman was the youngest of eight siblings, his oldest sibling was over twenty years older than he was, all were born to parents Henry and Mary (nee Locke) Denman. He was raised in the town of Lowton, staying there for all of his childhood attending both Lowton Co-Education School and St. Michael's Grammar School before he was apprenticed on the Abbots Horecombe & Hollygate Railway. In the 1880s, Denman moved to a job on the North Midland Railway as an apprentice to Benjamin McCord, the previous locomotive superintendant. In 1891, Denman replcaced McCord after he retired, taking over the design of locomotives for the NMR. It was around the time of his apprenticeship on the AH&HR that he met Esméralda Finch when he inadvertently walked into a gypsy camp. The pair later married and had four children.
He remained as the locomotive superintendant until 1908 when he moved again to the Great Eastern Railway as a member of their management board. Denman held this position until the GER became part of the ENR in 1919. Instead of going on to work for the ENR, he instead chose to retire after 44 years working for railways. He moved to Shanross, buying a house on the seafront where him and his wife lived until their deaths in 1937 and 1941. He is burried in Lowton Parish Cemetary.
