King Arvid
His Eminence Avric Vennar Rainer, king of Gand
King Avrid Halric Rainier is the current ruler of Gand and head of both the The Royal Family and the The Royal Court . Avrid has been ruling for fifteen years having taken over from his father King Halric Rainier upon his death. The past fifteen years have passed uneventfully and the kingdom has fortunately remained relatively at peace with no invasions from foreign powers nor skirmishes between the people of Gand or the other races. To Avrid this is a mark of things going right but for many this is not a reflection on Avrid's leadership but rather of the late king's and the measures put in place prior to his death. For Avrid himself many see him as a disinterested or even complacent ruler, many on the court are divided over his leadership style. King Halric was a notoriously stern man who was cold to all three of his children throughout his life upon his death bed Avrid is the old one he would allow to see him. Avrid by contrast is not a cold ruler but one who is mostly absent, the decrees he does make he does so with glee.
Avrid himself is As nonchalant about court matters as he is indulgent in pleassures outside of the court. He has a love for fine things; namely wine and women and will often avoid court matters altogether for his own personal amusements; of which there are many. He spends an excessive amount of time loafing off with the members of the The Royal Guard or distracting his closest friend Sloan Du Mar who marks an important step in the transition to king Avrid's' ruling.
Avrid ascended to the throne following his father's death it came as a surprise to everyone, including himself that he was chosen as the sucessor over his elder sister Princess Mauricia Rainier whom was much more educated on court matters and Avrid was never publically declared as the heir apparent. Avrid took the throne when he was eighteen years of age and inexperienced, his first decree as the new ruler was that a lavish tornement be held in his honour. This tornement allowed anyone to fight, knight, lords, commoners and even himself. It was during a meelee that he was knocked prone by a yound blcksmith's son Sloan Du Mar whom he would indoctrinate into his guard. A move that shocked the public and caused outrage amongst the people. This strange pattern would continue as Avrid withdrew from most matters affecting the public.
Avrid sits neutrally on most political happenings and has made little effort to foster or maintain his relationships with his allies and trade partners, at a time where Gand is more connected than ever thanks to the
Elven Network Trade Route. Zentawen flounders in exporting enough food to feed the city. Avrid did oversee the expansion of the rail network and the commissioning of a number of royal trains but this is more geared towards his own transport and the transport of guests than the common good. He recently has taken an anti smuggler stance with the rise of Bootleg Trains carrying Contraband Items.
Avrid is a perpetuator of the anti-magic stance of his father and his mother before him, he has been puppeted by noble pressure to continue the persecution of sorcerers but now works openly with the Brotherhood of Tarn to detain sorcerers for public knowledge to rehabilitate them. What isn't known is that the brotherhood is supplying Zentawen with power crystals which are also aiding their technological advancement. This too comes at a cost as the city is advancing far to quickly and is beginning to jeopardise the structural integrity of the city.
As Avrid gets older more and more of the people of Gand noble and commoner alike are beginning to feel strain of the Rainier legacy. Avrid is able to secure more supplies and resources if they begin to expand out of Gand, the best way to do this is through marriage; a sprspect Avrid is staunchly resistant to. Many have attempted to match make the King and all have failed. As he and the rest of the royal heir presumptive grow older the line grows more unsteady. If Avrid were to die or not be able to fulfil his role the kingdom would be thrown into disarray and become susceptible to attack. To make matters worse Avrid has also sabotaged many of Princess Mauricia Rainier attempts at marriage as well which would aid the stabalisation of the kingdom and of Zentawen. The fall-through of the recent match-up between Mauricia and Lord Corren Asheville has inscensed Mauricia who now seeks to step down as chancellor of the royal court. Interestingly the only royal marriage Avrid has endorsed is the one he arranged himself, the marriage between his close confidant and knight Sloan Du Mar and his younger sister Princess Lydia Rainier who are mere days away from being wed. As Sloan is a commoner this move is has lessened the royal court's opinion even more as in the event of Avrids death he is closer to the throne and most of the nobles in the court. A disaster in waiting for a man with little Forman education and experience.
