Brotherhood of Tarn

The Brotherhood of Tarn is a powerful and dominant organisation within the confines of Gand that was established in 800 EoM when it split from the main The Church of Tarn. The spit came from a result of differing politics within the church stemming from attitudes towards magic-users. This attitude formed as a response to the Elven plague which wiped out thhe entire race within a two-year period. This plague is said to have began from elven mages using dark blood magic which corrupted them into illness. It seeded a deep fear within kitham that magic could be unhygienic for the soul and contaminate others, it also conjured fears that it was a punishment from Tarm for their huberis as Tarn, is the patron god or creation and toil and magic is able to accomplish far quicker what natural means may take.   The campion of this effort was a man named Nersi, who claimed that he was an apostle from the stars, he was able to communicate with and share visions with Tarn, the Cosmic Weaver through his dreams. He named himself the Godkin a rank meaning that he was more like Tarn above than any mere mortal. This bold claim set many in the church against him but Rowans, now declaring himself as Godkin Nersi proved himself to charismatic and persuasive. He slowly gained traction and with that followers. The split was formalised and for many years the brotherhood roamed Gand completing with the church. Leading to several skirmishes and a fight for territory.   After several years the Brotherhood came upon an old elven structure, a series of towers in the mountains that conjoined to the elven city network below. It was incredibly defensivable and a strong symbol. The brotherhood declared this would be their new home and called it The Keep with this the focus shifted, with the brotherhood no longer trying to expand across the land but to become more insular and devoted. Godkin Nersi would pass away in one of his final acts he would undertake the task of weaving his own shroud, this shroud he constructed not as a blanket but as a cacoon it encapsulated him and he suffocated on his own terms. The shroud is considered a holy relic and is stored in the crypt of the keep held securely behind locked doors. Before dying Rowans passed his tile onto the new Godkin Godkin Kilthrop.   Under Godkin Kilthrop the brotherhood became far more insulated the emphasis was no longer on speaking across the land but winning an ethical, moral battle against those not of their faith. Kilthrop encouraged new members but only on the grounds that they swear absolute devotion. He also raised the ban that would prevent women from joining and the members from having families his reasoning being that children consigned to the church agt birth had to be the most faithful. The more he grew the small devoted following the more began to fret for the souls of those not aligned. His greatest fear was that those not saved would not be able to join Tarn's wealth upon death and that their soulss were wasted. Under this he shifted to collective focus to conversion of the non religious, to do this he established the paladins to preach their law, and to interact with other citizens. These paladins became known for bringing back children and wayward youths to put their energy into the church. When Godkin Kilthrop passed away he nominated his steward Godkin Hossencroft to take over the role.   Godkin Hossencroft led the brotherhood into a far sterner era, his emphasis was on managing the scourge of sorcery and removing magic individuals from society. His first act upon receiving his title was to conduct a seige on the College of Wintrow wherein he destroyed the entire wing of magic-related texts and went as far to kill serveral students and scholars. He then shifted focus to gaining a political foothold working along side the powerful elite of the major cities for most notably alongsideKing Arvid . This is in part due to the establishment of the alchemist who, created a number of new technologies and resources which became fininacially viable.

Structure

The brotherhood follows a strict military-like hierarchical structure, all new recruits and children born to members of the chruch begin as a novitiate and progress through specific titles with designated responsibilities. More details on the organisational structure a be found here: Titles within the Worship of Tarn

Culture

Initially the brotherhood of Tarn had a hyper-masculine culture they would only recruit men and these men would be forbidden from having families or owning property. This was found to be unsustainable and not conductive to the goals of expanding the church and so men were permitted to have families provided that those children were born as members of the brotherhood. After the Keep was settled it became cmmonplace for both men ad women to join and in present day any member can hol any rank regardless of gender.
At present the culture of the brotherhood is a very silloed organisation with the majority of their member spending their lives inside of the Keep, some members have never left and never intend to. Very few outside of Scribes and paladins interact with the outside world. The Brotherhood has a careful image that they project and maintain. Within the walls schedule is king, everyone works on a tight military-esque schedule and hold themselves to rigorous standards. Very few ever leave.

Public Agenda

Previously the only goal of the church was to expand and recruit members. They sought to dissuade those from using magic and to pursue a life of worship. Then the goal around the second Godkin's time was to save the souls of as many as possible preventing them form worshipping other gods and using magic, these people if they could not be converted would be indefinitely detained as to not spread their views.  Current day Broterhood has suceeded in outlawing magic and declaring those who use it as heretics. Their goal is to convert those accused of wielding it into the worship of Tarn, thereby saving their soul, once one has converted they may be retained as a member but if they have evidence of using magic they are most often killed. Many places even have law enforcement arrest those suspected of magic use to hand over to the brotherhood in exchange for power crystals. They also are seeking to leverage more and more political power and have begun to set up churches writhin the Major Cities giving them a permanent location in the heart of those areas and allowing them more and more control over the average person.

Assets

The Brotherhood has thousands of members and exponential wealth, through the work of their alchemists in the science division that have generated new technologies the ost prominent being the power crystals. The power crystals are able to act as an energy source that can power a Rune creating magic effects without the taboo of using magic directly. This has caused a massive boom in new developments, society develop faster. How the power crystals are made is only known to the Brotherhood and having a monopoly over this power allows them to receive significant financial contribution which finances their expansion. Their expansion allows them to grow in power to police common people and to collect more heretics for conversion.

Ethics

Converting Souls

The Brotherhood of Tarn officially does no condone violence unless neccessary, they view the ethics of others almost like a viral morality, capable of spreading and corrupting others. They view their actions on a scale of the greater cause and mission if one person is not faithful they may cause others to lose faith, if this is the disease than iolence is the panacea. Their goal is to save as many souls as possible which they do from converting a person must accept under their own free will that Tarn is the keeper of their soul, weather than mean forsaking another god, atoning for their misdeed or in the case of sorcerers being sent to the Keeep for rehabilitation. If paladins come across corruption and are unable to take prisoners it is not uncommon to exctract conversion by force before enacting violence and death. Entire villages have been flattened underneath the paladins boots.

Magic and Hipocracy within the Brotherhood

The internal body Although it may seen anti-thetical to the mission of the brotherhood there are examples of members using magic, these are even some socerors within the rank although they would never use that term. Magic is defined as the conversion of one's energy into magic using their mana, magic is a process of converting ones energy to impact the external world around them. In 904 EoM an alchemist put forward a thesis to suggest that mana affecting internatl processes could not ruefully be declared as magic, in much the same way as energy is converted for the body to run or jump if manna is used to affect an internal structure such as using magic to sleep better. Provided it doesn't impact the physically body. This also benefitted the scribes and alchemists at the time who had found a way to use magic to slow their bodily processes, lessening their need to sleep and eat. The impact on other bodies  In 908 EoM The definition of magic was again stretched and this time extended to the conversion of mana within the bodies of other people. It was argued that the influence of mana could be activated within another persons body. The linchpin of this discussion became those trained in the art of healing magic as it involved a healer using a persons mana their own life force to heal their body, although triggered by the expectation force (the caster) it only ultilised internal processes. This served a number of practical purposes as it allowed for healers to be on standby to assist paladins (a duty which falls to the rank of confessor) and it provides a justification for the continued existence of Aspers who also use a form of healing magic, but are safeguarded writhin orcish communities.      Magic Permissions  In order for a member of he brotherhood to use magic a member cannot simply rely on their rank. They need to hold the appropriate rank, and submit formal documentation of their skills and abilities very few spells and effects are permitted to be used. If this request is approved they undergo formal testing and demonstrations for a final grade4 of acceptance, if they pass they are permitted to use magic, if they fail more often than not they are sent for reeducation.

Sects

The brotherhood opperates on a strict conduct and belief system, it's power rests on being a hedgemongous practice with little deviation. Those who show signs of deviation such as interpretation of scripture of sacred tenets are often exsponged from th church altogether of in extreame cases. Arrested for the purpose of reeducation and taken to the cells. The closest variation in ideology comes from differing principles between rank specialisations. Paladins are notoriously fond with the tenet of justice- he great equalisers many viewing themselves as an extension of Tarns will. Scribes and alchemists in contrast live closely with the clandestine nature of fate and immutable trajectory of fate as determined by Tarn's weave manifesting a reputation as almost superstitious bunch. Confessors are known to be pragmatic and strong believers in the nature of balance, it's commonplace to cause pain and misery in their work but in doing so it allows them to preserve the balance and save more souls.
