Greatcove

The ancestral city of dwarves, Greatcove has huge sentimental value to their culture and was kept intact during its invasion by Cirris. The city also acts as the border city between Cirris and Hazra, making it a strategic location to hold as well. The large cove that gives the city its name acts as the last large port until Mistmoore or the Liltgale Isles, causing it to be crowded with sailors at all times. With all of these factors increasing the importance of the city, many of its inhabitants are richer than the average cirric citizen.

Defences

The natural defenses of the massive cove provide cover from the winds and rain of Artivals storms, and a border guard is kept by Cirris to hold the line in the event of a surprise invasion by Hazra.

Industry & Trade

Silver is Greatcove's only physical trade option, though the architectural knowledge of the dwarves could also be said to be one of the exports of the city.

Infrastructure

Greatcove is built into the side of the cove's walls, with many tiers and connecting caves providing a fairly large space to live in. More enterprising dwarves have dug deep into the mountain behind the city to create more room, though it is generally more dangerous to live in and thus more unpopular.
The stone docks of Greatcove, built by the Hetarchs early on in the city's history, are both large enough to support the biggest of Hazra's trade barges and sturdy enough to survive a ship crashing directly into the city (an event that has happened dozens of times over the course of the city's existence).

Assets

The city boasts an impressive navy base directly inside the mouth of the cove that keeps it safe and dissuades pirates from coming too close to the port.
Silver is mined a few miles to the north of the city in a secret location in the mountains. The silver acts as Greatcove's only major export.

Guilds and Factions

There is a chapter of the Explorer's Society present in the city, as well as an outpost for the First and a building to house travelling members of the House of Roses.

History

While the exact founding date is unknown, the city has been around since at least as long as Stormhaven. When it was discovered the cove entrance was only a few feet wide, with most of the tides entering and exiting through small underground fissures. As the city grow so did the cove entrance, until it spanned two hundred feet wide and over eighty feet tall. After the opening of the cove, the dwarves built the stone docks that last to this day.

Four hundred years ago, the dwarf lands were taken by Cirris slowly but surely until Greatcove was the only holdout. In the face of losing their treasured city, the dwarves, led by the Hetarch clan, made a deal with Cirris that allowed them to remain in control of the territory as long as they followed the commands of the cirric leaders. This technically makes Greatcove a city-state, but without any foreign support to free it from Cirris' grasp, the dwarves consider it to be unofficially cirric land.

Architecture

The elegant, curved architecture of the dwarves is a shown in all of its glory in the city. Mosaics and tiles are used in spades, making it look similar to middle-eastern decoration.

Geography

The cove sits under a large mountain and is otherwise surrounded by the Arheim Sea. Two entrances by land exist to allow for foot traffic to pass through, though since Cirris has closed its borders and Hazra has no large cities nearby, there is generally very little and so the entrances are kept small.

Natural Resources

A silver mine to the north of the city is its main resource, but fish migrate to a nearby outcropping every year allowing fishermen to harvest them.
