Anatomy
Lesser water elementals often take the form of small waves, rippling spheres, or serpent like streams of water with faint faces shimmering within. As they grow more powerful, they swell into massive waves, whirlpools, or tidal surges. Some assume shapes resembling great sea serpents, aquatic beasts, or humanoid forms sculpted from ever moving currents.

Water elementals are one with their element, able to swim at speeds of 5 to 10 miles per hour in any direction. Their movements are so powerful they can generate whirlpools or vortices within natural waters.
They can manipulate their fluid bodies into devastating forms—striking with pressurized blasts, cutting blades of water, or simply overwhelming foes with crushing waves. As with all water, contact with their form leaves objects and creatures soaked, sometimes to dangerous effect if they remain engulfed.
Water elementals are completely immune to water and water-based magic, which passes through them harmlessly. However, they are vulnerable to wind-aligned spells and effects, which can scatter their bodies, disrupt their cohesion, and weaken their strikes.
Pathfinder Rule: Water elementals have vulnerability to wind-based spells.
Growth Rate & Stages
On the physical plane, water elementals grow stronger as they absorb more magical energy. Over long periods, a water leyline can give rise to vast, towering elementals the largest ever seen outside divine influence.
In the metaphysical and divine realms, however, their growth is less understood. Despite endless access to sustenance, they vary widely in form, size, and intelligence. Scholars debate whether divine will fixes their forms, or if metaphysical laws unknown to mortals govern their nature.
Ecology and Habitats
Like all elementals, they exist across three realms:
- Physical Realm Found near water ley lines, oceans, rivers, lakes, and other vast sources of water.
- Metaphysical Realm Primarily dwell in the Realm of Water, as well as other planes where water and magic intermingle.
- Divine Realm Found within the domains of Mizu Goddess of Water and Douglas the God of Taint, where their essence carries divine resonance.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Physical Realm They draw nourishment from ambient water mana in the air and leyline nodes. They can also drain energy from water attuned crystals, which revert to normal leyline crystals once consumed.
Metaphysical & Divine Realms Immersed in abundance, they continuously absorb the natural water essence of their environment without effort.

Average Intelligence
Physical Realm They possess animal-like intelligence, acting on instinct and territorial defense. Unlike fire elementals, they are often calmer and more cautious. Many prefer to overwhelm intruders with forceful waves, then retreat rather than pursue.
Metaphysical & Divine Realms Larger water elementals often display true sentience. When summoned, huge or greater ones can communicate, their voices echoing like crashing waves mingled with haunting, melodic song.
Their personalities tend to be calm, reflective, and soothing but when provoked, their fury is like a raging sea, relentless and terrifying.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Water elementals perceive the world through thermal vision, distinguishing heat and cold rather than shapes. This grants them clarity even in complete darkness.
Additional senses:
Hearing Sensitive to vibrations in water and air, allowing them to detect distant movements.
Touch They perceive the shape and flow of objects, but not texture, sensing disturbances in the medium around them. Within water, this sense becomes sharper, giving them a near 360° awareness.
