Tabitha Hartchild
Burgeoning Reporter | Loyal Daughter | Aristocratic Busybody
Tabitha Caroline Hartchild
Archivist’s Excerpt from: A Tale of Almost Two Cities: Orphan Heights & Related Histories, CVI 42:4
Eldest child of Inspector General Alec Hartchild, Tabitha is stiff, rigid, a sensible young lady of Orphan Heights, known for her sense of propriety, order, law, and sense of general nosiness. This naturally leads her into a burgeoning interest in reporting, a desire she hopes to pursue in the near future. Although the favourite of her father's, simply by virtue of being his beloved daughter, Tabitha Hartchild has very little to do with her father's work.
During her school days, she was surprisingly not sent to More Academy for more than her first few years, despite the expectation among the aristocracy, but the Hartchilds land on the edge of what is considered true nobility and could no longer afford the expense.
Even their home in Sparrowdale, Kilnhaven Hall, rests on the very rim of what is considered lands occupied by the Aristocracy and the "rest" of Orphan Towne, a position symbolic yet literal of where the Hartchilds stand.
Tabitha, being quite out of her element upon arriving at her new school in Attistock, was befriended by kindred intellect Agnes Esker, as well as the rest of her poor Tramrunner family, by extension. Where Agnes Esker desired always to pursue academics, not as a career, but as a field of study, Tabitha Hartchild desired journalism. Their friendship overlapped in a mutual interest in seeking truth, and both girls could be a dog with a bone, when it came to it. Tabitha's intention was to work for the High Times, but her initiative took something of a blow when she lost her best friend in 1894.
Following Agnes's death, Tabitha retreated into something of a slump. She withdrew from the Esker family, but would never miss Agnes's memorial service on the annual date of her death.
