Varrick Stormbreaker

In all the history of Aryllia, few have lead as pitiful an existence as Varrick Storbreaker.   Varrick Stormbreaker is the middle child of the Stormbreaker family. While he wasn't born with the strength of his older brother, Balnor, or the innate charm of his sister, Claudia, he was born with a prodigious mind. He spent most of his childhood delving into books in order to gain as much knowledge as possible. Varrick eventually developed into an accomplished Wizard and served as head of the Royal Arcane Advisory Division. He served in that position until it was announced that Claudia would be married to Dante Hawthorne. At that time, Varrick resolved to go with Claudia and serve as an advisor to Dante.   Varrick attempted to dissuade Dante from having Virgil be altered. However, Dante refused Varrick's petition. Unable to change Dante's mind, Varrick suggested that Orren Bafflestone perform the operation.   Claudia expressed extreme dissaproval of the operation and placed some of the blame on Varrick. Varrick attempting to defend himself argued that Virgil wasn't even Claudia's son and that she shouldn't worry. This drove Claudia to strike Varrick and storm out to confront Dante.   Varrick was permanently changed by the death of his sister. When he was led to believe that Dante was behind Claudia's death, Varrick strangled Dante to death.   Later, Asmodeus in the form of Johannes Faust approached Varrick and offered to resurrect Claudia in return for Varrick's services. Varick agreed.   As part of this deal, Varrick infiltrated the Blue Dawn and rotted it from within. Those who followed him created the organization known as The Scarlet Horizon. The Scarlet Horizon served King Stormbreaker in his goals to create a new Kingdom and make the Material Plane into the tenth layer of hell.   After the Bear Hill Revolution ousted King Stormbreaker, Varrick withdrew the Scarlet Horizon into its secret hideouts. In one of these hideouts Varrick discovered an interplanar pocket that linked to Orcus' layer of the Abyss. There Varrick learned all the secrets of Necromancy and achieved Lichdom.   Varrick directed agents of the Scarlet Horizon to attack Beatrice Hawthorne at her coronation as Duchess of Norwich. He was later defeated during the retaliation of Team Deicide. He retreated to his tower in the Far North where he kept his Phylactery.   Team Deicide moved against him, however he decided not to resist. He instead explained to them that he regretted his actions and wished to repent. He surrendered his Phylactery to Rian Ozmid; however Faust attacked and took the Phylactery for himself. He destroyed the Phylactery and turned Varrick into a soul coin.   Varrick was brought back from his state as a coin in the Shadowfell. He then assisted Team Deicide in their attempt to ressurect Claudia Stormbreaker. He spent some time living in the Shadowfell with Virgil before Faust, taking a new bestial form assaulted Virgil's domain and went to claim Varrick's soul. In an attempt to take the soul coin first, Valros Caecior killed Varrick. This resulted in Varrick's soul being taken.   It was then that Varrick was taken down to the deepest pits of existence. Deep below Nessus is a realm that feeds into the Negative plane of energy called Tartarus. There Varrick encountered Ahriman, the primordial deity of all evil and disorder. Ahriman promised Varrick that if he were to assist the great serpent in the creation of a new world, it would be made in Varrick's image. Varrick agreed to conduct the ritual to resurrect the inert god. However, Varrick did not trust Ahriman and created his own plan to absorb the essence of Ahriman and claim that power for his own. The ritual occurred when Deicide came to retrieve Varrick from Tartarus. Though instead of absorbing Ahriman, the serpent was resurrected and consumed Varrick and the party, thus beginning the Great Cataclysm.   For 30 years, Varrick was believed to be dead. But Baator needs a king, and Varrick's soul existed in the ether. For years, Varrick worked in the shadows, gathering followers and amassing enough power on the material plane to return and have his vengeance on the world he says rejected him. All he needed was the right opportunity. And with the fall of Adran Amakiir and the apparent retirement of Valros Caecior, the opportunity appeared.
