Azure Chain
The Azure Chain is a volcanic archipelago located between Dinoterra and Dracoria, but was originally located on the planet Pern. The islands are lush and tropical, with clear lagoons and a year-round warm climate. The largest island has a slumbering volcano where the Kelar Weyr is located. The other islands each have their own specialty, including:
- harper hall
- craft halls
- herd beasts, wherrys, and others used for food live on most islands
- mineral deposits
- medical plant nirvana
- wood nurseries
- fruit orchards
- phosphene deposits
- each island has its own seahold
- etc
- Geology: this is the only island with an above sea level caldera. There is also a large area of land that provides an apron of land surrounding the volcano.
- Holds: Kelar Hold, various Sea Holds
- Ecosystem and Trade:
- Specialty: animal husbandry
- Flora: vegetation is sparse and live in specific niches, including tough, deep-rooted scrub-moss and ash-grass that stabilize the ash and rocky soil. These are crucial for preventing erosion but are nutrient-poor. Small groves of hardy, heat-tolerant trees grow on the sheltered slopes.
- Fauna: is mainly a home for insects, small lizards, rodents, and goats who thrive on poor vegetation. Some trained Whers travel these slopes to patrol the perimeter and warn of any intrusion.
- Key Features: The Aethene Shield keeps the slopes free of local magical creatures, where only local mundane life thrives.
- Flora: This area is managed by the Riders. Terraced gardens grow staple foods like grains, root vegetables, greens, and herbs in volcanic soil mixed with sea compost. They concentrate on dense, fast-growing plants.
- Fauna: aside from the Dragons and fire lizards, the area is populated by domestic animals, like herdbeasts. The fire lizards keep the pest animals and insects in check.
- Flora: There are extensive land and aquatic plants that grow in this area. On land, many fruit and nut trees abound. Underwater, there are dense Kelp Forests and Sea-Fringe Algae that grow rapidly in the warm waters. They form the base of the food chain, and are harvested by the farmers of the hold.
- Fauna: various land and sea animals live in the area, including: wherrys, fish, and crustaceans.
- Key Features: Symbiosis--this zone is the domain of the Shipfish (Dolphins), they patrol the reefs and the sea around the islands.
- Geology: a low-lying limestone island formed over an ancient, submerged volcanic dome. This island features numerous shallow, protected coves and deep, clear lagoons.
- Holds: home to Spinner's Isle Hold, run by the Weaver Craft.
- Ecosystem and Trade:
- Lagoons: wealth is found in the depths, rich in both seafood and ocean plants. Most life found there produces various dyes and pigments (purple, deep red, cobalt blue) when processed. This pigment is a valuable trade item with both Dinoterra and Dracoria.
- Fauna: has excellent fishing of Aquatica's colorful reef fish. The fisherman also farms beds of large pearl oysters, which provide both food and trade goods.
- Specialty: dyes, trade, and intricate, waterproof textiles. The Weavers here are masters of sail-making and creating strong, supple, waterproof hides.
- Geology: an expansive, flat, and warm reef system barely above sea level, covering a submerged, dead volcanic cone.
- Holds: home to Coral Shelf Hold, managed by the Healer Craft annex.
- Ecosystem and Trade:
- Kelp Farms: the primary feature are vast, managed Kelp Forests and Algae Beds. Several varieties of kelp, some edible, others possessing powerful antiseptic or pain-relieving properties, are vital resources for the Healer Hall at Kelah.
- Wherry Pens: calm, shallow waters allow the island to host the largest and most successful Wherry Pens, providing much of the protein tithe for the Weyr.
- Specialty: Medicinal herbs (sea extracts), healing supplies, and staple protein.
- Geology: a tall, conical island--the sheer remnants of a volcanic plug that solidified and resists erosion. It is extremely windy and often shrouded in coastal fog.
- Holds: home of Mistwatch Hold, managed by the Harper Craft.
- Ecosystem and Trade:
- Sparse Life: the island has harsh, windy conditions, which means very little grows here except tough grasses and hardy ferns; no large livestock lives here, but small, hardy goats and mules can survive.
- The Beacon: This island is dedicated to communication. A series of reinforced stone towers holds the vital Dragondrum relay stations, allowing the messengers to send signals to the other islands
- Early Warning: the high peak makes it the best location for tracking distant weather patterns and the flight paths of their Draconian neighbors. There is a branch in the Harper Hall that is specialists in Knowledge (weather) and are the Weyr's eyes and ears.
- Specialty: Navigation, weather prediction, and Dragondrum communication relays.
