Kelah Weyr
Kelay Weyr is an island chain that lies almost equidistant between the North and South continents on the far-distant planet Pern. This is a fighting dragon weyr, and the military compound that houses them.
Purpose / Function
Defend the inhabitants of the island chain.
Sensory & Appearance
Because of its volcanic history, the islands constantly smell of sulfur and similar gases. Volcanic rock is the backbone of the islands, with various types scattered around.
Denizens
Dragons, firelizards, tunnelsnakes, herdbeasts, riderbeasts (like a cross between a camel and a horse). As well as:
- pony
- mule
- dog
- sheep
- goat
- wherry: flightless seabird
- shipfish: sentient dolphin
Contents & Furnishings
The furniture is sturdy and utilitarian; the young dragons and their impressed teenage riders share quarters. Their are no wooden internal doors as wood is too scarce, they use curtains instead. In the upper levels, walls and floors are covered to keep the rooms warmer. No closets, they use armoires, chests, or shelves instead.
Valuables
Semiprecious stones can be mined from some of the tunnels.
Hazards & Traps
The volcano is dormant, but not extinct, there is still flowing lava deep below. Tunnel snakes live in the deepest tunnels. Some of the tunnels can have a buildup of noxious gases.
Special Properties
Hot mineral springs, connected to a cool water underground spring. A type of natural stone that disrupts magic cast in the area or targeting it.
Alterations
Some of the deeper caves and tunnels have had to be shored up as the caldera aged to prevent collapse.
Architecture
This is a military complex carved into the extinct volcano it is built into. It is very simple, utilitarian style with little ornamental style. Later generations carved historical depictions of the dragons and their history.
Defenses
It has heavy walls. steep inclines, narrow walkways, arrow slits, and various dragon aeries and internal living quarters.
History
While on Pern, they were a new weyr. For some, it was a vacation location, and often guest quarters for those traveling to the Southern Continent that needed to acclimate to the weather before reaching the hotter climes.
During The Chaos Wars, a wild magic storm caused a dimensional shift caused the whole island chain to shift to my planet of Aquatica. It is now located in between Dinoterra and Dracorus.

Environmental Effects
The lower levels are warmer than the upper ones, because of their closeness to the inner chambers of the volcano and its lava.
