Electromagical Agriculture on Capepo

Magically charged crops are abundant on Capepo, and those on the electromagnetic spectrum are some of the most dangerous. Botanists and farmers alike have teamed up to concoct the most extravagant methods of harvesting these crops, given that many of them are explosive to the touch, fry your nervous system, or are so hot anything evaporates in its vicinity. The innate passion for farming in capsain culture means that no crop goes un-harvested.

Electromancy

Electro Pulse Detector by Mochi
I've been practicing this magic for seventy years now. Can't even shake someone's hand without giving them an electric shock.   One time I reset someone's pacemaker.
— Elderly electromancer

Electromancy is often seen as one of the more powerful forms of magic. With it, one can control electromagnetic waves, alter the patterns and movement of thunderstorms and lightning, and generating electricity.

Practicing this magic has long-lasting after-effects. You become hot to the touch, fingers pulsating with electrical energy. Vibrant patterns emerge on your skin, etching outlines of lightning all over the body.

Electromancy isn't necessarily a popular magic to practice on Capepo, but it powers much of their technology.

Notable Electromagical Crops

Booming Lotus

Precious plants endemic to just a single island in northern Barbas.

Current Currant

Sparkling currants that grow in abundance around Barbas.

Tasetouch

Named after its ability to temporarily paralyse anyone that touches the elongated fruit's tip.

Stormsurge Sugarcane

Sugar harvested from this crop is incredibly sour and sparkly.

Thunderbolt Banana

These fruits give an electrifying shock when eaten. Best consumed in small doses.

Wattberry

Delicious berries that produce electrical energy when crushed. Wattberry paste is used to add a spicy kick to dishes.

Specialised Machinery

Hovering Harvester by Mochi
I love my combine so much. I painted it my favourite colours. Neighbours say it's an eye-sore.
— Happy farmer

In order to harvest the more dangerous crops many ingenious contraptions have been designed.

Gliding silently across sugarcane plains are the hovering harvesters, gigantic disc shaped combine that uses powerful magnets to suck up crops.

Electromagical crops are either positively or negatively charged, and these combines use a series of magnets to attract fully grown material.

Hovering harvesters work day and night, powering through by siphoning electrical energy from the plants they harvest. The only time these grand machines need to stop is to have their storage silos emptied, or for refurbishments.

Electro Pulse Detector

These handheld gadgets are used to detect electromagic levels in a plant, determining how safe it is to handle.

Hovering Harvester

One of the most iconic gadgets to come out of Capepo. Fully automated and self-sustaining. Other planets have stolen this design.

Magnetic Dampening Silos

Richer farmers can afford magnetic dampening silos, cutting down on noise pollution and electrical energy leaking out.

History

Agriculture has been the cornerstone of capsain culture for almost six hundred thousand years. The discovery of agriculture completely shifted the way of life for capsains, the people of Capepo. As a whole, electromagical crops have been avoided simply due to being dangerous.

Stormsurge Sugarcane by Mochi

Before the concept of magic was really understood by capsains, these plants were seen as manifestations of evil and vengeance.

Gradually, knowledge and understanding of magic and its various forms improved, and societal view of electromagical plants changed. Capepo's Magical Revolution took place around ten thousand years ago, where people began perfecting the magical craft.

Electromagical agriculture became semi-popularised around the same time. While it never dominated the agricultural industry, improvements in the understanding of magic meant that harvesting these crops became much easier.

Simple machines and gadgets were designed to safely harvest explosive crops, as well as analyse the magical potential in plants, and study them for their components.

Capepo's Space Age meant the demand for magical crops increased tenfold. Exporting these valuable foods to other planets became Capepo's biggest profit, and the demand for electromagic crops specifically increased. Their usecase stretches far beyond just consumption, and millions across the Milky Way are keen on getting their hands on some of Capepo's most rare and elusive plants.

Congratulations everyone, we have hit our sales goal for the year in just two months! The demand for our delicious foods is increasing more than we ever expected. Pretty soon, we are going to become the biggest exporter of fruits and vegetables in the entire solar system.   This is all thanks to your hard work. I mean, I did most of the work. It takes a lot to run a global company. But you guys are alright, too.

The imagery, the nearly ever running machinery, the sheer mental hoops to guide a reader through trying to imagine what electrically charged crops might look like, and do, however you paint (literally and with your words) an amazing image, guiding the reader through those hoops. This is some amazing sci-fi lead writing, really got me picturing it vividly and it truly looks wildly and absurdly alien, yet inherently I can understand what I'm imagining on a basic level because agriculture.   Also that CEO quote at the end is to ***ing real Mochi, like damn, like that's just a touch of "the more things change, the more some things stay the same."

Interesting concept. So you need to be an electromancer to be able to harvest those crops? Or why would anyone decide to become one, based on those side effects?

Jul 1, 2025 18:29 by Mochi

You don't need to be an electromancer to harvest these crops, but it sure helps! Having existing knowledge of handling electromancy is really beneficial. It's either electromancers becoming farmers, or farmers experimenting with electromagical fruit :D
Most people harvest these fruits because they're extremely profitable!

The Harvesters look amazing. Would they need to crush the plant before extracting energy? How much energy do they take to run over a day?   Typos: "...handheld gadgets are used to detect electromagic levels in a planet..." and "...crops are either positively and negatively charged..."

Jul 1, 2025 18:33 by Mochi

Thank you so much! It depends on what they're harvesting. If they're harvesting sugar cane, the harvesters probably crush the cane for its juice, which is then drawn out of the machine and put into other (land-based) machines to be turned into sugar.
I've not figured out how much energy it takes to run a harvester, but I don't really need to think about it given they are self-sustaining!   Thank you, typos fixed!
