Campaign 2: The Gal Pals
Summary

Most know him as a criminal networker in the Galendran underworld. He puts on a flippant attitude, lies as easily as he breathes, and uses connections to get others to do hard work for him.
The few who know him past his performance, however, know he may be the city's best chance at recovery.

This article is focused on Nisora, the lawless black market planet.

Player Character

At fifteen years old, test subject Thirteen is their first success. And they'll never know.

They'd put him through a hell of injections and shocks and incisions and pain, all to give him the very psychic abilities that now let him escape. He'd laugh about it he didn't feel like choking.

Twelve is asleep when Thirteen sneaks out without her. It's not his fault his brain implant broke and hers didn't. He pauses at the room she shares with six others and thinks, I'll come back for you.

He relies on luck and precognition to fly a stolen ship to freedom. Days later, he stows away on a shuttle heading somewhere far away. Watching the planet grow smaller and smaller he thinks, I promise I'll be back.

Over years, he builds a new life under the guise of a different name. A series of lies forms a new truth of who he is. His first tattoo is the king and queen of hearts across his chest to conceal the 1 and 3 he's had his whole life. Fresh ink to bury the mark the Emerald Legion left on him.

He doesn't think much of it. He's not Thirteen anymore. He's Trey. And Trey is never going back.

History

Test Subject

Thirteen was lucky. Not that lucky, otherwise he wouldn't be an Emerald Legion test subject trapped on the sunny side of Xeros. But he was lucky enough to have survived fifteen years, to get psychic abilities out of it, and to have a broken brain implant no longer monitoring his every move. It didn't even alert the Legionnaires of their first success in their attempts to force kids into psions.   His growing abilities in precognition were how he knew when he'd have opportunity to steal a ship and escape. Problem was, there were a dozen other kids just like him that he'd have to leave behind. He couldn't even tell Twelve, his closest friend, that he was leaving. He silently promised he'd return to free them all one day, and left.   Thirteen had never piloted a ship before, but he was lucky. He made it to the night side of Xeros before losing control in a crash landing that left him with only minor injuries. Within days, he was a stowaway on a shuttle leaving the planet.

Networker

As much as he wanted to fulfill his promise, Thirteen couldn't bring himself to face the Compound again. He buried his guilt and his past behind a new persona. Assuming the name Trey, he spent years taking odd and often extra-legal jobs as he planet hopped. Once he had the funds, he concealed the giant 13 on his chest behind a tattoo of the king and queen of hearts - a blade hid the 1, and a heart the 3.   In his early 20s, he settled in Nisora's largest city and established himself as a criminal networker - the guy who always knew a guy. A decade later, he was informant to gang members, reporters, and middle-managers alike. To avoid affiliating with any particular group, he'd built careful networks of contacts and lies. Remaining neutral was dangerous balancing act, but one he enjoyed performing.

The Gal Pals

Neutrality Shattered

"It's New Year's Day! This couldn't have waited a week? Do you know how many people I called? No one would take the job. Even Roger said no, and he never says no to work!"
— Trey has complaints

Appearance

Thirteen was forbidden from most self-expression, but Trey has taken full advantage of his freedom.
  • He's grown his black, curly hair longer, often wearing it in a bun to show off bright red and gold streaks like a bird's plumage.
  • The tattoo on his chest was only the start. Line art of cards, dice, roulette projectors, and other trappings of the standard holocasino cover his brown skin from the neck down. UV light illuminates the many hidden colors.
  • Clean-shaven and in well-tailored clothes, he always gives the impression of being completely in control.

A job from investigative reporter Jorie Grey ruined everything. She'd already hired Atticus de León as a bodyguard, but wanted an additional escort for a visit to the mysterious research base orbiting the planet. Worse, she had the audacity to do so on New Year's Day. With none of his usual contacts available, Trey had to go himself.   Every researcher at the base was dead when the trio arrived. The sole survivor was an alien named Bry. The Syndicate made the facility to create a VI shell for him that would look identical to a human. Their attacker was the Perimeter Agency, who'd deemed Bry a galactic threat.   The trio evaded Perimeter's backup and brought Bry to the safety of the planet's surface. At the time, Trey saw Perimeter as a threat to the balance he'd fostered within Galendra, and Bry as a possible bargaining chip.   Despite his connections and hookups, Trey had always kept everyone at a distance. The subsequent months of working with the others and growing closer to Bry forced him to face truths he hadn't in twenty years.

Facing the Past

Necessity pulled Trey back to Xeros. The Gal Pals - as he, Jorie, Atticus, and Bry were now known as - needed to lay low, and Jorie's mother was deathly ill. Upon arrival, they learned the only thing that could save Jorie's mother's life was a medicine only carried by the Emerald Legion. And only Trey knew of the existence of the Compound.   Trey contacted his former prison and offered to himself in exchange for the needed medicine. The Compound had a new leader who'd always been slightly less cruel than other Legionnaires. At his side was Twelve. The last survivor of their old group, she now tried to make life more bearable for the next generation.
"I'd planned to blow this whole place up, but now that I'm here... I think you need it more than I do."
— Trey, handing a detonator to Twelve
At the exchange, the Legion betrayed them. Trey left the others behind to escape with the medicine, but he wasn't a frightened teenager anymore. Even on Xeros, he had connections and allies. Under the cover of a solar eclipse, he made good on promises 20 years old and brought an end to the Compound.

Putting Pieces Together

Trey returned to Nisora changed. More willing to see the Gal Pals as his friends, more accepting of his feelings toward Bry, and more willing to do what was needed. He confronted Perimeter's trial, and under Oath, shared information he'd previously planned to take to the grave. He burned bridges with factions that no longer served him, built new ones with other groups, and even tempted death to save the city.   It wasn't without cost. His near-death experience damaged his psionics. Whatever recovery is possible will take time and effort. From a new secret location, he works to rebuild what was lost and create a new balance in the city between factions new and old. One of his biggest concerns is the growing cult surrounding Jorie, and how she seems to be implanting memories in people to get them to follow her.   Whatever happens next, he won't face it alone. A fact he's still coming to terms with.

Author Commentary

Mix and Match(making)
I'd expected Twelve to be Trey's romantic interest initially, but Trey and Bry had immediate chemistry. Possibly helped by the facts that Trey's player is my husband (then fiance) and Twelve wasn't brought in until later.
Turntables
Nobody thought Trey would end the campaign in a healthy relationship and Jorie in a manipulative one.

Connections

Atticus de León
Though Trey considers Tic a friend, he also knows the veteran is highly susceptible to Jorie's manipulation.
Bry
It'll likely to take years still before Trey is willing to admit how happy he is to have Bry with him.
Jorie Grey
Trey knows of Jorie's telepathic manipulations, and despite their history, sees her as a threat to his goals.
Skullder
The trust Trey had with the Cryptix leader is broken, but there's room for a new type of partnership going forward.
K-Ra
Trey will need to deal with K-Ra's anger at some point, but for now she's the most influential Wyre Rat in Galendra.
Twelve
Trey's childhood friend is trying to start a life on Nisora, unaware of Trey pulling strings in the background to help.
Alice
The pirate queen is a valuable ally, especially as another precog suffering from Legion machinations.
Mys. Yasmin Ada
The psionic tutor might be Trey's best hope of repairing his psionics. If he'll accept her help.
Gal Pals
Under Tic and Hester's leadership, Trey has filed the new Gal Pals as a fighting force, should one be needed.
Cryptix
Now under new leadership, Trey could use Cryptix as a stabilizing force while Galendra recovers.
Wyre Rats
Trey can use the Rats for their technical expertise, as well as a reminder of certain Nisoran ideals of independence.
Nisora United
Trey knows the Union will fail, but he needs to keep tabs on what they become afterward, and who will shape that.
Mother of the Stars
Jorie's cult grows, and Trey needs to be prepared for the possibility that she won't stop until she claims the city.

Trey stands between K-Ra and Skullder. Their violent intentions for each other hang thick in the air. He had to trick them into coming, knowing they'd never willingly meet to discuss a truce. With Perimeter gone, someone needs to do something, and somehow Trey has become that someone.

"I agree to your terms," Skullder says. He holds out a hand to shake on it, but the skull tattoo on his face turns his smile into a predator's warning.

K-Ra paces, curses bubbling from her throat. "Fine. But I won't touch him."

Trey holds out a hand to both of them, the intermediary of the peace treaty. It won't last forever, but it will let people focus on rebuilding instead of killing each other for now. And will give him some space to figure out what to do about Jorie.

Such a great character. I love the contradiction of health-conscious vegan and willing to try anything once, including drugs. Such a real life person thing. :)

What's more human and relatable than cognitive dissonance? :D We are very rarely consistent creatures...
