Summary

With a muscular frame and heavy brow, Brian Evers looks the part of a bouncer. In truth, being a professional gardener on Devali isn't too different.
His artistry is sector-renown for its macabre and haunting nature, a style borne out of war and a desire to come to terms with the ugly parts of life.

But there is one name only ever whispered, whose work is commissioned only in secret: Brian Evers.   His career as a gardener began in the wake of the Monhalian Uprising. It was in this environment, the violent splitting of our continent, that Mr. Evers carved his niche. Where others peddled in delicate beauties, he cultivated plants known for their poisons, ones brandishing thorns as long as your hand or marks that looked like skulls.

History

Hopeful Enlisted

Brian's skill as a gardener and landscaper came as a result of war. Like many his age, Brian had been eager to support his country of Abraia when tensions with its southern half threatened to turn violent. He enlisted as soon as he was old enough, and due to his skills in telepathy and hand-to-hand, his officers made him an infiltrator. He would integrate into isolated enemy squads - now calling themselves Monhalian - to spy and, on occasion, to assassinate.   As consequence of these orders, he spent more time with "the enemy" than with his allies, and knew Monhalian soldiers more intimately than he did Abraian. Through telepathy, he gathered different perspectives and came to realize Abraia wasn't the valiant hero defending against Monhalian villains like he was led to believe. All soldiers were pawns, killing each other for a politician's bottom line.

Disillusioned Veteran

Though he left with an honorable discharge, Brian felt little honor in his service. No one in the capitol listened to his pleas to end the war, and he returned to his family's idyllic vineyard wrought with guilt and nightmares. His family, especially his younger sister Loren, supported him through his worst days, when the flashbacks gave him no peace. To distance himself from his past military life, he changed his name to the Brian Evers he's known as today.   Gardening became an outlet and way to cope. It allowed him to cultivate life after years contributing to a system that took life away. He favored the plants most ignored - the ugly, dangerous, and grotesque. In the wake of the war, that's exactly how he felt: an unwanted thing to be culled for something more pleasing. If his country insisted on hiding from ugly truths, he would find ways to bring it to light.

Guerilla Gardener

As his health improved, Brian took up guerilla gardening to protest the ongoing war. He used Devali's aggressive plant life to express the trauma of war in otherwise-idyllic Abraia Central. And call for an end to it.   He'd plant tangled vines to block access to voting chambers, arrange cascading red flowers to mimic blood, or leave clear messages with the language of flowers. On the day the peace treaty was signed, he planted a garden in the shape of the flag of the new Monhalian Union right outside Abraia senate offices.

Floral Artist

Afterward, he continued fostering macabre and grotesque plants. His table at street markets always stood out - a dark spot in a sea of vibrancy. For a while, the only customers he got were those being contrarian. Over time, more came to appreciate what he offered.   Today, his work appears across the sector. He's made sets for films, gardens for mourning families, exhibits for botanic museums, and displays for the rich drawn to the taboo. A garden is only a garden, but his seek to give people the courage to face life's ugly truths.

Today

Brian now has a modest home in the Abraian hills. Dangerous plants throughout the yard discourage onlookers, and he's made it clear he has no interest in entertaining uninvited guests. Many consider his preference for privacy over fame to be a major contributing factor to his impeccable professional record. His focus is on his work, not his notoriety.   While his days of (alleged) vandalism may be behind him, he remains outspoken against acts of war and in favor of reparations with the Monhalian Union. His name, work, and even presence are common features among anti-war events, from protests to fundraisers. This has earned as many critics as supporters — between this and is continued absence at veteran events, former soldiers and the devoutly patriotic are his most vocal detractors.   In a recent interview, he confirmed rumors that he recently married his long-term boyfriend in a private ceremony. He expressed, in no uncertain terms, the desire for continued privacy regarding his personal life. Even the most determined paparazzi respects such a request, recognizing the risk of death-by-plant if they don't.

Trivia

Though Brian has never said so, others like to claim he'd only date someone who could win an arm wrestling match against him.
He hides a rubber duck or similar object in his larger displays. He calls it a sign of hope and joy in the darkness.

Author Commentary

Names shnames
I decided Brian was Loren's brother after I'd introduced them. The post-military name change was a way to give reason to their mismatched names, but ultimately gave him a much more interesting character arc.
Alpha Brian
One of the player characters - Jareth - had an unrequited crush on Brian. Jareth bought one of his spiky plants and named it Brian 2 (and later used it as a weapon). Giving potential love interests Brian-adjacent names became a running joke, including a Brian 3 on Torm and a Brianna on Talmar. In the end, this is how Bry got his name.

Connections

Much of Brian's post-war recovery has focused on re-learning who he is and how to interact with others. With support from doctors and family, he's been able to manage his once-overwhelming guilt and anger to instead develop a calm and thoughtful demeanor. He prefers smaller gatherings and avoids alcohol and other substances that can affect his mood or impair his self-control. He rarely uses telepathy anymore, but remains skilled at luring information out of people through casual conversation.   His quiet nature and muscular frame make him intimidating to some, especially if they've seen him shut down someone who dared cross certain unyielding boundaries, but his typical behavior is more mischievous than aggressive. Once he knows someone well enough, he knows what sort of teasing they'll enjoy, and will revel in playful prods and occasional pranks. And no, he doesn't think he'll ever be too old for such things.

Professional

Brian has working relationships with many Devalian gardeners, as well as with sculptors and other artists whose work he may include in his designs. He's also gained contacts through his support of anti-work, pro-peace, and pro-reparation groups, and is rumored to be in talks for a possible collaboration with the Vantas Company Fashion Show.   However, though Brian has never acted against veteran or post-war support groups, he's also never done anything for them. This combined with his anti-war stance has been enough for several groups to blacklist him and individuals to boycott anything featuring his work. Brian rarely gives public statements on these acts. If he's bothered at all, he reserves such thoughts for those he trusts most.
People shouldn't buy what they don't want. Especially if it's something living.
— Brian's public opinion on the boycotts

Social

Brian's social circle has gotten smaller over the years as he's chosen to focus his time on those who mean the most to him. While on Devali, he spends most of his time with his husband with regular trips to see his mother. Since selling the family vineyard, she's moved closer to Abraia Central and has become a bit of a socialite.
Loren Codac (sister)
Though often at odds as children, the siblings are now each other's biggest supporters. Loren's work keeps her off planet, but they still correspond frequently.
Vantas Vohn
Brian entertains occasional luncheons with the executive. Despite their past conflicts, they both have lost family to the same degenerative disease.
Night Knights
After their misadventures in 3208, Brian counts the original Night Knights among his friends. He visits them on the rare occasions when schedules and travel line up.

Planets

Brian prefers to stay on Devali where his husband and mother are, but he does travel to other planets for work a couple times a year. He's been hired to most planets in the sector, including Kuwei.
Devali
His home will always be in Abraia. He's taken commissions in the Monhalian Union, but despite attempts to distance himself from it, his role in the war leaves him feeling uncomfortable in the southern country.
Talmar
The only planet Brian will vacation to, and bring his husband. Not only does he know people on the planet, but it's also unlikely anyone there will want to hire him, making it the perfect break from work.

Night Knights

In 3208, the Unchained Armada sent the Night Knights to Devali to resolve issues regarding a potential trade deal for Mirasoil. Brian's sister, Loren, was morally opposed to the deal due to the health risks around handling mirasoil. The Night Knights were meant to resolve that conflict, by force if necessary. Brian got involved by looking out for his sister.   The Night Knight's diplomatic solution was to have Loren join the Armada as biochemist and subject matter expert, allowing her to oversee safe handling and education. Brian, wanting to look out for his sister, was able to secure a position with the mercenary organization as an intelligence officer.   Their new work had them relocate to Talmar, where the Armada was based. While there, Loren and other Armada scientists were taken hostage by an extremist cell of the local milita group. Brian was taken prisoner along with them. He was able to break free of his holding cell, and with help from the Night Knights, rescued his sister.   The two left Talmar shortly before the Battle for Talmar and ended their employment with the Armada. While Brian returned to his work on Devali, Loren followed former-Night Knight Tag Dodgestein to the Syndicate.

In the News

Various magazines and newspapers have featured articles on Brian, his work, or his activism throughout the years. Mainstream Abraian publications often struggle to cover him in a way that's respectful without alienating readers who might find his art or ideals "controversial". This article from True Class demonstrates the start of such companies grappling with the conflict.

I just got the pun in the Night Knights' name for some reason whilst reading this.   Also, I have one of Brian's potted plants thanks to my backstop and I am absolutely thrilled.   He is a fascinating character to read about and has given me a new appreciation of the name Brian.
