Maxim is thrust into the world, and the heavens shake with portent.
Following the "Administrative Flunky's" tracks to the Tsukijō Wakigami Manor, the generals find that it has already been taken by Igamono. They enter the building's basement cautiously, and are confronted by a man who looks and sounds exactly like Katsusada Shishauezaemon. When questioned by the real Shishauezaemon, the impostor claims that he already spoke to the envoy from the Imperial Court. Among other misinformation, Matsutada Tadamatsu was told that the Hashinara attacked the Chōsokabe Clan on a personal slight, and that the Ashikaga Shogunate should mind its own business on threat of war. Before the discussion could progress any further, Fujibayashi Nagato attacked the impostor from the shadows and a full battle broke out between Hashinara elite and the lurking Igamono. Among their top priorities was the rescue of Tsukijō no Yumeno, tied to a post in the middle of the cellar, but this too was revealed to be a ninja fake. She was slain with the rest, but in the chaos, a single Igamono managed to cut off the real Katsusada Shishauezaemon's head. With the enigmatic words, "Vengeance has been served," the man accepted his death at the others' hands. As panic spread, Chōsokabe Morichika stole Matsumoto Ooawagaeri out of the chaos. With a few quick words, however, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was able to regain control of the situation, and the Igamono suffered a brutal defeat. After the battle, the real Tsukijō no Yumeno was found in a nearby barrel. She was unharmed, merely tied up, and corroborated the story that the fake Shishauezaemon had told them before.
During the final stages of the Hashinara conquest of The Palace of the Firebird, Knight Commander Maxim encounters the physical incarnation of Bishamonten. Though Maxim himself pays little heed to the meeting, Bishamonten senses the touch of a Demon upon his soul, and so attacks without hesitation. Though Maxim is able to withstand an impressive seven attacks from the deity's Seven Jeweled Swords, he is obliterated by a final psychic assault before he is able to act in response. Those present witness Maxim's soul seized by chains that rise unbidden from the ground and drag his essence violently below.
Maxim awakens after an interminable amount of time to find that his soul has been placed into a near-perfect recreation of his body. He seem to be in a silken boudoir, but the Demonic appearances of the women around him leads him to the conclusion that he has been dragged to hell. Gehenna, specifically. Maxim's suspicions are confirmed as he is forced into an audience with Ira Sathana, a powerful Archdemon with whom he formed a contract during the battle for The Palace of the Firebird. This embodiment of Wrath offers Maxim a second chance at life in the mortal world, should he agree to enact her will alongside pursuit of his own objectives. With a physical contract set before him, writ in blood and listing a series of names, Maxim agrees and signs his own, thus pledging himself to Sathana's work.
Before Maxim begins his journey back to the mortal world, Ira Sathana commands him to choose a companion from among the three Duchesses of Wrath who accompany her. This demonic ally will both guide him out of Gehenna and ensure that he remains loyal to Sathana's interests upon regaining the human world. His three choices are: Vepar, the Unholy Admiral who offers him eternal, unbearable agony; Haures, the White Flame, a demon who slays demons; and Andras, who kills the master, the servant, and the assistant. The final demon present, Rofocale reveals herself to be once a denizen of Pride who harbors a deep enough grudge to turn her to Wrath instead. She is something like Sathana's secretary, and thus not up for choosing. After some deliberation, and interviewing the candidates, Maxim almost chooses Andras, eager to have her thirty legions of aerial demons at his back. She seems to be the least interested in accompanying him, however, so he eventually decides on the much more eager Haures, who also has the advantage of passing as a Japanese Bakeneko. This choice made, Maxim is sent to cross the wastes of Sheol and pass into Jigoku where he will find another passage to Earth.
Whilst crossing the endless plains of Sheol with his demonic guide Haures, Maxim unexpectedly finds himself again in the company of Kashirin. It seems that the Binbōgami never truly returned to Earth after her role in the battle with Mammon, but instead sensed Maxim somewhere in Gehenna. She begins haunting him again as his shadow, drinking of his fortune, just like old times.
As he crosses the grey plains of Sheol with Haures and Kashirin, Maxim comes across a solitary tree in the otherwise barren landscape. Haures informs him that the tree is a hallmark of Sitri, a powerful demon of Lust. The two decide to skirt the tree and avoid a confrontation, but every path seems to lead them back to it. Eventually they resign themselves to approaching it. Sitri is as scantily-clad as one would expect from a demoness of Lust, and offers to annul Maxim's contract with Wrath if he will accept freedom of the body and dally with her. With a single touch, she causes his armor to fall to the ground, but Maxim is unmoved by her advances. He rebuffs her offer, and merely presses onward, much to his companions' approval. Though no doubt powerful in her own right, Sitri appears wary of Haures, and so does not press the issue further. She vanishes in a veil of black smoke, and her tree is soon lost on the horizon as they proceed deeper into hell.
As Maxim, Haures, and Kashirin near the edges of Jigoku, their journey is interrupted by the approach of another archdemon, this one with legions of followers in his wake. Kimaris, a warrior of Pride for whose prowess many lesser demons are named, leaves his army at a respectful distance and approaches Maxim's group alone. Although it seems at first that the lion-maned knight will challenge Maxim, he quickly loses interest when it becomes obvious that his intended prey has only armor, and not a weapon with which to defend himself. Instead, Kimaris offers a trade. He will furnish Maxim with a weapon and shield from his own armory. In return, Haures must meet him and his legions in battle after she finishes her visit to Earth. Haures agrees and Maxim is furnished with a lion-hilted sword and lion-crested shield from the archdemon's own stock before they part ways.
As Maxim, Haures, and Kashirin finally enter Jigoku, they make note of the numerous rusty, abandoned torture devices and unused pools of lava about the place. Haures remarks that this used to be a place designed for the torture of sinners from Earth, but that Vepar's methods were much more elegant than what is on display here. Before they can advance much further, Maxim finds himself transported to an opulent meeting chamber and faced with a massive, portly, fearsome man with crown and stake. Great King Enma demands to know what Maxim is doing in his realm, but the observant knight instead notices a curtain at the back of the room and investigates. The terrible Judge of Hell is revealed to be an illusion, and the real Enma is naught more than a slight girlish figure behind the curtain. Her secret revealed, Enma reveals that she has been weakened greatly by Izanami-no-Mikoto's monopoly on souls from Japan. Even the Oni who once served her have abandoned Jigoku for Mount Ōe above. Sympathetic to her plight, Maxim agrees to bring Enma enough souls to restore her to a semblance of her true power, in exchange for safe passage to the human world above. The Once-Great King agrees, and Maxim is returned to his companions, who have been wandering lost in his absence. Immediately they come upon a tunnel leading upward and into the human world once again.
At the crest of the tunnel from Jigoku, Maxim and company enter into a cavern somewhere in the depths of Mount Ōe, on Earth once again. They are not alone here, however. An immense, flaming being in the shape of humanoid flame is chained to each side of the walls. In a voice like the crash of stone, it exhorts Maxim to release it. When questioned about what it will do once free, it answers only in slaughter. Before the dark conversation can continue, Shuten-dōji arrives in the chamber and demands that Maxim leave. Once he learns that the foreigner and his companions have not come with ill intent, his demeanor changes, and the ancient oni instead invites them to share in his dinner. Maxim agrees, hoping to request transport to the upcoming tournament at Shimonoseki and his first target in the mortal world.
In the company of Shuten-dōji, Maxim and Haures are led to the surface of Mount Ōe and into The Eternal Feast. Unbeknownst to their hosts, Kashirin follows as well. The three enjoy a hearty meal of meat and soup while Maxim explains his circumstances and desire to reach Shimonoseki in time for the tournament. During the conversation, some of Shuten-dōji's own story comes to the fore, and he explains that while he once was a brutal fighter seeking nothing more than blood and battle, he's settled down in his old age. Though the ancient oni does not explicitly say such, it seems as though the Avatar of Slaughter Maxim encountered before has something to do with this. As the feast continues, Shuten-dōji explains that he himself cannot transport Maxim to the west in time for the tournament, but @Myoroguma-dōji who lives further up the mountain should be able to. Excusing himself with the other's blessing, Maxim begins his climb.
With a torch in hand and leaving Haures behind at the feast hall, Maxim begins his climb toward the summit of Mount Ōe. Soon he's enveloped completely in a thick mist, and an ethereal voice commands him to be ready for a trial. Upon announcing that he's been sent by Shuten-dōji to meet with Myoroguma-dōji, however, the fog immediately clears and he's welcomed into a humble dwelling built into the mountain's cliffs. Myōroguma explains that he rarely has visitors himself, with everyone wanting instead to climb to the top of the mountain and challenge the master at the peak. Maxim finds himself drawn to the wan Oni, and Myōroguma agrees to send him to Shimonoseki whenever he'd like. In the meantime, they play a few games of Go and enjoy a relaxing time away from the chaos in the rest of the country.
Having been sent on an errand by his new friend Myoroguma-dōji to retrieve food from The Eternal Feast below, Maxim is briefly distracted by flashes of magic and the sounds of battle from somewhere lower on Mount Ōe. Descending to investigate, he witnesses a masked girl, no doubt Hashinara Yoshitakatomo doing battle with Oni ghosts in a graveyard basin at midnight. The princess-daimyō's companion, Kubokuma-dōnyo, notices him in turn, but does not recognize the foreigner without his imposing armor and helmet. Maxim decides not to reveal himself to Yoshitakatomo just yet, and instead merely returns to his errand, bringing a tray of meaty delights back up to Myoroguma's cave.
Maxim returns to Myoroguma-dōji's company with food in hand, and the two agree that there's no rush in sending him and companions off to Shimonoseki. They decide to rest and chat at least until the dawn. The night drags on for an interminable amount of time. Even though Maxim spent much of his evening in Gehenna, it still seems as though the sun should have risen long ago. Eventually, after many games of Go and the forging of a common bond, the sun does indeed rise and the new day begins. With Myoroguma's regards, Maxim, Haures, and Kashirin are all teleported by the Oni Warden's magic to Shimonoseki in time for the beginning of the tournament.
After associating with Katatada Denzaemon for his revisited tour of Wakigami Castle, Maxim probes for any unresolved thirst for vengeance in the ashigaru. At the suggestion, Denzaemon speaks eagerly, if esoterically, about Hokku Kamui, a White Wolf God who slayed his companions. Before Denzaemon could gather power and exact vengeance, however, Hokku Kamui fled by trading the flesh of his flank for a new vessel to reside in. He now seeks the White Wolf's new body to fulfill his final revenge.
In their search for a powerful summoner to bind Honda Tadakatsu, Maxim and Haures meet with Abe no Seimei in Ōtsu Castle. Intrigued by Haures' exotic nature, Seimei first requests information in recompense for her assistance. Maxim's suggestion of aiding her in a personal vengeance, however, piques her interest. Seimei agrees to help if the Commander of the Wolfpack and his demon can find and bring Ashiya Dōman low before her, but she cannot guarantee the man is even still alive. She's careful to make clear that, should they fail, she will ask for another form of payment in vengeance's place. With the summoning circle in Seimei's lab posing a threat to Haures, the three and Katatada Denzaemon agree to move upward into a meeting room in the castle to continue their discussion. Once there, Haures outlines the steps that must be taken to seal a demon, while Seimei confirms that she will be available to perform the binding once Maxim is ready, though more advance warning is better. She goes on to describe Maxim's target in return, Ashiya Dōman. Charming and handsome in his own way, according to her memory, though stout of build and with a receding hairline. He was last seen at the capital in Echizen, but truly could be anywhere now. Before the meeting concludes, Maxim thinks to ask about Hokku Kamui, and receives a surprising answer. Despite what Hashinara Yoshitakatomo had told him, the White Thunder had apparently been seen within the past decade. What's more, he was slain and a meal made of him by Aotsuki Tsukamoto's castle chef, Isaki Annette. Bewildered, and under the weight of Denzaemon's dark monologue, Maxim requests to meet with Annette. Seimei agrees, and says that Abura Akago will guide him to the kitchen.
Following his meeting with Abe no Seimei, Maxim is granted an oily guide to lead him down to the kitchens where he might find Isaki Annette and a clue to the legend of Hokku Kamui. After a bit of bewilderment over Abura Akago, Maxim, Haures, and Katatada Denzaemon are led to the lower levels of Ōtsu Castle and eventually to the steaming kitchens. Annette is there, in her element, and offers Maxim a dragontail dumpling on his arrival. The stoic knight accepts the dumpling but does not eat it, and asks her directly about Hokku Kamui. The cook is blunt in her answer, affirming that she killed him for the meat of his flank. What's more, she recognizes Katatada Denzaemon. With a bit more prying, and Denzaemon's approval, Annette ousts him as Hokku Kamui himself, or the vessel that she helped the White Thunder's soul inhabit. It comes to be revealed that over the long centuries, Hokku Kamui lost track of whether he was the White Thunder or the man he had wronged. Perhaps becoming human had granted him a conscience, or perhaps there was something left of his host's body in him. Regardless, Katatada Denzaemon's desired vengeance is against... himself. He opens his arms wide and asks Maxim to strike him down. Maxim hesitates, not willing to kill an unarmed opponent, but Haures answers by lighting an infernal fire in the man's lungs, bringing Katatada Denzaemon to the ground. Finally, Maxim delivers the killing blow, but is almost overwhelmed by the Kamui's spirit. After an intervention from Annette's frying pan, he's brought back into this world, and the White Thunder's soul finds refuge in his sword. The hilt of the weapon, which once bore the crest of a lion, now shows an ivory wolf. Haures is begrudgingly set to cleaning up the mess in Annette's kitchen, and Maxim departs with Denzaemon's body to bury him in the castle gardens.
As if drawn into a dream against their own volition, in a time and space not quite connected with what they know as reality, the heroes of the Hashinara Clan found themselves in a wasteland. Here, they were pitted against Deathlord☠Troxiom, a monstrous evil general in the midst of a ritual that would make him unstoppable. Alongside them was Date Masamune [Hero]. Queerer still for Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, he found himself to be Masamune, with his body only nominally under his own control and his mouth speaking words he did not intend. Together they battled against Troxiom in an attempt to rescue Katakura Kojūrō [Damsel], but their attacks had little effect on the bone-armored titan at the height of his power. Date Masamune (Hero) summoned his companions to the fight, his weapons glowing bright, but they did not heed his call. It was Ryūzaki Sanosuke's clever idea to write with a conjured pen on the story-scrawling scroll in the background, albeit with little effect. Maxim held the line and traded blows with Troxiom, but could not fell him. Aotsuki Tsukamoto called upon his companion Kagami to pelt their adversary with spheres of light, weak as they were. Still, such setbacks mattered little in the face of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo's incredible magic prowess. With an unseen grasp of mystic power, she* took the story scroll's magic for her* own, and became the effective god of this corner of The Dreamlands. Even by Yoshitakatomo's hand, the battle continued for some time. At the end, Deathlord☠Troxiom lay broken upon the ground. Date Masamune (Hero) was victorious, thanks to his stalwart companions, and Katakura Kojūrō (Damsel) was saved. With the threat gone, the dream dissolved, and our heroes were sent victorious back to the present world. Richer, perhaps, than when they entered, and with the clout of heroism to buoy them through the difficult times ahead. Indeed, it seems that Maxim took something more substantial with him, as the Deathlord's magnificent weapon, the Deathlord Buster, followed him into the waking world.
Maxim retires to the Ōtsu Castle gardens to bury Katatada Denzaemon's body, but is interrupted by Kiinushii, who demands to know what he's doing in the greenery. Surprisingly, Maxim manages to placate her with talk of fairies from his homeland of Albion. She shows him a place to bury the body to fertilize the budding flowers, and the two talk as Maxim gets his hands dirty. Both Maxim and Kiinushii seem to have a disconnect with humans, having trouble understanding the thoughts and emotions that drive them. Perhaps this is their common ground. Maxim promises to bring a Fairy at some point in the future if he can, to sate the Kodama's curiosity. Eventually, the job is done, and the knight commander takes his leave. Kiinushii bids him not to forget his promise as he returns to the depths of the castle and waiting Haures.
Investigating reports from Juntoku no Chūkyō regarding a mysterious merchant in Awa Harbor, the five generals of the Hashinara clan quickly found the racketeer in question. Clad from toe to tip in black cloth, with a white mask under his hat, the merchant spoke with a strange, grinding voice and moved with jerky twitches. For all this, he seemed friendly enough, and explained that he was selling poor-quality swords, failures, in bulk. Though these weapons were anything but poor-quality, Fubuki recognized them as being crafted by the same legendary smith notorious for making "Cursed" weapons. Not wanting any more of these blades distributed to the public, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo bought the whole cart, only to have another cart wheel itself out of the house behind the merchant, full to the brim with more blades. With the help of his Sheele, Aotsuki Tsukamoto recognized gears beneath the cart's wheels as the source of its self-locomotion. Karakuri, according to Yoshitakatomo, a kind of trick clockwork popular among the richer classes for entertainment. Meanwhile, Fubuki had transmuted into a tiny fox and stolen into the house. Inside were four more copies of the same merchant. Further inspection showed them to be more wood and gears under their robes than humans. Before Fubuki's investigation could continue, it was interrupted by a shower of bombs with various coy expressions painted on them from the rafters above. First a flashbang, then three smoke grenades that masked the disappearance of the merchants within. By this point, Maxim had burst through the door and was attempting to save the man he saw inside, but with little luck. A few moments and a powerful breath from Sanosuke dispelled the smoke, but the clockwork men were nowhere to be seen. Outside, Kagami pointed out that she'd seen a person on the roof, and Tama found a discharged bomb with a sullen face drawn on it. At the same time, the first merchant had suddenly changed its tune, confirming that yes, Yoshitakatomo actually could meet the smith behind those fine weapons. Fubuki teleported beneath the floor-boards, while Maxim followed by use of a trapdoor Sanosuke had pointed out during an investigation of the interior. Transforming her*self into a hat, Fubuki rested on one of the marching merchant's heads as they progressed through a tunnel until reaching a stone room with more carts of weapons. Also present, watching over them, was a mysterious creature comprising a cloak tapering to blades at the end and a mass of vaguely humanoid red ribbons under a death-marked mask. The Blade Wraith immediately spotted Fubuki even through the disguise and, while she* fought valiantly for a hat, the four "merchants" and creature were able to slay her* in short order. Before falling, Fubuki had sent a message to Yoshitakatomo covering the situation and the princess-daimyō was about to make her* own magical entrance just as Maxim reached the door. Both were too late to save Fubuki, but perhaps she* can still be rescued from true death if they act quickly enough. Standing in their way, though, were the Blade Wraith and four karakuri merchants, now revealed to be hideous clockwork dolls under the guise.
Moments after the death of Fubuki (in hat form), Hashinara Yoshitakatomo teleports the remainder of the party into the shadows of the cavern below. They arrive at the same time as Maxim, who departed first on foot. Although Yoshitakatomo has used a large amount of energy transporting the group, especially Kagami and Tama who are technically artifacts, the group wastes no time in engaging the mottled group of mechanical dolls. Despite its fearsome showing before, the Blade Wraith falls immediately to a single swing from Ryūzaki Sanosuke. While Maxim and Sanosuke engage the remaining mechanical men in combat, Aotsuki Tsukamoto instead attempts to retrieve Fubuki. Aided by the unseen hand of Munechika, he succeeds, and calls upon Amaterasu's light to bring the deceased hat back to life. Though difficult to damage and incredibly deadly, the karakuri men are no match for Sanosuke. Soon, each is reduced to a heap on the ground except for one, whose limbs Yoshitakatomo fuses to its sides to take captive for study. Following up on an unmooring sound called out by Kagami only moments before, the warriors rush through the back of the cave and outside to a small pier. A boat was here, but through the use of karakuri trickery and possibly magic, it has vanished at speed. Even the vessel's trail stops abruptly at a certain point in the water. Whomever was here and leading these creatures, presumably the same individual with the expressive bombs, has made their escape. However, the battle was not without its gains. The Cardinal Generals now find themselves in possession of upwards of six hundred quality, possibly cursed, katana. What's more, Maxim somehow regains his two-handed sword. How could that have gotten here? It will probably remain a mystery. Taking their captive, Yoshitakatomo discovers a final clue engraved into its body. "学天即". Something like "learning from the laws of nature". A maker's mark? Perhaps this, and the now-absent original merchant's promise to deliver swords to Wakigami Castle, may yet lead to the karakuri puppetmaster behind this whole fiasco.
Following his strange experience with Katatada Denzaemon, Maxim voices to Haures that he'd like to move to a secluded place for his next plans. He offers her the chance to stay, but she insists on keeping an eye on him, so the two follow Abura Akago to the castle gate. Unfortunately, the gate she takes them to is in the basement, and leads to the waterways beneath the castle. Undaunted, Maxim presses forward into the waterway. Despite Haures' complaints, the two slosh forward through the thigh-high water until coming to a cavern with signs of recent occupation. A urn half-full of rotted fish is quickly found to be the culprit behind a terrible scent that permeates the area, and Maxim's investigation also uncovers a glowing crystal for light and a small campsite with a mildewed bedroll. The tunnel continues on, but dips underwater, so Maxim decides that this is as good a place as any. Dropping to the ground, he assumes a meditative position. Commanding Haures to watch, the Knight Commander begins to focus his energy and establish greater control over Hostimentum: Wrath Plate, the armor flitting in and out of existence around his seated form.

Coming out of his meditative state, Maxim felt the fruits of his efforts. He had attained a greater level of influence over Hostimentum, the infernal armor that sometimes girded his form. He could not yet say, however, that it would produce any concrete effects in battle. Haures was sitting nearby, staring at the wall placidly, but that was not what had disturbed his rest. From the intermittent splashing in the entry tunnel and the looming sense of resentment that washed over him, someone dangerous was approaching.
Following his underground meeting with a dangerous "Shogun," Maxim returned from the waterways of Ōtsu Castle and sought out Aotsuki Tsukamoto for a meeting and transportation to the day's tournament in Shimonoseki. Things were not to be that simple, however. After wandering a few halls, the swordsman was hailed by none other that Watagyūma-dōnyo, a notorious trickster and malcontent somehow still free to move around the castle. At the same time, Aotsuki was rising with his wife Tokku-hime in the castle beneath Lake Biwa. In the shimmering morning light, the two discussed their dreams of the previous night. Aotsuki was surprised to find that Tokku had apparently dreamed of Ryūgūjō, a castle beneath the sea that he had visited once upon a journey. As a sacred place with a strong connection to Dragons, it seemed unlikely that her vision was unconnected to the events of the previous day.
The second day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament arrived, with festivites starting early in the morning. Special considerations had been made for the Hashinara Clan this time, with their official box expanded enough to seat a multitude of generals. From Mōri Motonari's subtle glance, Ryūzaki Sanosuke gathered that this gesture may have been made largely for him. It made sense, given the sheer number of generals he had brought once again. A fair number of other events occurred simulatenously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 2
Watching the morning battles unfold, Knight Commander Maxim was largely unaware of the faceless, maid-like creature slowly approaching him through the crowds. Aotsuki Tsukamoto, or more notably Kagami was more alert, and spotted the interloper before she arrived. Looking through Kagami's legendary mirror, Aotsuki spotted a previously-hidden Gashadokuro lounging on the eaves behind Hōjō Ujiteru. And, while that was frightening enough, the creature approaching Maxim registered in the mirror not as a featureless maid, but rather as a four-legged creature akin to a stag, covered in bloody red pools and eyes alike. Shaken, Aotsuki sent a mental warning to Maxim as his admirer finally drew close enough to speak.
No sooner had Fubuki magicked the sword binding Kashirin away than yet another strange event interrupted the ill-fated Mōri tournament. The more keen-eared of those in the crowd noticed it first, and brought it to the attention of their allies. A low, whistling sound was steadily growing in volume as something approached the stadium at high speed. It was not Kashirin's prisonous sword, but rather a black spear shooting down from the heavens directly at Maxim.
Whilst Maxim chatted with "Paseguru Kamui," Aotsuki Tsukamoto and his sheele, Kagami, had noticed something. In the shadow of the Knight Commander's considerable form, a dark presence had just ducked out of sight. Judging from the misfortune that had just then taken place in the arena as well, that could only be the Binbōgami Kashirin. Still wary of the dark spirit, Aotsuki wasted no time in mentally informing Ryūzaki Sanosuke.
With the independent matches of the day concluded, Mōri Motonari called for a break in the tournament to allow everyone present to visit Shimonoseki, have lunch, and attend to any other business before the clan matches in the afternoon. Maxim took this opportunity to make his way to the entrance leading down into the depths of the arena. With current events as they were, an Onizamurai had been stationed to guard this portal, but Maxim's desire to see to the safety of Tsukahara Bokuden was not to be cowed. Grabbing Bakin and Kinba, he brought them with, thinking that they would like to see Kiban as well.
In Setsu Province, villagers, cityfolk, and bakeneko alike have been complaining of strange dreams. The legend of Momotarō plays out before their eyes every night, albeit with a unique spin. In this rendition, "Magical Momo" is an idol, and she defeats the evil oni with her cheerful antics and cute companions. Could this spectacle just be residual thoughts from that idol competition in Wakigami? That wouldn't explain why farmers who have never seen an "idol" in their lives are having the same dreams too. It's been a while since the Gauntlet of Games, where the Date Clan implored their counterparts in the Hashinara to investigate these "dream shards" popping up all over the country. Likely it's in response to the big portal up north near their capital. Regardless, the brave generals of the Hashinara were getting around to it, and their next target was that peach-colored rift halfway between Kaya and Osaka(settlement).
At a point where he was free of the other trappings of the tournament festival, Maxim was approached by a small oni boy with a letter. The messenger, one Kita Narikatsu, was none too pleased at having his time interrupted for such an errand, and even went so far as to stick his tongue out at Maxim as he left. Unruffled, the knight commander opened up his letter, and found a message written in his native tongue.
With the sheer shock from seeing Akechi Mitsuhides soul devoured lessening, Mōri Motonari found the presence of mind to call the day’s activities to an end. She explained once again that board and accommodations would be prepared for those who wished it, and that some light entertainment would be held in the arena until the day’s evening.
Post-tournament, as the crowds began to leave the Mōri arena in Shimonoseki, several Hashinara generals, too, found interests elsewhere to pursue. Aotsuki Tsukamoto traveled to Mino Province with Saitō Dōsan to handle the leftovers from some of his previous days’ adventures. As well, Ryūzaki Sanosuke returned to Wakigami upon the request of Tōdaisen Nobuhara, to help him clean up a mess that had sprouted up in the generals’ absence. That left Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Maxim in the dwindling crowds.
When Akashi Kengyō departed, he left Maxim and Ikeda Tsuneoki face to face and blade to blade. Invoking his knightly honor, Maxim offered his opponent one last chance to put down his weapons and surrender. Tsuneoki, however, was too wrapped up in his vengeance, pinning all of the injustices he had faced on the Hashinara Clan and refusing to back down. There could be no other outcome. Maxim challenged Tsuneoki to a duel.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Saitō Dōsan were among the first to arrive in the meeting chamber of Owari Castle that had been set aside for their purposes. Maxim, too, was in attendance, and soon Hashinara Yoshitakatomo arrived with an unknown stranger in her* company. The opposite side of the wide, low table was filled with the Oda Clan’s greatest remaining representatives. Oichi took the head, her position cemented by her relationship to Oda Nobunaga, previous Daimyō of the clan. Beside her stood Shibata Katsuie, her bodyguard and a proponent of this meeting. Then, along the side were Ishida Mitsunari, Azai Nagamasa, and Mori Ranmaru. Only Nagamasa’s presence between the two others seemed to be preventing them from attacking each other right there. Petty complaints and snappish insults were tossed about above the weary-looking Azai Daimyō’s head.
While the invading demon, Raym, lurked beneath the meeting room table, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo took the opportunity to cast a minor spell of healing upon the fallen. This jolted them awake, mending some of their wounds, but Azai Nagamasa was still missing an arm and Ishida Mitsunari a leg, so they were yet in no condition to rejoin the battle. Even Kagami's supernatural powers of detection couldn't pinpoint their attacker's location, save that she was somewhere under the table, so Ryūzaki Sanosuke took the most obvious route forward. Slamming his foot down in a precise, powerful strike, he exerted just enough force to snap all four legs of the table and bring it down heavily onto the floor below. So measured was his strength that those standing on the table barely had to adjust their balance. Even so, the heavy wooden slab didn't seem to meet any resistance on the way down. Either Raym was no longer down there, or her powers of shadow extended further than they knew.
Once the meeting had fully ended and Aotsuki Tsukamoto's mercenary business handled, he was free to return to Ōtsu Castle for his remaining evening plans. A strange castle, appearing only at night and apparently altering the memories of everyone under a certain threshold of power... Well, that was not something he could very well ignore. His adviser, Abe no Seimei, suggested that Maxim come along as well, and the two found her in the main hall of Ōtsu already wearing traveling gear. For a bit of extra protection, Aotsuki invited Ka-ten Agni and Sugihara Hidemitsu to come as well, but wisely kept his diplomatic party to this limited size.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto stood in a dimly lit passageway somewhere within Kannonji Castle. That strange, one-horned oni-yōkai girl had brought him here, and locked him within, but thanks to the efforts of Kagami and Tama, he had been able to escape. His allies, Abe no Seimei, Maxim, Ka-ten Agni, and Sugihara Hidemitsu, were all still outside the firmly-shut castle gate. Though he could communicate with them mentally, that left him alone to figure out a way to escape. Hoping to avoid another encounter with Rokkaku no Ateshi, Aotsuki moved first to his right. It was harder to tell after his whirlwind entrance to the place, but if he had to guess, he’d say he was heading east. Late as it was, most of the castle had retired, and none remained in the corridor to challenge him. He tried to muffle the sounds of his clanking equipment, and succeeded about as far as could be hoped for a man carrying such armor and weaponry.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto was running out of questions to ask, and he wasn't much closer to figuring out the mystery behind Shōtei and the mysterious nightly reappearance of Kannonji Castle. There was one thing still bothering him, however: the mochi dish. Aotsuki had heard it mentioned more than once now, and had even seen the shadow of a yōkai carrying it away during his impromptu sojourn into the castle. What significance could it hold?
With the aid of Shigeaki Fujino, a group consisting of Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Maxim arrived in Takayama Tomoteru's room at Owari Castle just in time to interrupt a strategic meeting between Takenaka Hanbei and Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. There had been whispers of a great meeting between the Hashinara Clan's top generals for some time now, especially with Maxim's sudden return from Gehenna. Fujino had taken it upon herself to make it happen, and so it was. Abe no Seimei offered some brief telepathic objections at the stealing away of Aotsuki, but he was able to reassure her, and the meeting could begin.
Lord Maxim's initial refusal to go to war on the side of the Takeda surprised Takenaka Hanbei. She voiced as much, suggesting that it was strange he would not want to wage battle against a god, particularly one he had as much to begrudge as Bishamonten. Maxim soon clarified that he would be willing to lend his aid in the coming battle, but it was a risk almost on par with what he had encountered in the Palace of the Firebird. As such, he needed more payment than just honor and good service to make it worth risking his men. In exchange for a large number of souls, quality notwithstanding, he would agree fight both the Uesugi and Izanami.
The summoning of Shax completed, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and her* generals, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Maxim, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke, were all left in the basement of Ōtsu Castle, Abe no Seimei’s sanctum. Their new, demonic guest was now under control, and so they were free to pursue other matters. A few things in particular seemed to be on Sanosuke’s mind, and he began by pursuing the idea of a sheele.
It was just after midnight in the basements of Ōtsu Castle and many a scattered gathering was coming to an end. Knight Commander Maxim, who had just been blessed with a new sheele, thanked Abe no Seimei before returning to the main sanctum. There, he introduced Evaine to Aotsuki Tsukamoto and company as his squire. What followed was a minor spectacle as Kagami wondered secretly why she was so small in comparison to Evaine, Tama, and even Rasaimoku. Aotsuki tried to explain that the reason was in Maxim's own bigness. It was only reasonable that he'd have a big sheele to match. This, however, only led to the little mirror asking Maxim how he managed to grow so large.
When Knight Commander Maxim arrived at Ago Manor, someone had already sent word ahead. It was probably Shigeaki Fujino's doing, but Tsunawara Mishiko was there waiting despite the late hour, ready to perform her duties as the Manor Lord's only retainer of note. With administrative precision, each member of Maximum Force was assigned a room and led to them in order. Once this was done, Mishiko returned to Maxim and tersely informed him that there were just enough rooms for these new recruits. If he wanted anyone else to stay on, he'd have to make his own arrangements.
While the other generals of the Hashinara Clan were busy with their own pursuits, Knight Commander Maxim had taken some time to chat with some of his close allies* in Ago Manor. At the moment, this was only his misfortunate shadow, Kashirin, and Haures, who was equal parts aide and overseer. While Maxim and his demonic watcher seemed to possess similar goals, they had not been getting along well of late. In their current discussion, Maxim had just brought up the possibility of Andras, another archdemon of Wrath, lending her forces to the upcoming battle against the Uesugi Clan. Encouraged by Haures' favorable response, he continued by asking what, if anything, he'd need to do in order to bring the other into this world.
After his keeper stalked off further into Ago Manor, Maxim decided that he did, indeed, feel a little bad about how that encounter with Haures had ended. Thinking back on it, he realized that she'd been offended not just by his words, but his teasing and attempts to give her orders. A Wrath Demon she may be, but Haures was also among the most prideful of those he had met. Fitting for a lioness. Following Haures' path back into the shadowed hallways, Maxim was surprised to find her loitering just around the next corner. It seemed the other had not left entirely, but merely skulked away out of view. Unconscious or uncaring of all that he'd just realized, Maxim proceeded to give the lioness another set of orders. He was going to Mount Ōe, he proclaimed, to meet a certain Oni, and Haures was coming with him. The demoness obviously chafed under this new declaration, but she accompanied him without complaint. The Oni were demons of a sort, Haures mentioned, and their assistance might well be helpful to both their goals. With a final command to Kashirin to stay in Ago, Maxim hailed Shigeaki Fujino and they were off.
Dawn threatened to break in the eastern sky, so Maxim bid farewell to his Warden friend and descended Mount Ōe's misty slopes. He didn't have to look for for Haures, who appeared to be waiting for him. She seemed to have avoided getting sauce on her sleeves this time and was engaged in tearing the last chunks of meat from a bone of near-comical proportions. Maxim recalled seeing a swarthy, burly oni man approaching her as he left, but judging by Haures' sly comments and a scorched patch of ground, he wouldn't be a problem. Without subtlety, the lioness suggested that Maxim should be a the tournament at dawn, since both Honda Tadakatsu and Mōri Motonari would be present as well. He agreed, but opted to first return to Ago Manor and gather a few more allies, just in case.
Dawn rose on the third day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament, with the matches beginning at their characteristically punctual break of dawn. Mostly familiar faces dotted the crowd, with some missing and a few newcomers present. Of particular interest was a sour-faced, dour woman in reddish robes sharing the box right beside Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki who hadn't been there on days previous. A fair number of other events occurred simultaneously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 3
The last match to grace the flower-littered sands of the arena had been "refreshingly simple," but things were about to take a dark turn. Knight Commander Maxim, leader of The Wolfpack mercenary organization took to the field to face his opponent, Marilène Leclair of Sancta Sedes. Maxim was known to many as a powerful warrior who had defied death itself. Marilène, in contrast, was a green Deacon of the church with little combat experience to her name. She had survived the ordeal at the Palace of the Firebird, however. Perhaps she did stand some chance.
It was yet fairly early in the morning when those premier generals of the Hashinara Clan arrived at the doors of Yakisoba Yashiki. A heavy rain had begun to fall on their short journey over, clouds blotting out the sun overhead and casting an eerie shadow below. This effect seemed perfect for the dark Western mansion that now loomed before them. While not unheard of in international ports such as Shimonoseki, architecture like this was still very rare in Japan. The pervading feeling of the unnatural, the out of place, was only heightened by the glowing lights behind the mansion's crimson curtains and the infrequent flashes of lightning above. A sign just to the left of the door, obviously added as an afterthought, read: "焼きそば屋敷"
By a happy turn of fate, Fubuki stepped down from her meeting with Mōri Motonari at about the same time Maxim and Evaine approached with their new companion. The Unnatural Oni wore the slumped shoulders and stooped posture of an angsty, defeated teenager. It seemed that Maxim intended to take their new acquaintance with them on their mission to return the Eerie Tree to its rightful owner. As the misfit group prepared to depart, however, they were interrupted yet again. Watanabe Hajime, that pale, crystallized oni who had given Fubuki her* Hannya Vizard, floated down to Maxim and favored him with a cool glare. Where, she wanted to know, had she found this lanky oni boy? That line of questioning came as a bit of a surprise to Maxim, who demanded in turn to know what she had to do with him. According to Hajime, the boy's "rehabilitation" was not complete, whatever that meant. If not returned to the care of the Hannya Sūhai, he would not be able to speak again. Something clicked in Fubuki's head and she* turned her attention to the laconic boy's aura. There was something familiar about it, something she* was nearly certain she'd* seen somewhere-
With the harrowing experiences of Yakisoba Yashiki behind them, many of the Hashinara generals chose to return to the arena on the outskirts of town. In truth, Knight Commander Maxim had other things on his mind. He wished to go find the Eerie Tree Ryūzaki Sanosuke had uprooted and thrown into the eastern sky, then return it to its rightful owner. It was, Evaine agreed, the knightly thing to do. However, Maxim's sometimes-companion Fubuki wanted to join him on the expedition, right after she* tied up some business at the arena. So it was that Maxim wound up here with that cold-eyed oni and Aotsuki Tsukamoto. The latter soon left on his own business and Fubuki made her* way to the Mōri box, apparently intent on speaking with their Daimyō. That was when Maxim saw him.
With all three pieces of the Imperial Regalia in hand and the blessed light of Amaterasu at his back, Aotsuki Tsukamoto returned to at Enryaku-ji where Hizashi awaited him. The current Herald of the Sun had requested that the other cardinal generals all be present as well. While neither Aotsuki nor the others quite understood why, they all accompanied him to delve once again into that painting which hung on the temple wall.
Once the situation following Fubuki's attempted time-assassination had cooled down, Knight Commander Maxim looked around for his lanky companion. The Unnatural Oni had bolted yet again after his snake-throw technique had utterly failed to impact the Hound of Tindalos. It seemed like he'd made his way back down that same set of stairs to the tunnels beneath the arena. Indeed, Evaine was able to pick up his tracks, leading Maxim down that hall, past the portcullis, and to the same junction past where their chase had taken him last time. Meanwhile, Fubuki was collecting herself* and her companions after that ordeal. Fortunately, it seemed like nobody had actually been hurt. The Hound had eyes for her* alone. Perhaps now they could finally be about the business of returning that Eerie Tree to its rightful owner at Yakisoba Yashiki. It was then that Fubuki noticed Maxim was gone. With little else to do, she* set about preparing a set of rented horses for their expedition while waiting for him to return.
By cutting an indirect path around the side of the arena, Maxim and Fubuki (currently disguised as Hospodar Mikhail) were able to bring their dangerous cargo back to Yakisoba Yashiki without actually taking it through town. The Eerie Tree had actually been quite docile during their journey. However, that didn't excuse the risk they'd be taking by bringing the thing which had effectively killed Aotsuki Tsukamoto into a major population center. So, while it took a little longer, the two opted for the safer option.
In an attempt to broaden The Wolfpack's utility as a mercenary organization and relationship with the Hashinara Clan, Grand Administrator Tōdaisen Nobuhara developed a plan by which complaints of mid-to-low-level threats across their domain would be collated as Bounties with minor rewards offered. These requests, while not necessarily worthy of interest by the Cardinal Generals themselves, also offered an opportunity for the many mid-ranking generals of the Hashinara to gain real-battle experience. The Wolfpack would have first pick of these bounties, but any they did not undertake would be released for any other generals to pick up the next day. For his first Bounty, Knight Commander Maxim chose to tackle reports of Feral Crab Swarms on the coasts around Ago. Put forth by Harukor, this request had to do with large, ravenous crabs attacking with eerily military precision to steal catches from the fishermen of Ago. Maxim summoned Tarō and first gave him a brief of the situation. Then, he teamed the eager ashigaru up with Kiban, Ishinomori Naho, and Elyan as a leader before asking Shigeaki Fujino to teleport them to the last known location of crab-plunder activity.
When Maxim finished receiving his report about the bounty Elyan and his crew had accomplished, he found himself, most uncommonly, without anything in particular demanding his attention. The majority of The Wolfpack were out in Ago, enjoying the many delicacies and delights the port town had to offer. Haures, too, was off on her own business somewhere. For the moment, the center of Ago Manor seemed to contain no souls save himself and Kashirin.
Knight Commander Maxim still had questions for his meeting partner, but he also understood Tōdaisen Nobuhara to be a very busy man. After agreeing to meet with Empress Genmei in regards to his prospective letter of recommendation, Maxim offered to walk and talk on their way to the legendary figure's chambers. Nobuhara was pleased to oblige.
As the end of his audience with Empress Genmei came to an end, Knight Commander Maxim had but one more question. If he were to run into one of the Empress' lost retainers, say, Isonokami no Maro, how would he recognize them? It would be of great assistance if she could provide a description. Lady Genmei, however, could do something even better. She directed Maxim to traverse the labyrinth beneath Wakigami Castle, in the dungeons. At the end of the maze, he would find her self-imposed sepulcher, now empty, but still guarded by realistic depictions of Isonokami no Maro and Fujiwara no Fuhito.
Despite the horrific revelation stretched out before him in the depths of Wakigami Castle, Knight Commander Maxim waited patiently for the team of "mystical experts" to arrive and examine what looked very much like a portal to hell. All the while, the languid, blindfolded youth within the chamber worked away at his anvil, striking red-hot metal methodically, apparently forging by touch alone. Finally, reinforcements were at his back. Maxim felt a chilly presence fill the air as first one, then a trio more red-skulled and black-robed Deep Wraiths glided out from the labyrinth. They were followed by Albionite wizard Mary Lyn, who greeted her countryman with a terse nod. Not to be left out from such a momentous discovery, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo herself* was in attendance last. Although personally far away, beyond the Veil of Sleep, Yoshitakatomo could act through her* Sheele, Hashinara Kiyowara, as though it was her* own body.
Now that Ryūzaki Sanosuke had passed through the portal into Yomi on his own business and Hashinara Kiyowara had returned to her laboratory for other business, that left Maxim more or less alone with Shax. That was an unenviable position to be sure. Mary Lyn, at least, was there, but she clearly had no idea how to deal with their current situation. Worse, the smirking demoness still held a pair of souls dancing in her grip. One of them was Maxim's, but she hadn't been given any orders to return it.
Stepping out from Ago Manor to the chill night air beyond, Knight Commander Maxim found his retainers Kitsuno and Shishikura Makiko. The former, in particular, wore an expression of satisfaction bordering on smugness. Kitsuno had made no secret of the fact that it would be in Maxim's best interest for them to act together more often. Intending to make for Shimonoseki before the late hour grew even later, Maxim once again encountered some hesitation on the psychic's part. She was watching some kind of fight, apparently. To judge by her mental tone, it must be a very exciting one at that. When Maxim asked for more details, the psychic grew suddenly evasive. Maxim decided, however, that now was not the time to pursue answers. He merely asked for a jump to Shimonoseki and then allowed Fujino to be on her way.
His revelation about the portal in Wakigami Castle's basement was finished and the yarn had spun out about Fujiwara no Fuhito's ancient deeds. With no other business at present, Maxim got the impression that he was being dismissed. Before he left, however, Empress Genmei had one more tidbit of information for him. Having been dismayed at his "embarrassing" display of attempted etiquette earlier in the day, she had used some of her influence to secure for him a tutor. This person, who even now awaited him at Ago Manor, would help him upon the road to becoming a Japanese gentleman.
Knight Commander Maxim wasn't sure what was happening to him. Everyone had suddenly started fawning over him. The civilians around Ryūzaki Sanosuke's fight, those who had clung to him on the way to The Tanuki's Glee, and even Shigeaki Fujino. All were suddenly completely, inexplicably entranced by Maxim.
Maxim studied his foe closely. This strange, flying woman didn't seem to be a threat. At least, not in the conventional sense. Her repeated attempts to force hugs and kisses upon him and the constant proclamations of love were a bit unsettling, however. Shishikura Makiko seemed to agree. She asked if they were in danger, and Maxim wasn't at first sure how to respond. Were they? He opted to ask the woman herself.
Carefully, making sure not to overcompensate and drop off into the pit below, Maxim traversed the series of catwalks beneath Old Ōuchi Manor. In defiance of his size, the Knight Commander's sabatons moved lightly on the swaying catwalks. At no point did he risk losing his balance. Soon he was across, and Nagasone Kotetsu was looking up at him with an expression of surprise. It was late, she suggested, almost midnight, in a location that was supposed to be secret. She hadn't really expected to meet Maxim again at such a time and place.
It had passed midnight when Maxim and his cohorts descended the bluff from Old Ōuchi Manor. Their return to Shimonoseki was uneventful, save for some discussion with Kitsuno. As his adviser, the frill-decked oni understandably wanted to know what had been discussed with Nagasone Kotetsu back in that underground forge. For his part, Maxim saw no reason to keep it secret. He explained to the other that it was his intent to recruit Kotetsu. To a certain degree, he'd been successful, although he still wished for someone more experienced to look over their agreement. With the patronizing way she'd taken a letter from Empress Genmei, Maxim was concerned that Kotetsu may feel like he'd be an easy target to take advantage of. This answer satisfied Kitsuno, and also prompted the removal of at least one of the spells Maxim had been "suffering" under the whole day. He'd remain perfectly handsome and unblemished, as such could only aid in his work, but the enchantment causing citizens to actively adore him was a bit more than Kitsuno had bargained for.
It was the darkest hour of the night; the perfect time for ninja business. It was just such ninja business which drew the five Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan to Iga. For some time, Fujibayashi Nagato had been working here to eliminate the remnants of the resistance group known as Igamono. With them out of the way, and Hattori Hanzō dead, there would be nothing standing in the way of Nagato becoming head Jōnin of the Iga Ninja. Her first order of business promised to be a formal alliance with the Hashinara Clan. Therefore, it behooved the clan to lend their aid in this final confrontation. The Igamono, staunch traditional independents, would never allow the Iga Ninja to formally ally with a clan. They were a minority now, but enough families still backed them that they could prove a threat if left alone. One such family, led by Iganozeki Butsugai, had agreed to speak with Nagato tonight. Canny and with plenty of shinobi experience to draw upon, she expected a trap. Therefore, having five of the most powerful individuals in Japan at her back was a great reassurance.
Perhaps some time had passed, or perhaps Hakutaku had seen to that in her own subtle way. Regardless, when Knight Commander Maxim arrived back on the deck of the Matsumoto Black Galleon, he found the two guard dogs still there waiting for him. Both Gamou Terukazu and Jirōuemon were grudgingly willing to let him in now. Not because they thought he had any business being there—Maxim still reeked of suspicion to both of them—but because orders had come down from the ship's owner that he was to be let through.
As chill as the night air was, Maxim was glad to put that warm, dewy, chaotic place behind him. He was just returning from a "trade meeting" at the Matsumoto Black Galleon docked in Ago Harbor. Docked in his harbor. That made it his responsibility, but didn't really make dealing with the Black Blade any simpler. Still, he'd accomplished what he'd gone there for. Now, he could return to Ago Manor and... There was a sound. As Maxim stood before the manor's wide wooden doors, he head it again. A mechanical clinking and clanking was coming from right around the corner. It set his teeth on edge. Maxim checked his weaponry and stepped around to the side of the building.
Maxim nearly reached the front door of Ago Manor before the next disturbance happened. His gauntleted hand landed on the wood. Before he could pull it open, a resounding crash thundered through the air all around him. That sounded like it had come from somewhere in the woods beyond the manor. What's worse, he could hear someone shouting in the distance—screaming for help. With thoughts, perhaps, of a night which never seemed to end, Maxim stepped around the manor and bounded off into the trees. For a time, there was nothing but the stampeding sound coming from somewhere ahead. That is, until the black knight's shockingly sprightly step brought him soon out of the tree line and into a broad clearing on the other side.
Starting with the dawn, the Mōri Martial Arts Tournament once again saw a fine turnout from all across the land. Either all these generals had some manner of quick transportation, comparable to the Hashinara Clan's teleportation network, or they were staying in Shimonoseki for the duration. Perhaps a combination of both. The morning proceeded with a series of intense fights and only a single death. Once all was done, Fubuki, Honda Tadakatsu, Maxim, and Momo would be advancing to the independent semifinals. Accounts of their matches can be found elsewhere. During and after the bouts, however, a few other events of interest were happening throughout the crowd.
Sitting in his prescribed place in the stands, surrounded by the many daughters of the Hōjō Clan, Knight Commander Maxim gripped a cute felt doll in either hand. One looked just like him. The other, like Aotsuki Tsukamoto. He briefly wondered how he'd managed to get into this situation. Something was prodding him in the back. Something soft and yielding. Maxim tried to ignore it as he shot off a quick message to Ryūzaki Sanosuke, who stood far away in the crowd holding his own doll. Haures had called this goat-thing which kept handing him dolls a "Gluttony Demon." The trinkets didn't seem to be magical or dangerous, but it was folly to trust a demon, so he urged caution.
It was still some time before noon when Maxim and his compatriots arrived in Osaka. An observer might have seen a strange collection of miscreants in the foreign knight's company. Besides Haures, Maggu, and respectable Shigeaki Fujino, the poverty goddess Kashirin also lurked somewhere nearby. And there were observers in abundance. Fujino seemed to have taken them to a nicer part of the city. Osaka Castle rose into the sky not far away, and the well-to-do pedestrians on this street looked upon their strange visitors with suspicion verging on aversion.
In the winter sun, with the oven of the Black Toad Inn behind him, Greasy Ii began to sweat. He'd been completely unable to do anything about that ruffian (Maxim, was it?) throwing his weight around and trying to kidnap cute little Oyau. And now, when he'd gone as far as to throw himself upon the mercy of the Silver General, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, it seemed his plea had fallen on deaf ears.
It was time for the final match; that which would determine the victor of the clan portion of the Mōri Clan Tournament. The Hashinara Clan would be facing the Ryūzōji Clan and each of the Cardinal Generals had managed to make it to watch. All, that is, except Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. Instead, the Daimyō had a sobering announcement for her* generals.
At the sound and light, the gathered crowd looked as one to the center of the arena. There, under a fading shower of fireworks, stood an unfamiliar figure and The Black Blade of Doom: Date Masamune. They faced each other and seemed ready to battle. From the southeastern quadrant, a gasp rang out. It was Katakura Kojūrō. Neither she nor Masuda Kita seemed thrilled at the appearance of another Date Masamune. Indeed, there were some murmurs worming their way through the crowd. Wasn't Date Masamune dead, obliterated by Musashibō Benkei in the tournament? Mōri Motonari's voice cut through the muddle like a blade. She chided both the unknown figure and Masamune. There were no further fights scheduled that day and, what's more, their intrusion on the field when she was about to announce the champion's prize was far too presumptuous. At a swelling of support from the crowd, the two rivals backed down. They would have their battle after the ceremonies concluded.
Following the conclusion of the tournament (plus some extra festivities) for the day, Knight Commander Maxim prepared to take his leave of Shimonoseki. Before he could so much as stand from his seat, however, he received a mental missive from his adviser, Kitsuno. Apparently someone had shown up at Ago Manor in response to one of Maxim's summons. He could deal with it now, or later, or simply have Kitsuno take care of the introductions. Always a hands-on type of man, Maxim opted for the former.
The call for recruits had certainly brought in all sorts. Knight Commander Maxim idly wondered just what kind of unique individual would show up on his doorstep next. For now, he had business with someone more level-headed. Making his way through the narrow halls of Ago Manor, Maxim knocked and entered the office of Tanahase Muramatsu.
At the edge of Ago Harbor, Maxim reconvened with his party in front of the Matsumoto Black Galleon. Ōgon no Hakuhen was with him, a fact which immediately incensed Netabi Shigehisa. That the big golden man was looking abashed meant little to his victim. Shigehisa had been laid out on the docks in full view of the public and he was not about to let Hakuhen, that despoiler, enter his life once again. Fortunately, Maxim too was of the opinion that Hakuhen would not join them aboard the ship. Instead, he, Shishikura Makiko, and Kashirin would stand guard outside. When he'd given orders not to make a scene, it had been to all three of them. One's failing was the others' as well. Makiko, although disappointed, accepted this with dignity. Kashirin did no such thing.
Sasori Akiko joined The Wolfpack.

To disregard what must be firsthand knowledge of the Demonic Realm would be the height of foolishness. These creatures pose a— —agreed to aid Maxim in achieving some kind of "vengeance" against Honda Tadakatsu, formerly of the Tokugawa Clan. I understand that she wounded him when he first arrived in our land, but that wound has long been healed. Is he truly so petty as to drag this little vendetta out over such a long period? It matters little. In aiding him with this, I will both create a debt to the Aotsuki Clan we can leverage later and an opportunity to practice the onmyōji arts against a true demon. My research, though limited, has given me the creature's true name: Eligos. A demon of war and Pride. Why, then, was she serving Mammon, Prince of Greed? Perhaps these hierarchies are not as strict as I once believed—
To whom it may concern at Ago Manor, In light of recent vandalism within Palatium Humilitatis, property of His Glorious Light, Lucifer, the Court of Pride hereby orders reparations in the amount listed at the end of this document. The debt may be paid by either of the bad actors involved in this act of defacement. Specifically, Knight Commander Maxim, Duchess Eligos, or any combination of the same. Failure to tender payment within one day of the incident will result in further consequences to follow.

After the eventful match between Maxim and Momo, yet before Mōri Motonari's Yashiki Summit, a small sliver of time was almost lost to the ages. Yet events did transpire during that sliver, and they are no less worthy of our attention. Let us consider them now...
At the behest of Daimyō Mōri Motonari, many of the leaders from today's tournament arrived at Yakisoba Yashiki for lunch and a summit. Their topic of conversation was none other than the cataclysm which had broken the sky at the tournament but a few hours ago, and the creatures it had released into the world. Given that this was an event which could no doubt affect all of Japan, Motonari was disappointed to see how few leaders had opted to attend. Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the current Shogun, was at least in attendance, with her adviser Chitosemaru standing slyly behind her. Also present were Aotsuki Tsukamoto of the young Aotsuki Clan and the many other heads of the Hashinara hydra. Even Niiro Tadatsuru, Daimyō of the roguish Shimazu was lazily kicking her feet up on the table, with some manner of Wani whispering advice into her ear. No representatives of the Hōjō or Takeda arrived, however, and nor did anyone from the Alexandrian detachment visiting the city. It would have to do. As Hospodar Mikhail finished writing down their orders in his red velvet notebook and vanished to the kitchens, Motonari began the meeting.
Most of The Wolfpack still remained at the tournament or were out on daytime business, so Maxim gathered a retinue of only Tanahase Muramatsu, Elaine, Harukor, and Kitsuno for the construction of his first castle. Alice of Spades was already there when they arrived, sitting on a rock on a flat slab of land a few miles from Ago Manor. A pensive look crossed her face as she stared down at the blueprints. "Why did it have to be a moat? That's going to be the most difficult part..."
After Mōri Motonari's Yashiki Summit, yet before the eventful match between Maxim and Fubuki, a small sliver of time was almost lost to the ages. Yet events did transpire during that sliver, and they are no less worthy of our attention. Let us consider them now...
"Try not to hit me too hard this time. That 'shadow' of yours packs a punch." Such was Fubuki's opening statement as the mysterious swordswoman faced off against Maxim in the ravaged Mōri arena. This was to be the final round of the independent bracket, and therefore the tournament as a whole. Both fighters had powers not yet plumbed, and the audience held its collective breath, shuffled to the edge of their collective seat, and awaited the foreign barbarian's reply. He gave none.
After the Mōri Tournament finally concluded, the Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan found themselves pulled away for a spate of administrative tasks across their domains. It seemed as though an interminable time passed. Was it days? Weeks? Months? Half an entire year? No, it was but a single hour. At the end of such, each general received an urgent communication from Tōdaisen Nobuhara; a call for a meeting in person at Wakigami Castle. These events were growing less common as Shigeaki Fujino's mental network became more and more the norm for the Hashinara Clan. It followed, then, that whatever Nobuhara summoned them for was likely to be of great import.
Following the meeting in Wakigami Castle's third-floor audience chamber, Knight Commander Maxim did not take advantage of the clan's teleportation services. Instead, he left the room on foot, still having business within the castle. His sheele, Evaine, followed closely behind with a look of mild concern on her face. She'd felt somewhat uncomfortable in that meeting for some reason; as though something powerful yet unseen had been watching them all throughout. With a shake of her white locks she cast the feeling away and asked Maxim where they were going.
A few timely teleports later and Maxim stood with Empress Genmei and Prince Hozumi within a pleasantly-appointed room in the noble wing of Makami-jō. A great wooden trunk, presumably filled with all of the Empress' belongings, sat between them. Outside, the great clock in the building's face tolled out four times. "Did you need anything else in particular since you will be living here from now on?" the Knight Commander asked. "This shall be sufficient for now." Genmei picked a piece of lint off the large, Western-style bed, but admired the silky curtains hanging around it with an impressed smile. "Prince Hozumi and I will take a shopping trip to Ago soonest to find decorations for our new quarters."
The attention of many greater beings was upon the heavens, where Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Ryūzaki Sanosuke were engaged in their first conflict with the Arbiters. However, these were not the only events of note transpiring at this time. Back on Earth, a number of stories were continuing, or just taking their first steps...
"Do you know a giant snake is in Ago Harbor? He doesn't seem to be threatening anyone, but..." Such was the message Knight Commander Maxim received from Kitsuno as he prepared for a trip to Mount Ōe. "Don't mind the snake, but let me know if there are any problems. You mentioned the people I was looking for are on Mount Ōe?" "They're probably just waking up around now. Check with one of the Wardens and they should be able to point you in the right direction. I'd come with, but this 'Hebizawa Mei' is in desperate need of a makeover."
Against the looming threat of the Unstoppable Holiday Force, Yukijirushi Santazaemon, the brave Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan gathered up their presents and hopped on the Holiday Express heading north. Perhaps in the snowy fields of Hokkaido they could find some peace. But it was not to be. That monstrous champion of Oyamatsumi, Santazaemon, caught up with the speeding train and violently inserted himself into the last car. It was up to the Cardinal Generals and what allies they had been able to gather on such short notice to hold the monster off. If they could just survive until the Christmas Tree at the front of the train gathered enough Holiday Cheer... It was the last hope they had for a jolly Christmas.
