Hashinara Katamoto enters the stage, and the world knows not what is to come.
A nice and accurate depiction of the events surrounding Hashinara Katamoto (also known as Katsusada Shishauezaemon and Hashinara Yoshitakatomo) in the Tsuwamono Era of Japan.
Hashinara Katamoto enters the stage, and the world knows not what is to come.
After a successful attempt on his life, deceased Daimyō Hashinara Katamoto is resurrected as something more than human through the dark workings of the Matsumoto Clan. He begins his crusade to recover his fallen daughter from the underworld and bring to justice those responsible.
Now accustomed to his new powers, Hashinara Katamoto gathers those who are still loyal to him. These include Ryūzaki Sanosuke, a capable general who served his daughter, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, a humble but beautiful farm boy with a silver tongue, and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, dark scion to the clan responsible for his resurrection.
Hashinara Katamoto and his new generals meet with legendary bandit group Goemon's Virtuous Thieves. Through revelry, they convince Raizō and his bandits to join in on an attack on Wakigami Castle to free Katamoto's assets from their new rulers.
After a heated battle with the Yasutane Clan, who occupied the fortress in his absence, Hashinara Katamoto and his generals reestablish control over Wakigami Castle and, by extension, Yamato Province.
In order to obscure his true identity, Hashinara Katamoto takes on the guise of "Katsusada Shishauezaemon", an adviser to Princess Yoshiyuki, for whom he instates a lookalike as figurehead.
The Yasutane Clan, who had occupied Hashinara Katamoto's domain after his death, are brought low and their remaining members, retainers, and assets vassalized under the New Hashinara.
Following the liberation of Wakigami Castle, Hashinara Katamoto, now masquerading as Katsusada Shishauezaemon, is called upon by Tōdaisen Nobuhara, an official at nearby Tōdai-ji Shrine, to resolve a dispute. The onmyōji, or priests, of the shrine and the miko, priestesses, are torn on who will be the next high officiant. Katamoto orders a battle between the two candidates to begin on the next day to determine who is more worthy.
Under the orders of Katsusada Shishauezaemon, Tōdaisen Nobuhara and Yokokazu Ume engage in a contest of arms to determine who will become the high officiant of Tōdai-ji. Yokokazu Ume wins the battle, removing Nobuhara's right arm in the process.
A massive, invisible skeleton suddenly attacks Tōdai-ji after the battle between Tōdaisen Nobuhara and Yokokazu Ume. Although driven off by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and allies, this event presages military movements by the Chōsokabe Clan who inhabit Shikkoku to the west.
Having lost the battle to become high priest of Tōdai-ji, Tōdaisen Nobuhara instead seeks prestige by attaching himself to Hashinara Katamoto as the new Daimyō's personal assistant. As Katamoto currently lacks any administrative functionaries, and the man seems capable and cunning, he is accepted with little question.
Tsukijō Hanahane, a wealthy local nobleman who has engaged in trade with the Chōsokabe Clan, gifts Ichimonji Sen to Katsusada Shishauezaemon, and tells of the weapon's origins in Shikkoku under the mysterious clan that rules there. According to his testimony, the Chōsokabe have been inactive for many years, but now appear to be preparing for war.
A horde of undead creatures, led by a general of the Chōsokabe Clan attack the Canal District of Wakigami. With the support of Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his trusted generals, they are driven back with few civilian casualties and their leader captured.
Leader of the attack on the Canal District, Kamimusubi, is captured by Katsusada Shishauezaemon. It is revealed that she is a Kyonshī, and was sent by the Chōsokabe Clan for unknown reasons. Shishauezaemon keeps her in his custody.
In response to the unprovoked attack on their neighboring province, Katsusada Shishauezaemon declares war upon the Chōsokabe Clan.
Katsusada Shishauezaemon pens two official missives and dispatches them to neighboring powers, the Tsuchimi Clan and the Tanahase Clan. In these letters, he details the threat posed by the Chōsokabe Clan and entreats their assistance in fighting back the invading force.
Utilizing a dark ritual, Katsusada Shishauezaemon returns Kamimusubi to unlife under his own control. Though the Kyonshī is mute, he learns much from her about the Chōsokabe Clan.
During the battle for Wakayama, Ryūzaki Sanosuke subdues and captures a powerful Forsaken called by its fellows as Takamimusubi. The creature is later put into Katsusada Shishauezaemon's care.
Following the battle, Katsusada Shishauezaemon makes an official visit to Wakayama to view the damage. While there, he orders the creation of the Monument of the Battle of Wakayama to honor the miko troops who fell in the battle.
While in Kii, Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Katusada Shishauezaemon hear rumors that an Oni(race) is attacking travelers in the province.
Investigating rumors of Oni attacks, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and Ryūzaki Sanosuke both begin traveling to Kongobu-ji in eastern Kii. Having just returned to Wakigami, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri are both ordered to make for the temple as well.
The four major generals of the Hashinara complete their journey and reunite for the first time since the attack on Kii began.
Upon arrival at Kongobu-ji, the generals of the Hashinara discover that the resident priests have all been slain by unknown individuals. Though there were rumors of an Oni here, these wounds seem to have been inflicted by weapons.
While investigating the slaughter at Kongobu-ji, the generals of the Hashinara encounter a monstrous Oni just south of the temple. They engage in battle against it, but Katsusada Shishauezaemon's magic freezes the creature in place and then dominates its mind, turning it into an ally.
Under Katsusada Shishauezaemon's spell, a monstrous Oni is mesmerized into joining the Hashinara. For reasons perhaps best left unexplained, Shishauezaemon decides to name the enormous brute Baby Huey.
After dealing with Baby Huey, the generals of the Hashinara encounter the true perpetrators behind the slaughter of priests at Kongobu-ji: a pair of Kyonshi named Amenotokotachi and Umashiashikabihikoji. The Hashinara forces engage them in battle and slay both without allied casualties. Both corpses are put into Katsusada Shishauezaemon's care.
In Wakigami Castle, an attempt is made on Katsusada Shishauezaemon's life by "Dark Ninja" Momochi Sandayu. Thanks to the timely intervention of Tsukuda Katsuo, the attack is not successful, but Sandayu escapes.
Tsukuda Katsuo introduces himself as a ninja from Iga. He explains that his master, Fujibayashi Nagato is currently in danger from a group called Igamono, and requests the aid of the Hashinara. Katsuo further offers to guide the Hashinara generals through Iga Province and to the city of Iga if they agree to help. Perhaps owing the ninja his life, Katsusada Shishauezaemon agrees.
Guided by Tsukuda Katsuo, the four major generals of the Hashinara Clan travel to Iga to meet with Fujibayashi Nagato.
Before his massive, ugly body has even cooled, Katsusada Shishauezaemon enacts dark magic to resurrect Baby Huey as a potent undead creature. Now more intelligent and more powerful than ever before, he chooses to join the Hashinara of his own will.
Upon arriving at Iga, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his most trusted generals (plus Baby Huey) are led to a secluded tea house and meet with Fujibayashi Nagato of the Iga Ninja. Before the meeting can proceed, however, the group is attacked by two Igamono, Crocodile and Stoplight. When the two are near defeat, the leader of the Igamono, Vengeance joins the fray. After a desperate battle in which Baby Huey is slain, all three enemy ninja are defeated and Vengeance captured.
Now in command of a significant number of Iga Ninja, Katsusada Shishauezaemon puts them to work in recovering the corpse of @Ichinomiya Karen. This daughter of Ichinomiya Hachirō, Daimyō of the Ichinomiya Clan, was slain in conflict with the Chōsokabe Clan. She could prove a useful tool in gathering more allies for the war.
Upon returning to Kongobu-ji with the intent of inspecting new priests instated to take control of the shrine, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his generals instead find that the onmyōji have been killed and raised as zombies. A short battle ensues, in which the offending undead are slaughtered and the area cleaned. No further attempt to colonize this accursed shrine would be undertaken for quite some time after.
Under the orders of Katsusada Shishauezaemon, the captured Forsaken, Takamimusubi, is bound to Tōdaisen Nobuhara as his personal familiar and bodyguard.
The two Kyonshī captured from a previous skirmish with the Chōsokabe Clan are later revived by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and placed under his control. The first, Amenotokotachi is assigned to serve Ryūzaki Sanosuke, while the second, Umashiashikabihikoji is sent to reinforce Aotsuki Tsukamoto. Meanwhile, Katamoto keeps Kamimusubi, the third of their Kotoamatsukami, as his own servant.
The body of Ichinomiya Karen is recovered by Iga Ninja at the command of Katsusada Shishauezaemon and delivered to him for use as a bargaining chip with the Ichinomiya Clan.
Hashinara forces make landing at Awa Harbor and engage with the Chōsokabe Clan's forces stationed there under the command of Chōsokabe Nobuchika. As the Chōsokabe Forsaken troops are defeated, Nobuchika is captured, and another enemy general, Motoyama Tsugutoshi is released from their apparent supernatural control. During the conflict, Ishikawa Goemon faces off with Momochi Sandayu, her former master, now Forsaken and culprit behind an attempted assassination on Katsusada Shishauezaemon. Goemon suffers a severe wound to the stomach, but Sandayu is slain.
Seeking a more efficient method of communication, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his cohorts scout Shigeaki Fujino, a local psychic displaced by the actions of the Chōsokabe Clan. She immediately makes herself invaluable to the clan by establishing an organization-wide mental network that allows instantaneous communication with virtually no limit on distance, as well as reliable transportation to anywhere she can navigate to on a map through teleportation.
With Oni forces on loan from the Mori Clan, Hashinara forces begin their march north from Awa to Chosokabe Clan-occupied Sanuki. Their objective is to defeat Forsaken forces stationed at Takamatsu Castle and return control of both the fortress and the province to Motoyama Tsugutoshi, Daimyō of the Motoyama Clan.
Hashinara forces led by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his four most trusted generals march on Takamatsu Castle in Sanuki to engage the occupying Chōsokabe Clan. Upon arrival, they find the battlefield cloaked in a magical mist, and must fight their way through a pack of Nue, supernatural predators which use the fog to deadly advantage. Commanding the enemy forces are Chōsokabe Kanetsugu and Chōsokabe Kunichika. After a difficult battle due to field conditions, the former general is captured and the latter is slain in battle as the Hashinara claim victory.
During the battle for Takamatsu Castle, Chōsokabe Kunichika is slain by a squad of miko archers after they fire into his supposed location within magical fog he himself has conjured. He is slain by the hail of arrows. Katsusada Shishauezaemon later attempts to speak with him using necromancy, but finds Kunichika to be acerbic, rude, and completely unhelpful.
By using dark magic to forcefully read the memories of Chōsokabe Kanetsugu, Katsusada Shishauezaemon learns that the Chōsokabe Clan is based in their ancient capital of Nankoku in Tōsa province. He immediately begins plans for a final assault.
Three generals of the Ōeyama-dōji assigned to aid the Hashinara by the Mōri Clan meet in conference with Katsusada Shishauezaemon to orchestrate a plan of attack against the Chōsokabe Clan at Nankoku. Toraguma-dōji, Hoshikuma-dōji, and Kanaguma-dōnyo advise a careful assault, with a squad of Oni stationed outside of the castle to catch any escaping generals and ensure that the clan is fully destroyed.
Prepared now to use her as a reagent for his own dark ends, Katsusada Shishauezaemon orders a squad of Iga Ninja to deliver Ichinomiya Karen's corpse to him from the mainland.
Under the command of Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his most trusted generals, Hashinara forces march south from Sanuki, through Awa, and into Tōsa Province. They stage in the wastelands there for their final assault on Nankoku and the Chōsokabe Clan.
Hashinara forces led by Katsusada Shishauezaemon attack Nankoku in an attempt to destroy the Chōsokabe Clan and the threat posed by their Forsaken once and for all. They are met by Chōsokabe Motochika, going under her adopted name of Amenominakanushi, a giant Forsaken called Arehate Daidara, and a number of other powerful generals and troops. With a final blow from Baby Huey, the Hashinara slay Motochika and seem as though they will succeed, but the enemy general's death leads to a black hole that threatens to devour the entirety of Tōsa or worse. Only through the timely use of a secret technique passed on to Ishikawa Goemon by her mentor Momochi Sandayu is the disaster averted and victory truly claimed. When the disaster is averted, all Forsaken have vanished and only the Hashinara remain in Nankoku's ruins.
Descending from the sky like an avenging angel, Baby Huey destroys Chosokabe Motochika's porcelain body with a single smash. Though the false goddess' death leads to yet another disaster, this mighty strike from the esteemed General is the one that truly seals the fate of the Chōsokabe Clan. The fallen Daimyō's weapon, Necrom, is passed into the hands of Katsusada Shishauezaemon.
Performing a dark, necromantic ritual, Katsusada Shishauezaemon resurrects Ichinomiya Karen as an undead creature with her memories of life but under his control. It is his intent to use her as a bargaining chip against Ichinomiya Hachirō in dealings with his Ichinomiya Clan.
Following the death of the false goddess, Chōsokabe Motochika, Katsusada Shishauezaemon calls upon her father's soul, Chōsokabe Kunichika, to glean some information about what happened to the Chōsokabe Clan. Although acerbic in manner, Kunichika reveals that it was Motochika who led the clan down this dark, void-ridden path, and that her soul likely no longer exists in any way that Shishauezaemon can use. What's more, the fallen shaman informs Shishauezaemon that it was Momochi Sandayu who was hired to assassinate Hashinara Yoshiyuki. Sandayu is now dead, but the force behind the assassination, the dark ninja's employer, remains unknown.
Once he has returned to Wakigami, Katsusada Shishauezaemon visits the captured ninja Vengeance in his castle's dungeons. In chains, the erstwhile head of the Igamono revolutionaries is not cowed by his position. Rather, he swears a new purpose in life. Vengeance for Vengeance. His oath is to kill Shishauezamon if it takes him to his last breath and beyond.
With the trials of war behind him for now, Katsusada Shishauezaemon decides to make good on his plans to sway Ichinomiya Hachirō and the Ichinomiya Clan to his side. With the newly-resurrected Ichinomiya Karen and Kamimusubi, he travels to Ise Province and arrives a day later at Ise Grand Shrine. There, he is met first by head priest Matsumashita Daiki, who forbids Kamimusubi access on the grounds that she is undead. Though displeased by this decision, Shishauezaemon leaves his Kyonshī guard behind and enters the shrine. Expecting a joyful reunion between father and daughter, he is instead rebuffed rudely by Ichinomiya Hachirō. The reason for this quickly becomes clear when Shishauezaemon discovers that the old man is haunted by his daughter's ghost. In such a situation, it is natural for him to assume the Ichinomiya Karen with Shishauezaemon to be an impostor or trick. Empty-handed, Shishauezaemon returns to Wakigami, but soon finds that the ghost of Karen has left her living father and followed him home.
After taking some time following the death of her mother, Chōsokabe Motochika, Chōsokabe Nobuchika approaches Katsusada Shishauezaemon and the figurehead replacing Hashinara Yoshiyuki with a decision. She remains concerned about the other rifts, two beyond what her mother created, that continue to plague the land. Without any other family ties to hold her back, Nobuchika swears her sword to the Princess-Daimyō of the Hashinara and officially joins them as a general.
An official representative of the Imperial Court, the humorless Matsutada Tadamatsu arrives in Wakigami from the capital in Echizen. His mission is dictated by the Shogun himself, to investigate the recent activities of the Hashinara Clan, including their usurping of the Yasutane Clan and war with the Chōsokabe Clan. Upon his arrival, however, Tadamatsu immediately disappears. Shishauezaemon, concerned over the diplomatic ramifications, quickly makes arrangements to salvage the situation and investigate.
Upon hearing from an Administrative Flunky that Matsutada Tadamatsu, emissary from the Imperial Court has failed to reach a second checkpoint in Wakigami, Katsusada Shishauezaemon gathers his most talented generals as a search party to find the missing diplomat. His actions are hastened by news that Vengeance has escaped from the castle's dungeons. They have not traveled far into the Canal District when they are attacked by a group of Igamono ninja. Shishauezaemon battles alongside Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, Kamimusubi, and Yoshitaka Hitsuie to fight off the would-be assassins, but it is a brutal battle. Partway through the unnamed Administrative Flunky turns on Shishauezaemon and attempts to land a killing blow, but is rebuffed by the timely arrival of Fujibayashi Nagato. With the attacking ninja dead, the Flunky escapes, but Hitsuie is able to follow his tracks to an unlikely destination: The Tsukijō Wakigami Manor.
Merely a month since his resurrection, Hashinara Katamoto was slain in his guise as Katsusada Shishauezaemon. The Igamono ninja who committed the deed left him with the words, "Vengeance has been served," before being killed in turn.
Following the "Administrative Flunky's" tracks to the Tsukijō Wakigami Manor, the generals find that it has already been taken by Igamono. They enter the building's basement cautiously, and are confronted by a man who looks and sounds exactly like Katsusada Shishauezaemon. When questioned by the real Shishauezaemon, the impostor claims that he already spoke to the envoy from the Imperial Court. Among other misinformation, Matsutada Tadamatsu was told that the Hashinara attacked the Chōsokabe Clan on a personal slight, and that the Ashikaga Shogunate should mind its own business on threat of war. Before the discussion could progress any further, Fujibayashi Nagato attacked the impostor from the shadows and a full battle broke out between Hashinara elite and the lurking Igamono. Among their top priorities was the rescue of Tsukijō no Yumeno, tied to a post in the middle of the cellar, but this too was revealed to be a ninja fake. She was slain with the rest, but in the chaos, a single Igamono managed to cut off the real Katsusada Shishauezaemon's head. With the enigmatic words, "Vengeance has been served," the man accepted his death at the others' hands. As panic spread, Chōsokabe Morichika stole Matsumoto Ooawagaeri out of the chaos. With a few quick words, however, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was able to regain control of the situation, and the Igamono suffered a brutal defeat. After the battle, the real Tsukijō no Yumeno was found in a nearby barrel. She was unharmed, merely tied up, and corroborated the story that the fake Shishauezaemon had told them before.
Following his death at the hands of the Igamono, Katsusada Shishauezaemon (truly Hashinara Katamoto) is taken to Mikumari-jinja for a dark ritual of revival. Presiding over the ceremony is Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, who invokes rites passed down throughout the Matsumoto Clan for generations. It takes no fewer than three days, but Shishauezaemon breathes once again. He is greeted upon his awakening by Ichinomiya Karen, Chōsokabe Kanetsugu, Yamanaka Yukimori, and Nue. All are their for there own reasons, but ultimately for the fallen Daimyō's protection. Of surprise to Shishauezaemon is that Ooawagaeri's sword appears sentient, and speaks to him throughout the revival, but he makes the connection with the squirrel that had accompanied the boy and dismisses it. After being filled in on the situation with the Ashikaga Shogunate, the Ryūzōji, and the task burdened onto the Hashinara, he departs back to nearby Wakigami immediately.
Having been sent on an errand by his new friend Myoroguma-dōji to retrieve food from The Eternal Feast below, Maxim is briefly distracted by flashes of magic and the sounds of battle from somewhere lower on Mount Ōe. Descending to investigate, he witnesses a masked girl, no doubt Hashinara Yoshitakatomo doing battle with Oni ghosts in a graveyard basin at midnight. The princess-daimyō's companion, Kubokuma-dōnyo, notices him in turn, but does not recognize the foreigner without his imposing armor and helmet. Maxim decides not to reveal himself to Yoshitakatomo just yet, and instead merely returns to his errand, bringing a tray of meaty delights back up to Myoroguma's cave.
Though expecting a relatively uneventful afternoon, Tōdaisen Nobuhara instead finds that he has no memory of the past several hours. He finds his office in disarray, and it seems that someone has been going through his records. Testimony from Usutsuki indicates that it may have been him, with someone or something else in command of his senses. Concerned over this event, and its possible links to a similar situation with Shigeaki Fujino, Nobuhara contacts Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and the two attempt to solve the mystery together.
Retiring to her* underground laboratory, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo meets with Ashiya Dōman, Mary Lyn, and Katsusada Shishauezaemon to check on the progress of the artifact. While there, she* informs Dōman that Maxim and his companion Haures seemed to be on the trail of the Black Ocean Society, and that they had gone to speak with Abe no Seimei about binding Honda Tadakatsu. Dōman suggests that with his aid, Yoshitakatomo may be able to place Tadakatsu under her* control first, and by extension bring Seimei under her* power. Yoshitakatomo, however, is more interested in Tadakatsu than Seimei, and brings up the possibility of binding her demonic essence into a weapon as was done with Kukurihime. Yoshitakatomo dismisses such ideas for now, and instead focuses on the Artifact. Resembling a gauntlet, the item's metal plates are held together by gold cord, and an arcane rune is inscribed on each finger. Dōman assures her* of the potential to expand her* influence once the Mugen Gauntlet is completed, but Yoshitakatomo surely needs no reminding. Leaving Mary Lyn and the others to their work, she* retires upstairs and confirms with the castle's Sheele Usutsuki that Fubuki was in the castle at the time of Tōdaisen Nobuhara's possession. With that answered in the affirmative, she* prepares for her next act.
Hashinara Yoshitakatomo begins her* plot by casting a series of spells on her*self that render her* virtually undetectable to mortal beings. She* then calls upon Shigeaki Fujino to relocate to a spot just outside the Mōri Clan's arena in Shimonoseki. From there, Yoshitakatomo breezes invisibly past a few Oni guards, and enters the location where fallen combatants' bodies were seen being taken. Within, Yoshitakatomo chooses the right fork at first intersection. This leads her* to a storeroom, but her* quasidivine senses pick up a trail of blood leading down a side staircase apart from the main passage. Below, a solid stone door closed with a magical locks blocks her* progress, but she* simply casts a spell to become immaterial and phases through it. Inside is a ritual space, divided with a white veil, that is apparently used for the resurrection of those who fall in the tournament. Crystal gourds, some containing flickering souls, line the walls on shelves, and four stone slabs are aligned on the floor in the center. Only one slab is currently occupied by the body of the boy Shōta, who lies there as though forgotten. Yoshitakatomo decides not to act further in this room, but feels a gaze burrow into her* back as she turns to leave. Magically lifting the divider, she* finds a raised wooden platform and a wall covered in glaring white hannya masks with blood-red horns and piercing yellow eyes. Understanding this as some type of Oni cultural phenomenon, she* contacts Kubokuma-dōnyo, who informs her that the hannya mask symbolizes retribution and imminent death from some broken oath, as well as that so many in one place is probably seriously bad news.
As if drawn into a dream against their own volition, in a time and space not quite connected with what they know as reality, the heroes of the Hashinara Clan found themselves in a wasteland. Here, they were pitted against Deathlord☠Troxiom, a monstrous evil general in the midst of a ritual that would make him unstoppable. Alongside them was Date Masamune [Hero]. Queerer still for Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, he found himself to be Masamune, with his body only nominally under his own control and his mouth speaking words he did not intend. Together they battled against Troxiom in an attempt to rescue Katakura Kojūrō [Damsel], but their attacks had little effect on the bone-armored titan at the height of his power. Date Masamune (Hero) summoned his companions to the fight, his weapons glowing bright, but they did not heed his call. It was Ryūzaki Sanosuke's clever idea to write with a conjured pen on the story-scrawling scroll in the background, albeit with little effect. Maxim held the line and traded blows with Troxiom, but could not fell him. Aotsuki Tsukamoto called upon his companion Kagami to pelt their adversary with spheres of light, weak as they were. Still, such setbacks mattered little in the face of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo's incredible magic prowess. With an unseen grasp of mystic power, she* took the story scroll's magic for her* own, and became the effective god of this corner of The Dreamlands. Even by Yoshitakatomo's hand, the battle continued for some time. At the end, Deathlord☠Troxiom lay broken upon the ground. Date Masamune (Hero) was victorious, thanks to his stalwart companions, and Katakura Kojūrō (Damsel) was saved. With the threat gone, the dream dissolved, and our heroes were sent victorious back to the present world. Richer, perhaps, than when they entered, and with the clout of heroism to buoy them through the difficult times ahead. Indeed, it seems that Maxim took something more substantial with him, as the Deathlord's magnificent weapon, the Deathlord Buster, followed him into the waking world.
Investigating reports from Juntoku no Chūkyō regarding a mysterious merchant in Awa Harbor, the five generals of the Hashinara clan quickly found the racketeer in question. Clad from toe to tip in black cloth, with a white mask under his hat, the merchant spoke with a strange, grinding voice and moved with jerky twitches. For all this, he seemed friendly enough, and explained that he was selling poor-quality swords, failures, in bulk. Though these weapons were anything but poor-quality, Fubuki recognized them as being crafted by the same legendary smith notorious for making "Cursed" weapons. Not wanting any more of these blades distributed to the public, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo bought the whole cart, only to have another cart wheel itself out of the house behind the merchant, full to the brim with more blades. With the help of his Sheele, Aotsuki Tsukamoto recognized gears beneath the cart's wheels as the source of its self-locomotion. Karakuri, according to Yoshitakatomo, a kind of trick clockwork popular among the richer classes for entertainment. Meanwhile, Fubuki had transmuted into a tiny fox and stolen into the house. Inside were four more copies of the same merchant. Further inspection showed them to be more wood and gears under their robes than humans. Before Fubuki's investigation could continue, it was interrupted by a shower of bombs with various coy expressions painted on them from the rafters above. First a flashbang, then three smoke grenades that masked the disappearance of the merchants within. By this point, Maxim had burst through the door and was attempting to save the man he saw inside, but with little luck. A few moments and a powerful breath from Sanosuke dispelled the smoke, but the clockwork men were nowhere to be seen. Outside, Kagami pointed out that she'd seen a person on the roof, and Tama found a discharged bomb with a sullen face drawn on it. At the same time, the first merchant had suddenly changed its tune, confirming that yes, Yoshitakatomo actually could meet the smith behind those fine weapons. Fubuki teleported beneath the floor-boards, while Maxim followed by use of a trapdoor Sanosuke had pointed out during an investigation of the interior. Transforming her*self into a hat, Fubuki rested on one of the marching merchant's heads as they progressed through a tunnel until reaching a stone room with more carts of weapons. Also present, watching over them, was a mysterious creature comprising a cloak tapering to blades at the end and a mass of vaguely humanoid red ribbons under a death-marked mask. The Blade Wraith immediately spotted Fubuki even through the disguise and, while she* fought valiantly for a hat, the four "merchants" and creature were able to slay her* in short order. Before falling, Fubuki had sent a message to Yoshitakatomo covering the situation and the princess-daimyō was about to make her* own magical entrance just as Maxim reached the door. Both were too late to save Fubuki, but perhaps she* can still be rescued from true death if they act quickly enough. Standing in their way, though, were the Blade Wraith and four karakuri merchants, now revealed to be hideous clockwork dolls under the guise.
Leaving the ritual chamber beneath the Mōri Tournament Arena, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo continues her* exploration of the structure. Soon she* comes to the place where Mōri Motonari held a clandestine meeting with the Hashinara not long ago. Beyond that, Yoshitakatomo runs into another interloper coming the opposite direction. Still invisible, she* follows Yoshimi Masanori back the way she* her*self came not long ago, and watches as the gaudy Oni breaks into the ritual chamber and steals the body of Shōta. Curious, Yoshitakatomo follows the thief all the way back to some sort of transportation hub. The warding magic here destroys some of her* active magic, but not her* invisibility, and so Yoshitakatomo continues through a portal and into the depths of the earth somewhere far away. Seeking knowledge in the stones around, Yoshitakatomo casts a Telemetry spell, but is instead assaulted with visions of yellow fog and dead, grasping hands. This place, which she* later deduces is likely the Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine, has a powerful connection to Izanami-no-Mikoto. The Princess-Daimyō's quarry, Masanori, is here for a meeting with the Hayashi Clan, rulers of this mine. Zenuemon, son of the clan's elder, takes Shōta's body but insists that his father, Dōhan be present for payment. After some time of waiting, Dōhan arrives from Wakigami, a powerful horse-headed oni and another in bone armor heralding his arrival. He pays Masanori a fortune in silver koku for her work, and as she leaves, sets about preparing Shōta's corpse for some kind of infiltration of the Hashinara. Unbeknownst to him, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo watches all. The rest of the Hayashi family are ordered out of the room, including Zenuemon, who is asked to bring his sister in as he leaves. Although obviously chafed at having Jirouemon included when he is not, the younger oni agrees. Narinaga goes on to commend his physical body to his "idiot daughter's" care, while he transfers his soul into the boy's form instead. Though Yoshitakatomo senses an opportunity while the other mage's soul is transmigrating, she* does not take it and the ceremony goes on without incident. With one last warning to be careful, Narinaga, now wearing the body of Shota, vanishes in a burst of teletransportation. Much to Yoshitakatomo's amazement, Jirouemon immediately ignores her father's commands and leaves his body there to go follow the scent of food instead. The princess-daimyo takes the opportunity to transform herself into the guise of Shota and joins their discussion, chiding his "daughter" for acting so foolishly. Canceling the elder Hayashi's previous order, Yoshitakatomo deceives the rest of the clan into thinking that Narinaga's body is of no consequence. Instead, Jirouemon is ordered to accompany the Black Blade, for reasons that Dohan surely need not condescend to explain.
Moments after the death of Fubuki (in hat form), Hashinara Yoshitakatomo teleports the remainder of the party into the shadows of the cavern below. They arrive at the same time as Maxim, who departed first on foot. Although Yoshitakatomo has used a large amount of energy transporting the group, especially Kagami and Tama who are technically artifacts, the group wastes no time in engaging the mottled group of mechanical dolls. Despite its fearsome showing before, the Blade Wraith falls immediately to a single swing from Ryūzaki Sanosuke. While Maxim and Sanosuke engage the remaining mechanical men in combat, Aotsuki Tsukamoto instead attempts to retrieve Fubuki. Aided by the unseen hand of Munechika, he succeeds, and calls upon Amaterasu's light to bring the deceased hat back to life. Though difficult to damage and incredibly deadly, the karakuri men are no match for Sanosuke. Soon, each is reduced to a heap on the ground except for one, whose limbs Yoshitakatomo fuses to its sides to take captive for study. Following up on an unmooring sound called out by Kagami only moments before, the warriors rush through the back of the cave and outside to a small pier. A boat was here, but through the use of karakuri trickery and possibly magic, it has vanished at speed. Even the vessel's trail stops abruptly at a certain point in the water. Whomever was here and leading these creatures, presumably the same individual with the expressive bombs, has made their escape. However, the battle was not without its gains. The Cardinal Generals now find themselves in possession of upwards of six hundred quality, possibly cursed, katana. What's more, Maxim somehow regains his two-handed sword. How could that have gotten here? It will probably remain a mystery. Taking their captive, Yoshitakatomo discovers a final clue engraved into its body. "学天即". Something like "learning from the laws of nature". A maker's mark? Perhaps this, and the now-absent original merchant's promise to deliver swords to Wakigami Castle, may yet lead to the karakuri puppetmaster behind this whole fiasco.
Through some strange machinations of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo her*self, Fubuki is called to the Kō-Midare Workshop in Wakigami. There, she* encounters Jirōuemon, hiding poorly behind a barrel. It seems that Yoshitakatomo has somehow convinced the dull Oni girl to join Fubuki's own party, so she* coaxes the other out with a dumpling and welcomes her aboard before returning to the Black Galleon. Upon Fubuki's return, she* is greeted by Ryūhaku, who seems eager to begin his duties as first mate. His disappointment at being told that Watatsuki-dōnyo will be piloting the ship is tempered by Fubuki's explanation that he'll be in charge of manning the wheel when they travel upon the water. Due to the Date Clan still searching for Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, this is going to be their preferred method of travel for a time. After setting out bunks for the new arrivals, not least Phenex and Hagasaki Rinko, Fubuki explores further below decks to the cargo hold. Here, Aka no Kitsunebi and Taira no Tokuko are awaiting her* with a cabin already lightly furnished and ready for use. Seeking something to clean her* weapons with during her* downtime, Fubuki finds a cloth in the corner that reveals a fist-sized, glittering ruby in the shape of an uneven cube when unfolded. Something flickers in the heart of the gem, and it seems to warm to Fubuki's touch. Deciding prudently that now isn't the time to investigate cursed gemstones, she* creates a magical pedestal for the item and places it away before returning to her* meditation.
As his dinner with Kusuzaki Zensuke and Kusuzaki Astrid is winding down, Ryūzaki Sanosuke sends out a request to his secretary Trivia. It only takes moments for her to follow up, giving Sanosuke reports of two sightings of a mysterious, white-masked merchant in Shimonoseki, the very town he's currently visiting. Excusing himself, he gathers his willing companions, Ryūzōji Ryouka, Takenaka Hanbei, Takayama Ukon, and Byakurei, and makes to leave the restaurant. He hasn't made it far, however, before Sanosuke is intercepted by Kono Mikono, who is understandably distressed that her customer is leaving both without paying and without providing the evening's entertainment he promised. After dodging the proprietress, Sanosuke and his party regroup outside. Byakurei is sent to search the western parts of Shimonoseki where the merchant was seen last. Meanwhile, the rest of the group head east in the off chance that the lightning beast's search isn't successful. Before making it even a few blocks, however, Sanosuke is hailed by Byakurei, and told that the merchant is meeting with a woman wrapped in metal. Upon arriving at the scene, Sanosuke finds the white-masked merchant unabashedly and aggressively peddling his wares outside a building of Alexandrian architecture. The only thing preventing him access is Blanca Garcés de Navarre, a woman from the Crown of Castille and geared in full, heavy, western armor. Sanosuke attempts to deflect the merchant from her, but the mechanical man is oddly insistent that not only should the weapons be sold to the representatives from Alexandria, but that they be loaded onto their ships and taken back to their homeland. Eventually, with the surprising and timely appearance of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Sanosuke is able to convince the merchant that the Hashinara will handle movement of his wares onto the Alexandrian ships. Satisfied with this answer for now, the merchant departs, and Yoshitakatomo follows him, cloaked in a spell of undetectability. With those two gone, Sanosuke engages Blanca, Countess of Navarre in discussion about their respective lands. She is amiable enough once it becomes clear that Sanosuke is not seeking an audience with Phaenarete or trying to sell her anything. Indeed, Blanca eagerly falls into the role of teacher at Sanosuke's request, telling him much about the Alexandrian Dominance, Megas Alexandria, and the main forces that make up the Empire. Namely, Blanca's own Crown of Castille, The Enlightened Republic of France with its Twin Queens, Gewehrland with its advanced weaponry, and Mavrovlachia with its bloody devils and universal prisons. Sansouke listens politely, and Ukon seems unhealthily interested in the subject of prisons. Eventually, his group departs and they head back to The Tanuki's Glee. On the way there, the clattering of a cart is heard once again. After consulting with Yoshitakatomo, Sanosuke instructs Shigeaki Fujino to steal the cart of weapons away from the hapless mechanical merchant, then resumes his return to the restaurant.
Having followed a mysterious masked merchant from the Alexandrian Embassy all the way to the docks, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo bears witness as the automaton unloads another cart of weapons from a small ship presumably filled with the things. As the mechanical man trundles back into Shimonoseki, Yoshitakatomo boards the ship her*self and uncovers no fewer than nine more carts full of "defective" weapons. Further investigation reveals a lever which, when Yoshitakatomo throws it, sets the boat off on a predetermined course out of Shimonoseki. Content to wait and see where the small vessel goes on its own prerogative for now, she* sits and waits. After a time, however, it becomes clear that their destination is not a local one. The lights of Shimonoseki vanish into the distance as the ship enters open waters, heading vaguely on an easterly course. Deciding to spend her* time more productively, Yoshitakatomo casts a few spells that allow her* to stand upside-down on the bottom of the ship and pass through the small box she* finds below. Inside is an unexpected power source driving the vessel. A red-hot Buddha statuette, carved of simple stone, floats in the watertight container between two master gears, turning them through some ineffable, non-magical force. Consultation with the clan's priests only confirms that this is likely something on the religious side of things, rather than mystical. Event in progress.

Continuing her languid voyage across the northern seas of Japan, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo beheld with her* another presence. A suggestion of dark wings in the night, rubbery and silent. Remembering Kuranes' words about such a visitor, Yoshitakatomo allowed herself* to be picked up by a pair of strong black talons and borne by the Night-gaunt out of her own body and into the oneiric realm.
The second day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament arrived, with festivites starting early in the morning. Special considerations had been made for the Hashinara Clan this time, with their official box expanded enough to seat a multitude of generals. From Mōri Motonari's subtle glance, Ryūzaki Sanosuke gathered that this gesture may have been made largely for him. It made sense, given the sheer number of generals he had brought once again. A fair number of other events occurred simulatenously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 2
No sooner had Fubuki magicked the sword binding Kashirin away than yet another strange event interrupted the ill-fated Mōri tournament. The more keen-eared of those in the crowd noticed it first, and brought it to the attention of their allies. A low, whistling sound was steadily growing in volume as something approached the stadium at high speed. It was not Kashirin's prisonous sword, but rather a black spear shooting down from the heavens directly at Maxim.
After a boat ride that lasted nearly twelve hourse, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo finally drew near to her* destination. The self-navigating vessel had taken her from the northern seas of Japan and through undergound waterways to this place, a slick black dock that must be near the center of the country. A brigade of white-masked karakuri merchants were being tended by flying blade wraiths, groomed to enter the very vessel Yoshitakatomo had rode in on. She* exited to make room, but with her spells of obfuscation, had no fear of being discovered.
In Setsu Province, villagers, cityfolk, and bakeneko alike have been complaining of strange dreams. The legend of Momotarō plays out before their eyes every night, albeit with a unique spin. In this rendition, "Magical Momo" is an idol, and she defeats the evil oni with her cheerful antics and cute companions. Could this spectacle just be residual thoughts from that idol competition in Wakigami? That wouldn't explain why farmers who have never seen an "idol" in their lives are having the same dreams too. It's been a while since the Gauntlet of Games, where the Date Clan implored their counterparts in the Hashinara to investigate these "dream shards" popping up all over the country. Likely it's in response to the big portal up north near their capital. Regardless, the brave generals of the Hashinara were getting around to it, and their next target was that peach-colored rift halfway between Kaya and Osaka(settlement).
Hashinara Yoshitakatomo returned back to Wakigami Castle from the bowels of the earth and an enigmatic meeting with Gakutensoku. Upon her* arrival, Tōdaisen Nobuhara informed the princess-daimyō that not one, but three individuals awaited her earliest convenience to meet. This was not including General Baby Huey, who had recently returned from his great project in the Takeda lands. With characteristic poise, Yoshitakatomo stated that she* would meet all three of them at the same time.
With the sheer shock from seeing Akechi Mitsuhides soul devoured lessening, Mōri Motonari found the presence of mind to call the day’s activities to an end. She explained once again that board and accommodations would be prepared for those who wished it, and that some light entertainment would be held in the arena until the day’s evening.
Post-tournament, as the crowds began to leave the Mōri arena in Shimonoseki, several Hashinara generals, too, found interests elsewhere to pursue. Aotsuki Tsukamoto traveled to Mino Province with Saitō Dōsan to handle the leftovers from some of his previous days’ adventures. As well, Ryūzaki Sanosuke returned to Wakigami upon the request of Tōdaisen Nobuhara, to help him clean up a mess that had sprouted up in the generals’ absence. That left Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Maxim in the dwindling crowds.
When Akashi Kengyō departed, he left Maxim and Ikeda Tsuneoki face to face and blade to blade. Invoking his knightly honor, Maxim offered his opponent one last chance to put down his weapons and surrender. Tsuneoki, however, was too wrapped up in his vengeance, pinning all of the injustices he had faced on the Hashinara Clan and refusing to back down. There could be no other outcome. Maxim challenged Tsuneoki to a duel.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Saitō Dōsan were among the first to arrive in the meeting chamber of Owari Castle that had been set aside for their purposes. Maxim, too, was in attendance, and soon Hashinara Yoshitakatomo arrived with an unknown stranger in her* company. The opposite side of the wide, low table was filled with the Oda Clan’s greatest remaining representatives. Oichi took the head, her position cemented by her relationship to Oda Nobunaga, previous Daimyō of the clan. Beside her stood Shibata Katsuie, her bodyguard and a proponent of this meeting. Then, along the side were Ishida Mitsunari, Azai Nagamasa, and Mori Ranmaru. Only Nagamasa’s presence between the two others seemed to be preventing them from attacking each other right there. Petty complaints and snappish insults were tossed about above the weary-looking Azai Daimyō’s head.
While the invading demon, Raym, lurked beneath the meeting room table, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo took the opportunity to cast a minor spell of healing upon the fallen. This jolted them awake, mending some of their wounds, but Azai Nagamasa was still missing an arm and Ishida Mitsunari a leg, so they were yet in no condition to rejoin the battle. Even Kagami's supernatural powers of detection couldn't pinpoint their attacker's location, save that she was somewhere under the table, so Ryūzaki Sanosuke took the most obvious route forward. Slamming his foot down in a precise, powerful strike, he exerted just enough force to snap all four legs of the table and bring it down heavily onto the floor below. So measured was his strength that those standing on the table barely had to adjust their balance. Even so, the heavy wooden slab didn't seem to meet any resistance on the way down. Either Raym was no longer down there, or her powers of shadow extended further than they knew.
Following the wan figure of Akechi Mitsutoshi, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Takenaka Hanbei proceeded down two floors and across one building to the late Takayama Tomoteru's quarters in Owari Castle. The scene inside was a grisly one. Otherwise prim, neat, and clean, the room's center was now dominated by an enormous magical sigil, drawn in dried blood, with Raym's sigil in its center. Tomoteru's body was not present, and Mitsutoshi volunteered that yes, he had seen it removed, and no, he had not seen the old man's soul. That last brought the uncomfortable reminder to Yoshitakatomo that demons sometimes devoured human souls.
The Matsumoto Black Galleon loomed silently in the skies over Wakigami. From its deck, Fubuki cast a gust of wind to hurl her off the side on a direct course toward Wakigami Castle below. A bit of magic to alter trajectory, and the Black Blade touched down just beyond the castle gates, now closed for the night. The guards on duty gave a start at her* sudden appearance, but apparently had orders to let Fubuki through, as they made no move to stop the new arrival. Venturing into the familiar halls, Fubuki took a moment to inform Tōdaisen Nobuhara of her* intentions. The Daimyō had decreed that Matsumoto Hiegaeri, now Hiei, was to be given a test to measure the powers of his new body. As the Umbre Fox’s older brother*, Fubuki had undertaken that task. Hiei, of course, would not be pleased. Nobuhara offered no objection, instead recommending the use of the yard and asking them not to wake the sleeping generals if possible.
As Ryūzaki Sanosuke had promised, Shigeaki Fujino was quick to return with Shibai in tow. The arrival of this stranger was enough to pull Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Takenaka Hanbei away from their discussions of the looming war between Takeda and Uesugi. Having never met the Samurai Detective before, Yoshitakatomo began with some questions and introductions, learning that Shibai was a thief-taker with few solid affiliations. She was currently working a case in Nijō Castle and, in thanks for the Castle Lord's hospitality, had agreed when Sanosuke asked her to lend aid to this investigation.
With the aid of Shigeaki Fujino, a group consisting of Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Maxim arrived in Takayama Tomoteru's room at Owari Castle just in time to interrupt a strategic meeting between Takenaka Hanbei and Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. There had been whispers of a great meeting between the Hashinara Clan's top generals for some time now, especially with Maxim's sudden return from Gehenna. Fujino had taken it upon herself to make it happen, and so it was. Abe no Seimei offered some brief telepathic objections at the stealing away of Aotsuki, but he was able to reassure her, and the meeting could begin.
Lord Maxim's initial refusal to go to war on the side of the Takeda surprised Takenaka Hanbei. She voiced as much, suggesting that it was strange he would not want to wage battle against a god, particularly one he had as much to begrudge as Bishamonten. Maxim soon clarified that he would be willing to lend his aid in the coming battle, but it was a risk almost on par with what he had encountered in the Palace of the Firebird. As such, he needed more payment than just honor and good service to make it worth risking his men. In exchange for a large number of souls, quality notwithstanding, he would agree fight both the Uesugi and Izanami.
The summoning of Shax completed, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and her* generals, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Maxim, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke, were all left in the basement of Ōtsu Castle, Abe no Seimei’s sanctum. Their new, demonic guest was now under control, and so they were free to pursue other matters. A few things in particular seemed to be on Sanosuke’s mind, and he began by pursuing the idea of a sheele.
It was just after midnight in the basements of Ōtsu Castle and many a scattered gathering was coming to an end. Knight Commander Maxim, who had just been blessed with a new sheele, thanked Abe no Seimei before returning to the main sanctum. There, he introduced Evaine to Aotsuki Tsukamoto and company as his squire. What followed was a minor spectacle as Kagami wondered secretly why she was so small in comparison to Evaine, Tama, and even Rasaimoku. Aotsuki tried to explain that the reason was in Maxim's own bigness. It was only reasonable that he'd have a big sheele to match. This, however, only led to the little mirror asking Maxim how he managed to grow so large.
It was damp and cold under a gibbous moon when Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Aotsuki Tsukamoto were brought by Shigeaki Fujino to the entrance of Isonokami Shrine. This small temple was nearly built into the hillside at the top of a forbidding climb many miles south of Wakigami. A stone arch led within, showing a dilapidated but relatively clear interior, lit by some unknown source. Indeed, it seemed as though someone had been here recently to tidy up. Unbeknownst to them, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri indeed had.
Now that Shigeaki Fujino had transported herself away to a safe place, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke could battle the remaining Gye-lyong at their leisure. Those monstrous serpents were even now caught up in the coils of Yoshitakatomo's earthen magic, unable to move or raise their heads for the immense gravity pressing down on them. In such circumstances, it might not be necessary to fight at all. Such must have been the thoughts rushing through Sanosuke's head as he grabbed the stone ring that had fallen from the first Imugi's helmet and immediately made his way to the next closest.
Dawn rose on the third day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament, with the matches beginning at their characteristically punctual break of dawn. Mostly familiar faces dotted the crowd, with some missing and a few newcomers present. Of particular interest was a sour-faced, dour woman in reddish robes sharing the box right beside Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki who hadn't been there on days previous. A fair number of other events occurred simultaneously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 3
It was yet fairly early in the morning when those premier generals of the Hashinara Clan arrived at the doors of Yakisoba Yashiki. A heavy rain had begun to fall on their short journey over, clouds blotting out the sun overhead and casting an eerie shadow below. This effect seemed perfect for the dark Western mansion that now loomed before them. While not unheard of in international ports such as Shimonoseki, architecture like this was still very rare in Japan. The pervading feeling of the unnatural, the out of place, was only heightened by the glowing lights behind the mansion's crimson curtains and the infrequent flashes of lightning above. A sign just to the left of the door, obviously added as an afterthought, read: "焼きそば屋敷"
With all three pieces of the Imperial Regalia in hand and the blessed light of Amaterasu at his back, Aotsuki Tsukamoto returned to at Enryaku-ji where Hizashi awaited him. The current Herald of the Sun had requested that the other cardinal generals all be present as well. While neither Aotsuki nor the others quite understood why, they all accompanied him to delve once again into that painting which hung on the temple wall.
In the ancient halls of Wakigami Castle, Princess-Daimyō Hashinara Yoshitakatomo found her* usual dark workings interrupted by an unexpected visitor. Following Tōdaisen Nobuhara's summons, she* ascended to the ground floor and traversed the halls to the adviser's office. There, Yoshitakatomo found a tall, handsome man in gleaming white armor. From the crescent on his helmet to the signature eyepatch down to the tips of his shiny boots, this could only be one man: The White Blade of Hope: Date Masamune. Surely, though, Yoshitakatomo and her* allies had all seen Date⚔Masamune obliterated by Musashibō Benkei during the Mōri tournament. This new Masamune's presence merely confirmed their suspicions that something was amiss in the identity (or identities) of the Date Clan Daimyō.
Somewhere in the myriad halls of Wakigami Castle, Princess-Daimyō Hashinara Yoshitakatomo received word that her* two retainers, Hosokawa Gracia and Matsumoto Hiei had traveled to Ise Grand Shrine to await her* arrival. Before leaving herself, however, the many-lived necromancer had some telepathic business to manage. The reports of a Hound of Tindalos hunting one of her* allies had troubled Yoshitakatomo. She* now reached out to Matsumoto Ooawagaeri to clarify the details of what had transpired.
While Hashinara Yoshitakatomo made arrangements for a facsimile of herself* to be present at the Mōri tournament, her* true self was stepping through a portal, beyond the wall of sleep, and into the Dreamlands. Accompanying her* were retainers Hosokawa Gracia and Matsumoto Hiei, both of whom owed their current bodies and lives to Yoshitakatomo's immense mystical power. After traveling through the space between planes, the place where the three arrived was not so different from many vistas found on Earth. Long grass ran up to thigh-height on a short cliff overlooking the ocean. Behind them, an immense snow-capped mountain poured itself into the sky, shining under the midday sun. The air was fresh and tinged with salt. A coast, perhaps an island, familiar save for the strange fruits sprouting from nearby bushes and trees. This was not Hosokawa Gracia's first venture into the dream world. Previously, she had headed an expedition to establish a forward camp in this very land, which mirrored Japan's approximate geographical position on the other side of the oneiric barrier. According to Gracia, this was the Isle of Oriab. It was largely uninhabited save for the major port of Baharna on at the island's northern point. Fortunately, the Baharnans were friendly toward their cause, and had previously allowed Gracia to set up an outpost not far from their city. If they wanted to travel to another major city, such as Dylath-Leen or Celephaïs, chartering a vessel from Baharna would likely be the best option.
While making preparations for her* foray into the Dreamlands, Princess-Daimyō Hashinara Yoshitakatomo received a message from a loyal retainer: Ryūzaki Sanosuke. The Silver General had been thinking of late about the man they'd met at Himeji Castle, the man who claimed to be that fortress' architect. Other avenues of investigation, however, had revealed the true planner to be one Akamatsu Norishige, now long deceased. It was Sanosuke's hope that Yoshitakatomo could turn her* dark magicks toward communicating with Norishige. Through such original necromancy, they might be able to shed light on this remaining mystery. While not against the idea, Yoshitakatomo conceded that ancient Norishige's soul was no doubt in the clutches of Izanami-no-Mikoto, deep below in Yomi. Even the great necromancer's magic could not reach that far. Not without help, at least. Sanosuke's suggestion was that she* might find assistance at Miwa-myōjin, that grand temple to Izanami north of Wakigami.
There on the coast of the Isle of Oriab, now-undead Hashinara Yoshitakatomo finished reminiscing over the strange series of events which had led her* to this point. She* and her* companions Hosokawa Gracia and Matsumoto Hiei had already noticed the Black Galleon Slavers on the other side of the ridge, going about their horrid business unaware that their doom gazed upon them from not a hundred feet away. The odious Men of Leng had more than a few things in their possession to interest the Princess-Daimyō. Foremost among these was the Gug, a monstrous four-limbed titan bound by chains and a queer symbol carved into the metal plate bound around its neck. Further off, something in a wooden cage flitted around agitatedly right next to two rows of enslaved Baharnans. That last became a political issue the moment Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, in his guise as Fubuki, arrived with Sothy and her stranded fellows. It was finally time to fulfill the promise of bringing them back to Baharna, but the presence of these captives complicated matters. Fortunately, with the arrival of a host including Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ka-ten Agni, Alice of Hearts, Aka no Kitsunebi, Taira no Tokuko, and finally two representatives, Sasaki Kojirō and Oyama Hikari from the Silver Meteor Storm, the Hashinara were well-equipped to face anything that the Slavers might bring against them.
Under the escort of Steersman Leaf's longship, the Hashinara Clan's temporary Baharnan crew finally pulled their stolen Black Galleon into the great port of Baharna. While the surrounding cluster of clay and stone houses was certainly more a city than a town, all of Baharna's activity seemed to be concentrated around the docks. Several other vessels were already settled here and a variety of exotic-looking goods were being peddled right at the water's edge. Some distance above them, a mighty spyglass, easily the size of an average house, stared down at them like an enormous glass eye.
Despite the horrific revelation stretched out before him in the depths of Wakigami Castle, Knight Commander Maxim waited patiently for the team of "mystical experts" to arrive and examine what looked very much like a portal to hell. All the while, the languid, blindfolded youth within the chamber worked away at his anvil, striking red-hot metal methodically, apparently forging by touch alone. Finally, reinforcements were at his back. Maxim felt a chilly presence fill the air as first one, then a trio more red-skulled and black-robed Deep Wraiths glided out from the labyrinth. They were followed by Albionite wizard Mary Lyn, who greeted her countryman with a terse nod. Not to be left out from such a momentous discovery, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo herself* was in attendance last. Although personally far away, beyond the Veil of Sleep, Yoshitakatomo could act through her* Sheele, Hashinara Kiyowara, as though it was her* own body.
With their business concluded at the port, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Fubuki, and their retinue were led, as promised, to lodgings prepared for them in the heart of Baharna. This building, unnervingly named "The Thing in the Attic" proved to be a repurposed tavern. A small suite of rooms in the back provided almost, but not quite, enough room for each of their companions to have their own bed.
As the group led by Hashinara Yoshitakatomo left the Baharnan Library, they were cautioned first by Chhean the Curator not to take any books off the premises. That put an end to Fubuki's study of the Baharnan language, but she* had established a small foundational vocabulary by that point. Aotsuki Tsukamoto had his own reservations in leaving as well. He'd seen Oyama Hikari eyeing that Only Accurate Map of the Dreamlands so tantalizingly displayed in the center of the hall. So far he'd been able to deflect any thefts, but Aotsuki eventually decided that if Hikari wanted to tangle with Chhean and the fierce-looking Dragon skeleton under her contol, that was their business. Leaving that towering canyon of books behind them, the three set off on the short road to the Ruins of Tyrhhia.
In the port of Baharna, young lord Aotsuki Tsukamoto watched Fubuki depart with Jorani the Whitesmith. They still had to return to The Thing in the Attic to deliver the other Wamp corpses, but for now it seemed they had some time to spare while their ally attended a lesson in smithing. No sooner had Fubuki passed from sight than Aotsuki received a mental message from Abe no Seimei. Even telepathically her voice sounded strained, as though she was about to deliver bad news.
With their three trophies piled into a cart, pulled by the ever-helpful Sable Fox, the team led by Hashinara Yoshitakatomo made their way back to Baharna. Their path took them along the side of Lake Yath. On the trip to Tyrhhia, this had been a fairly unremarkable walk. On this return trip, however, they had company to entertain them.
In a different place, clearly divided from the events of Tsuwamono, there is a table. It's unclear how many people are sitting at this table, cast in the shadow of the waving cherry blossoms above. Their figures are hazy, as if seen through a thick fog. Sometimes they reach out and grasp a cup of sake, filled from the great dish in the center, and raise to their lips. The pale liquid shimmers in phantom sunlight. Many drink, more of the liquor vanishes, but there always seems to be more to go around. Even watching the figures so partake, their features cannot be discerned. Each face is a confusion of colors and half-glimpsed familiarity. All, that is, except one.
Things in the Earthrealm seemed to have settled down. At least, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo could no longer sense such a powerful disturbance through her* avatars. Aotsuki Tsukamoto remained eager to return to his lands, and Fubuki was just returning from her* smithing lesson with Jorani the Whitesmith. There was little now to keep those generals of the Hashinara from making their way back to The Thing in the Attic. There, Kravann awaited their last delivery of Wamp hides. Fubuki sent telepathic word ahead, asking Taira no Tokuko to inform the merchant that they were on their way.
On the deck of their artificially-sunken ship, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Fubuki looked across the bridged abyss at the treasure which had brought them there. Soon joined by Aotsuki Tsukamoto, the three pondered just how they were going to plunder that opulent chest. Fubuki's magic had created an air bubble within which to act even this far below the sea. And yet, the bounds of that same bubble seemed much more narrow than when they'd descended. Perhaps it was the water pressure this deep, or perhaps it was the work of something more sinister.
Not far from the coast of Oriab, traveling upon the Dreamsea, the Hashinara Clan's Black Galleon had just unwittingly brought another soul on board. Perhaps not completely unwittingly. It was a fair educated guess, based on the aura of Sin magic surrounding it, that the bottle Oyama Hikari retrieved from The Sunken City contained a Demon. That didn't stop the little treasure hunter from popping it open and letting the thing loose. Coalescing forth from a cloud of heady, pinkish mist, this demon was quite unlike any they'd encountered before. With smooth skin and a slender, feminine frame, she would have passed for human if not for the purple tinge of her skin and the ten thick tentacles that constituted her body from the waist down. The demoness didn't seem hostile, at least not immediately. Instead, she appeared overjoyed. With a triumphant shout in the language of fiends (Hebrew?), she beamed at the assembled crew around her, gaze lingering on each in turn. Fubuki, who had made something of a study of demonic languages recently, caught something about "finally being free."
Within a discreet meeting room at Wakigami Castle, Ryūzaki Sanosuke waited. Beside him, seated in awkward silence, was the man who still possessed Shōta's body. Rather, Dōhan was well and truly trapped within the lanky youth's form. This was a situation which Sanosuke felt his lord, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo could easily take advantage of, so he had brought the possessed boy here. And yet Yoshitakatomo had still not arrived. It was nearing midnight now, and she* was still on her* journey in the Dreamlands, despite many an assurance that she* would return soon.
With those meddlesome Cardinal Generals on their way back to Earth, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo was finally free to ponder this foothold in the Dreamlands. Her* loyal retainer, Hosokawa Gracia stood by her* right hand. On Yoshitakatomo's left, Carmilla, the madwoman she'd* found in this very land, gazed emptily into the middle distance. There was much to do if the Hashinara Clan would establish a foothold here on the Isle of Oriab. This work Yoshitakatomo began in earnest. First, she* wove magic to speak to the ground itself, uncovering a few useful deposits of copper and ore. From the sheer rock cliffs of Mount Ngranek in the distance, it seemed stone would be no obstacle. Still, Yoshitakatomo had no desire to despoil the natural beauty of this land. Instead, she* ordered that the necessary resources would be brought through the portal. Around that gate between worlds, they would build a shrine to Omoikane to mirror Ise Grand Shrine on its other side.
It was the darkest hour of the night; the perfect time for ninja business. It was just such ninja business which drew the five Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan to Iga. For some time, Fujibayashi Nagato had been working here to eliminate the remnants of the resistance group known as Igamono. With them out of the way, and Hattori Hanzō dead, there would be nothing standing in the way of Nagato becoming head Jōnin of the Iga Ninja. Her first order of business promised to be a formal alliance with the Hashinara Clan. Therefore, it behooved the clan to lend their aid in this final confrontation. The Igamono, staunch traditional independents, would never allow the Iga Ninja to formally ally with a clan. They were a minority now, but enough families still backed them that they could prove a threat if left alone. One such family, led by Iganozeki Butsugai, had agreed to speak with Nagato tonight. Canny and with plenty of shinobi experience to draw upon, she expected a trap. Therefore, having five of the most powerful individuals in Japan at her back was a great reassurance.
Following the day's events, there was quite a bit on Ryūzaki Sanosuke's mind. He wanted to pay a visit to Sarutaba Chino, and there was the matter of his newest prisoner, one Tomo Sukesada from the matter with the Igamono. If what Fujibayashi Nagato had told him was true, it would not be wise to leave her unaddressed for too long. Before any of that, however, Sanosuke decided to complete his original task: delivering a case of Absodium to the researchers in Wakigami Castle's basement.
The moon was right and spirits were high at the clearing on the coast of Oriab now known as Queen's Landing. For now, for Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, that was enough. Faithful Tōdaisen Nobuhara had sent out word that pilgrims were welcome to settle this corner of the Dreamlands. They would no doubt begin to trickle in over the next few days. Then, colonization could truly begin. At the moment, Yoshitakatomo's interest was absorbed by the madwoman she'd found wandering the shores. Or, it should have been. Something else had caught her attention; a shadow a bit blacker than the rest of the night around it. The thing extended a rubbery claw, and Yoshitakatomo put a name to its horned skull: Night-gaunt.
At the foothold Hashinara Yoshitakatomo had achieved in the Dreamlands, the Princess-Daimyō began to put her* plans into motion. First, she* called upon loyal adviser Tōdaisen Nobuhara and ordered him to send Ashiya Dōman across. The malefic onmyōji was prepared for such an order, and would join Queen's Landing through the portal at Ise Grand Shrine. Then, Yoshitakatomo's thoughts turned to the Black Galleon sitting listless in the waters off Oriab's shore. If that vessel was to be of any use, she* would require a crew. A quick message to Nobuhara had to be canceled, as Yoshitakatomo was reminded that the elders of Baharna had already offered them a crew. She would but need to travel to the port city and request the aid of Phiruna the Navigator. Soon thereafter, Ashiya Dōman stepped through the portal. He took in the sea air, black wraith bodies floating around him. This was far less like actually dreaming than he had expected, but the taste of magic in the air suggested a fertile place for his work. With only a short greeting to Yoshitakatomo, Dōman got to work.
Starting with the dawn, the Mōri Martial Arts Tournament once again saw a fine turnout from all across the land. Either all these generals had some manner of quick transportation, comparable to the Hashinara Clan's teleportation network, or they were staying in Shimonoseki for the duration. Perhaps a combination of both. The morning proceeded with a series of intense fights and only a single death. Once all was done, Fubuki, Honda Tadakatsu, Maxim, and Momo would be advancing to the independent semifinals. Accounts of their matches can be found elsewhere. During and after the bouts, however, a few other events of interest were happening throughout the crowd.
On the beaches of Oriab, Princess-Daimyō Hashinara Yoshitakatomo stepped back to admire her* handiwork. She* and Ashiya Dōman had been putting their many hands to work for the better part of the morning. Now, as shards of complex metal glinted in the rising sunlight, it seemed well worth it. Those books on engineering from the Baharnan library were proving well worth it. As for the rest of the growing camp, they steered well clear of the beach where Yoshitakatomo was conducting her* Gug-based experiments. Instead, a small but busy temporary settlement had sprouted up on the camp above. That missive sent out by Tōdaisen Nobuhara had produced its desired effect. Now, a small but steady trickle of brave pioneers from Japan flowed through the portal to Oriab on this side. By their effort, Queen's Landing was slowly but steadily developing into a community.
On the shores of Oriab, within the new castle which marked Queen's Landing on the map, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo paced back and forth. Her* pondering was interrupted, quite suddenly, by the approach of a young foot soldier. This ashigaru was almost indistinguishable from the other brave souls who had chosen to join the Hashinara on this side of the portal. And yet there was something different about this one. The sharp cut of his jaw, the confidence which invigorated his bearing, and the flare in his eyes all spoke to this foot soldier being just a bit more than his peers. Perhaps he would even be worthy to have the Princess-Daimyō learn his name. So wrapped up in her* consideration of the man was Yoshitakatomo that she* almost didn't hear the news he'd come to deliver. The horses and procession had been prepared for their journey to Baharna.
Albeit not without cost, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo had succeeded in escorting Phiruna the Navigator to Queen's Landing. Now the Black Galleon that listed outside their bay would have its captain. More, Yoshitakatomo could move on to the next step of her* grand design.
Following her* impromptu encounter with Sasaki Kojirō, Daimyō Hashinara Yoshitakatomo proceeded down the Baharnan docks toward her* target. The path to Phiruna the Navigator was separated by a stone palisade bordering the port proper. Such an obstacle proved little difficulty to one such as Yoshitakatomo, however. Walking up, over, and across the wall, she* soon stood behind the windswept captain as he gazed out to sea.
Now that she* had confirmed Kurayume with her* own eyes, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo called Ashiya Dōman and the Three Named Men to the vessel's deck. These she introduced as Kurayume's new brood. She would protect them, just as she had the Galleon's previous crew. Although it was clearly not easy for her, Kurayume agreed. Protecting such fragile creatures as these measly humans would not be easy, but her loyalty to the Hashinara Clan offered no alternative.
It was time for the final match; that which would determine the victor of the clan portion of the Mōri Clan Tournament. The Hashinara Clan would be facing the Ryūzōji Clan and each of the Cardinal Generals had managed to make it to watch. All, that is, except Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. Instead, the Daimyō had a sobering announcement for her* generals.
Following the release of the Plague of the Flowering Mind in Queen's Landing, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo was approached by Ashiya Dōman. Although he could not boast the direct link to Omoikane afforded to Yoshitakatomo, he was wise enough to know that a true catastrophe had just befallen their settlement. This was the work of an angry god. Fortunately, Dōman himself had protections in place which prevented him from suffering the affliction. Yoshitakatomo ordered those who were affected to be separated and for the portal to Earth to be closed. Still, it would be difficult to tell who was a vector of the plague. She* would need to hurry to the Caves of Life as the avatar had told her* and return with a cure.
Hashinara Yoshitakatomo awoke in near-total darkness. It was difficult to say how much time had passed. Still, the sun's rays were still bright in the one window illuminating the room. Time passed strangely sometimes, in the Dreamlands. Perhaps that was why Yoshitakatomo felt so refreshed, as though she* had enjoyed a full night's rest. Her* magical reserves, too, were somewhat replenished. In the shadows across from the Daimyō, a red-masked figure stirred. It was one of Ashiya Dōman's Deep Wraiths. As an extension of Dōman himself, it had taken up post here so that the old onmyōji would know when his master was awake. The creature spoke haltingly, as though not used to having only one mouth with which to communicate. From it, Yoshitakatomo learned that the people of Queen's Landing had not been idle.
Under the pervasive sound of running water, the Hashinara expedition took stock of their situation. Despite Matsumoto Ooawagaeri's best efforts, only five of them had made the transition into the Caves of Life. Those were the Black Blade himself, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Oyama Hikari, and Umashiashikabihikoji. What's more, a path of melting shadows in the corner of their entryway had just detached itself from the darkness and began speaking to them. This creature, for it did seem to be a humanoid form of some sort, claimed herself to be a steward of these caves, appointed by Omoikane. She first thought the interlopers to be thieves, then became disappointing when Yoshitakatomo asserted that they were not. Thieves, at least, would be something interesting. Mere acolytes of the Goddess would no doubt fail to hold this steward's interest. It was her duty to help them find what they sought but, as bored by the centuries as she was, the guiding shadow would not give up her secrets so simply. Instead, she invited the Hashinara group to participate in a game. A riddle. Should they solve it, she would give them her aid without hesitation. This seemed perhaps unnecessary, but it was at least in line with the ways of the Goddess of Secrets. Yoshitakatomo agreed to the terms.
The list below comprises a record of Objects of Interest (OI) discovered during the Hashinara Clan's first expedition into the Caves of Life. OI1, OI2, and OI5 are considered to pose a low level of risk. OI3 is confirmed to be a high-risk object. OI4's risk level remains unknown. List compiled automatically by: Askaenos, Servant of Mēn To be delivered to Oyama Hikari at first possible opportunity.
Darkness. Emptiness. The comfort of water's embrace. In the distance, a sole sound. Rushing. Echoing. We wait, unmoving. The stillness is not unlike death. Yet we have not died, will not die. We share a purpose, have waited an age to fulfill it. Now, the time is at hand. The acolyte approaches. Sworn to Omoikane. His being has been sundered, split into four by Zo-Kalar. Trapped in the body of a scavenger. The silent voice of decay courts him, but he does not listen.
Champion, I imparted a lot of information to you the last time we met. Our Lady is one of Forbidden Knowledge, but even forbidden words must be recorded somewhere. It is my hope that this list helps you, and the Soon Champion of Chaos if he wishes, to keep your enemies in mind as we begin Her work in the Dreamlands. "Your friend," Osogami Wakatsu
The Night-gaunt made no sound as its rubbery black skin split under her blade. Soundlessly, it fell away in two clean halves. Kojirō tried not to look too closely at the monster's remains, splattered now across the ground. There wasn’t anything in there she wanted to see. As her gaze lingered to the right, however, it came across what looked to be a cave burrowing deep into the mountain’s surface.
After the eventful match between Maxim and Momo, yet before Mōri Motonari's Yashiki Summit, a small sliver of time was almost lost to the ages. Yet events did transpire during that sliver, and they are no less worthy of our attention. Let us consider them now...
At the behest of Daimyō Mōri Motonari, many of the leaders from today's tournament arrived at Yakisoba Yashiki for lunch and a summit. Their topic of conversation was none other than the cataclysm which had broken the sky at the tournament but a few hours ago, and the creatures it had released into the world. Given that this was an event which could no doubt affect all of Japan, Motonari was disappointed to see how few leaders had opted to attend. Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the current Shogun, was at least in attendance, with her adviser Chitosemaru standing slyly behind her. Also present were Aotsuki Tsukamoto of the young Aotsuki Clan and the many other heads of the Hashinara hydra. Even Niiro Tadatsuru, Daimyō of the roguish Shimazu was lazily kicking her feet up on the table, with some manner of Wani whispering advice into her ear. No representatives of the Hōjō or Takeda arrived, however, and nor did anyone from the Alexandrian detachment visiting the city. It would have to do. As Hospodar Mikhail finished writing down their orders in his red velvet notebook and vanished to the kitchens, Motonari began the meeting.
After Mōri Motonari's Yashiki Summit, yet before the eventful match between Maxim and Fubuki, a small sliver of time was almost lost to the ages. Yet events did transpire during that sliver, and they are no less worthy of our attention. Let us consider them now...
Somewhere in Japan, through a hidden portal deep below an ancient shrine, a long-departed evil returned once again. Hashinara Yoshitakatomo led Carmilla through the gateway by the hand as she breathed her first lungful of Earth's air. The white-haired maiden's expression did not change. Her eyes flitted to and fro, as though seeing a myriad of images the daimyō was not fit to witness. However, she followed along with only the barest of urging from her guide.
After the Mōri Tournament finally concluded, the Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan found themselves pulled away for a spate of administrative tasks across their domains. It seemed as though an interminable time passed. Was it days? Weeks? Months? Half an entire year? No, it was but a single hour. At the end of such, each general received an urgent communication from Tōdaisen Nobuhara; a call for a meeting in person at Wakigami Castle. These events were growing less common as Shigeaki Fujino's mental network became more and more the norm for the Hashinara Clan. It followed, then, that whatever Nobuhara summoned them for was likely to be of great import.
Time passes... Morning? I graze and trot around the estate, then graze again. It is Brother's turn to run free on the island "above," so I must remain here in case Master Nodens has need of me. Black on black is not only boring, but unappetizing too. The Master feeds me a black apple, and I pretend to enjoy it for his sake. Tomorrow will be my turn to run free, and I need only wait until then. Top three words: Dull. Restless. Black.
Ganzo Sada, the Named Man, stood upon the deck of Hashinara Kurayume and watched a brilliant tapestry of unfamiliar stars wheel over his head. He was on sea watch duty tonight. In truth, anything which came from those black depths, arisen perhaps from the rotting Sunken City far below, would be too dangerous for him to handle alone. In such a case, he could at least perhaps send warning to the rest of Queen's Landing before being devoured or worse. However, Ganzo Sada was not about to let the bleak reality of this dangerous place get to him. The stars were so very beautiful, and he loved to watch the mysterious lights which flickered across the Dreamsea's horizon, hinting at places and people yet unknown.
Upon the starlit decks of Hashinara Kurayume, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo's training of Ganzo Sada was proceeding as well as it ever had. That is to say, poorly. Perhaps awoken by the lose threads of magic being thrown around, Zhyrgal wriggled out of the Daimyō's pocket and helped herself to some. Slurp.
The attention of many greater beings was upon the heavens, where Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Ryūzaki Sanosuke were engaged in their first conflict with the Arbiters. However, these were not the only events of note transpiring at this time. Back on Earth, a number of stories were continuing, or just taking their first steps...
Standing within his forbidding laboratory deep beneath Wakigami Castle, one fact was eminently obvious to Katsusada Shishauezaemon: there was much to be done. While his "true body" was dallying in the Dreamlands, it was again up to the emerald-cloaked adviser to roll up his sleeves and see to the functioning of their Clan. "Nobuhara, what reports have we received regarding the war between the Uesugi and Takeda?
Against the looming threat of the Unstoppable Holiday Force, Yukijirushi Santazaemon, the brave Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan gathered up their presents and hopped on the Holiday Express heading north. Perhaps in the snowy fields of Hokkaido they could find some peace. But it was not to be. That monstrous champion of Oyamatsumi, Santazaemon, caught up with the speeding train and violently inserted himself into the last car. It was up to the Cardinal Generals and what allies they had been able to gather on such short notice to hold the monster off. If they could just survive until the Christmas Tree at the front of the train gathered enough Holiday Cheer... It was the last hope they had for a jolly Christmas.
