Shimonoseki
Bustling International Port
A dense, sprawling city nestled on the northern shore of Hagato Province. Shimonoseki's size and relative ease of access from the West have made it an attractive trading and diplomatic hub for foreign nations, particularly those that make up the Alexandrian Dominance. As one of the settlements most affected by the "Civilized Oni" movement of recent centuries, Shimonoseki has a largely human population but a significant and growing oni demographic as well. When the issue of oni clans is discussed in the Imperial Court, this city is often pointed to as an example of the two races living, and even flourishing side by side.
The now-fallen Ōuchi Clan held power over Hagato and Shimonoseki for many years. In late 1559, a visit by Ryūzaki Sanosuke halted a subtle Mōri Clan plot to usurp control of the capital. Not long later, however, Mōri Motonari took control of the province by force, bringing it under her control and executing the remaining Ōuchi heirs. She then chose the city to host the Mōri Martial Arts Tournament, a fantastic test of combat prowess attended by warriors the nation over. Motonari's decision to host the event in Shimonoseki might have been a snub toward the Hashinara Clan for their attempted meddling. More likely, it was chosen for its international ties in order to woo diplomats from Alexandria.
First-time visitors to Shimonoseki will no doubt want to see the expansive port, where the hulls and masts of exotic ships form a thin forest lining the shore. Also of interest are several landmarks foreign and local both, such as The Tanuki's Glee and the Alexandrian Japanese Embassy.
