Shu'Yun Zhen
Some things are understood, practiced, or found in all of the territory.
Gongs Ring and can be heard throughout the entire mountain range at 4 intervals throughout the day: Dawn, Midday, Dusk, and Midnight. When this is heard, everyone is to be silent for 30 minutes, and as still as possible. Even the most remote of villages practice this.
Throughout the narrow valleys and bases of the mountains of Zhen are villages on the path. Communities that support the monasteries through farming, herbalism, mining, and minimal craftsmanship. It is from these villages and their deep respect for the monks that new monks find their way into the Pilgrimage to Enlightenment.
Meals in Shu'Yun Zhen are modest and shared. Monks eat only once a day, and civilians twice. The diet is simple and balanced.
Temples throughout Shu'Yun Zhen have teleportation circles allowing travel for trade to Sanctia and other temples. They are only accessible to those seeking trade (to and from Sorrow's Tithe ) or higher-ranking monks requesting travel within the land.
Punishments in the state are silent and symbolic, not brutal and loud. Thieves may find their hands bound and be made to stand barefoot in the cold. A liar may be assigned a year of silence. Offenders walk free, but carry the shame of visible reprimand. In the most extreme of cases, offenders may have parts of their bodies removed, arms cut off, tongues branded or bifurcated, or eyes blinded. A lifelong forced imbalance and permanent spiritual distress as punishment for forcing this upon others. Death is never an option, as it is a release or evasion of consequences.
