Marcilla Beauregard

"Each of us has been thrown into this confusing, dangerous world, with no proper reasons as to why. Some of us are not even born in the correct shapes or sizes. But with this uncertainty comes a truth that I shall always live by: where there is spirit, where there is a soul, there is hope. Always." - Marcilla Beauregard
Marcilla "Marcy" Beauregard was an Alois woman who lived in the Fifth Era. Born in a body that was not congruent with her gender identity, much of her youth and young adulthood was spent trying to solve this problem. In 8076, with a group of heroes, she journeyed to Aurora Point, where she saved her sister, Clara, and her uncle, Vihoaginio, from death at the hands of Malevolence 5. Later, she established a temple to Deonea on Aurora Point.

Early Life

"My childhood was a sea of instability. It's funny; I only ever saw my father once or twice a year, and he was the rock that got me through it all. Even after he died. I still think about him, every day." - Marcilla Beauregard
Beauregard was born in 8041 on her family's cattle ranch in the Northern Commons. She was the daughter of Hanna Beauregard, her mother, and Henrio Beauregard, her father. During her childhood, she struggled with gender dysphoria, as her assigned gender was not congruent with whom she actually was.   Beauregard's father, a soldier fighting against the Makovai dwarves in the The Twenty-Year War, was not often around, and died in the war's final year. As she began her teenage years, her mother perished of disease, and her father's brother, Hoagy, moved in to take care of her and her sister, Clara.   As she became an adult, Beauregard's relations with her uncle and sister were not good. Clara ridiculed her for dressing as was expected of a woman, with Beauregard sometimes wearing her clothes. Clara was generally opposed to her sister's gender identity. Hoagy, meanwhile, was unable to healthily mourn his brother's death, and took out his frustrations on his youngest niece.   Beauregard also became wrapped up with a local criminal group that harassed the Laframbois Family, which owned nearly all of the land in the area. Though most of the crimes they committed were minor and went unnoticed by the family, they at one point stole a group of prized stallions from the Laframbois stables.

Journey to the Lands Beyond

"It was liberating, to be out on my own. But in all honesty I had no idea what I was doing. One of my greatest comforts, aside from what I found in The Lands Beyond, was the realization that no one else really did either." - Marcilla Beauregard
With the Laframbois close to killing her, and unable to tolerate the mistreatment from her sister and uncle any longer, Beauregard ran away from home at age seventeen. She took her father's Thunderbird-Class Miniature Cannon, a weapon that she would treasure for much of her life. She wandered westward, searching for individuals that would be accepting of her gender identity. Beauregard also searched for magic users that would be willing to alter her body so that she would be more frequently perceived as a woman, but everyone she found could only offer services that would alter her body for a few days at most.   During her travels, Beauregard interacted with a number of dwarvish individuals. She quickly let go of the prejudices she had carried over from her father, and made friends with some of them. One of these friends was a Red Makovai man named Skommed, who lived in the Western Commons. She met Skommed while protecting Foster's Rest, a backwater Trebai village, from bandits. Skommed acted as a mentor for her, and through him, she met a woman slightly younger than her, but with very similar gender identity struggles, Scotta Malcatha.   Hearing legends of the Temple of Deonea, a legendary goddess of women and femininity, the pair journeyed together to the Lands Beyond, where the temple was said to be located. Before they left, Skommed gave her an old sword of his, which would later become one of Beauregard's most treasured possessions. The two traveled via airship, with a misfit crew that had stolen the vehicle from the Trebai Ascendancy. The group sustained many adventures together, and eventually Beauregard and Malcatha made it to the temple. After ridding the temple of an evil presence, the Deonea altered the bodies of the two women to match their gender identity.

Return to Home and Subsequent Adventures

“I’ll explain exactly what I’ve asked you to do for me. We’ll be travelling to Aurora Point, an island off the coast of here. I’ve lost contact with my sister, and our uncle, who live there." - Marcilla Beauregard, speaking with aides shortly before her expedition to Aurora Point
Once they returned from the Lands Beyond, Beauregard assisted Malcatha in defending her home village in Ren Berig lands from an enemy tribe. Beauregard left to return to the Northern Commons after this, but the two stayed in touch and frequently visited each other.   Beauregard returned to her family's old ranch, unsure of what reaction to expect from her family. To her surprise, the ranch had been abandoned by her uncle and sister, and was now owned by a powerful ranching family, the Laframbois. Engaging in some espionage within the family, Beauregard was able to track down her uncle and sister to the island of Aurora Point, where they had gone to live in a commune that hunted red-tail deer. She built a quaint homestead for herself on the coast near the island, and set up a livelihood catching and selling seals. She also began to write to her sister frequently, though she did not visit in person. Beauregard was able to drastically improve her relations with her sister, and the two became good friends via pen, with Clara having come to accept her sister for who she was. Their uncle remained distant.   In 8076, Beauregard lost contact with her sister. After two months of failed attempts to reestablish this contact, Beauregard decided to go to the island to see for herself what had happened. With the assistance of two individuals, Isolde, a cleric of Lakatos, and Thalia, a paladin of a god of justice, she ventured to the island.   On the island, she met a third assistant, Odette Berange, whom had washed up on shore following a shipwreck. The four discovered a grisly sight: most of the island's villagers had gone insane at the hands of Malevolence 5, a machine created for the Trebai Ascendancy in the Twenty-Year War. Despite the destruction it had caused, Clara and Hoagy survived, and Beauregard was able to lead them back to safety. Though she became good friends with Isolde and Thalia, her relationship with Berange, who abandoned the group soon after the mission was completed, was unsatisfactory.

A New Temple to Deonea and Later Life

Of course I still feel like that confused little girl sometimes, even after becoming a high priestess. But now, my newfound confidence carries me to great heights. And, dare I say, I'm proud of what I've accomplished here.
Reunited with her sister and uncle, Beauregard constructed a larger house for the three of them, and continued to hunt and catch seals. She hired a therapist to help her family recover from the trauma they had experience on Aurora Point; a therapist which also ended up helping Beauregard and her uncle work through their bad blood. With this help, the two were able to reconcile their differences and healthily mourn the loss that had caused them so much pain.   The biggest problem that plagued Beauregard now was the knowledge that other women like her existed in the world- born in the incorrect body and forced to live a life of either lies, or ridicule. She was aware that not everyone was as fortunate as her. To solve this problem, she contacted her old friend, Scotta Malcatha, and decided to set up a new temple to Deonea on the once-again abandoned island of Aurora Point. With the goddess' blessing, she began and completed construction on the temple, with the help of hired labor. A large part of the funding was acquired through Malcatha's tribe's old riches, which she convinced her druids to donate to the cause.   Once the temple was complete, Beauregard began a series of trials to become a high priestess of Deonea. Convening directly with the goddess, she undertook several tasks, including rescuing women from abusive husbands, restoring a falsely accused noblewoman to power, and finally, finding and escorting a group of women born in the wrong body to the island. Upon Deonea's successful helping of these women, Beauregard officially became a high priestess of Deonea, with some of the women she had brought there choosing to remain as acolytes. She later married one of them, an Eripean woman named Rej'ala.
