Red Makovai
The Red Makovai were a dwarven people who historically occupied parts of the Western Commons. Though originally a subgroup of the Makovai, by the time of the Fifth Era the two peoples were ethnically distinct.
The group originated as a substantial gathering of Makovai criminals banished from their lands in the Makovai Mountains as a result of overcrowding. The people grew rapidly, and soon formed into separate tribes. While some of these tribes went to war with the neighbouring Ren Berig, others lived together in peace, and the two groups adopted some customs from each other. By the time of the Fifth Era, war between Red Makovai and Ren Berig tribes was uncommon.
The naming of the Red Makovai was often falsely believed to originate from the group's adoption of human sacrifice. In fact, the group's name likely came from the red sashes that Makovai criminals were forced to wear.
