Johnathan Kristopher Valeski (a.k.a. Joe Meriweather, Joe Valeski)
An ordinary boy from Anaheim, CA, Joe Meriweather's world, as he knows it, is torn apart and upended after his parents,
William Meriweather and
Eliza Meriweather, are killed by a
Lord of Betrayal, and his brother,
Jax Meriweather is abducted and seemingly killed by the same Lord of Betrayal. After the death of his parents, he is sent to the
Phoenix School for Higher Learning, and spends his first year at that school trying to master his immensely powerful
Thunderstorm abilities and break through the mental blocks he set upon himself after accidentally injuring a girl on his first day (!) while also trying to unmask the Lord of Betrayal who killed his parents. Thus, he must learn to reinvent himself, his purpose, and his role in the world in the face of a world-shaking threat, all while struggling to make himself known and respected in the world while he stands, perpetually,
In the Shadows of Gods.
Physical Description
Joe is a very physically fit and capable person, possessing above average agility and strength, even for a
Thyrian . His reflexes, speed, and strength are honed as a result of his experience as a star shortstop, built off of his natural Thyrian capabilities. However, whenever he uses his
Thunderstorm energy, Joe's right arm has the unusual trait of becoming translucent and blue by way of triggering
Overload since a small fraction of his total potential energy is equivalent to an Overload of energy in many of his peers.
Has a tendency to click his father's pen rapidly whenever he is thinking.
A Striker-Class Thyrian, therefore possessing an affinity for offensive spells. Naturally, however, he possesses Level 6 power at a mere age 13, when he should only possess Level 1 powers.
Generic Phoenix School for Higher Learning uniform. Tends to wear an Angels uniform because of his love for the team.
Has possession of a Matrix that houses Daemonicus's consciousness. Also possesses the Sword of Alpha after discovering it in the Arbor Mystici.
Mental characteristics
Joe, being an American Thyrian, is obligated to six years' education at the Phoenix School for Higher Learning , and thus far has completed one.
Joe has founded the
Watchbirds . In addition, he successfully discovered the Blade of Alpha and defeated the Lord of Betrayal towards the end of his first year at the Phoenix School.
After watching his parents, the Meriweathers, die before his eyes, Joe's mental state deteriorated rapidly and he became a shell of his former self, lacking more or less everything that had brought him so much in the ordinary world. As a result of seeing his parents die, as well as being attacked by the very same Lord of Betrayal who attacked him on school grounds, Joe resolved himself to take down the Lord once and for all and ensure that no other innocent lives were lost to the Lord's evil.
In addition, after forming the Watchbirds, Joe mistakenly convinced himself that Professor Gibson was, in fact, the Lord of Betrayal, resulting in a midnight scramble to unmask the PE Professor which ultimately ended up doing nothing but embarassing Joe. It is at this point that his single-minded drive to reveal the Lord's identity and overwhelming focus on this task is lessened, as a result of the sheer embarrasment of the whole debacle.
Is at first afraid of the Lord of Betrayal's armor, since it's just naturally fearsome, and becomes more so once he sees it kill his parents. He is afraid of it to the point where, upon seeing it in the library, he attacks it with no restraint. However, he does manage to overcome this fear by viewing the Lord as something to be conquered instead of something to be feared after his discovery of the Sword of Alpha.
In addition, Joe is mentally traumatized by and therefore averse to using his Thunderstorm energy in Conduits. This is because he, on his first day at the Phoenix School, accidently injured a girl and shut himself off from "the ocean of power" that he commands. It takes him most of his first year to even begin to use his Conduit powers, and it will take him many years more to learn how to use them to his full potential.
Extremely goal-driven, and is either interested or really bored by topics, no in between for him. Since he is averse and disbelieving in the Technoverse's ideals, he is seriously bored and pays no attention to any lectures on this topic. He only wants to research and learn as much as allows him to best complete his goals.
Much like the way he learns, Joe's morality is extremely goal-driven. Up until the point where he falsely accuses Professor Gibson of being the Lord of Betrayal, he is willing to do more or less anything to defeat the Lord of Betrayal, associating with gangs and engaging in the closest thing they have to corporate espionage. He mostly relies on Eric Powers for his moral questions but is willing to override the advice of his friend if he believes it will further his goals.
Personality Characteristics
Wants to defeat the
Lord of Betrayal for good. This is his singular focus, and his other motivations, such as finding the Sword of Alpha or the Lord's armor or forming the
Watchbirds , are only means to this singular end.
Very athletically proficient, and used to be academically proficient before his averseness to the Technoverse turned that proficiency to a weakness. Lacks control over his naturally immense Thunderstorm powers.
Loves making progress towards defeating the Lord of Betrayal, and the Los Angeles Angels. Likes his friends, though this is tied more to what they can do for his goal than he realizes. Hates the Lord of Betrayal. Hates "safety first".
Laser-focused. Won't give up on his goals. Wants to make the world fair to all Clans, and fights vehemently towards this end.. After his attempt to unmask Professor Gibson, he becomes more stable and gains humility in his journey to defeat the Lord, and after finding the Sword of Alpha, he sees how to defeat the Lord best and relearns his compassion and social awareness. This is because he sees the grandeur of the Sword and has to consider how worthy he is of such a weapon, and thus reverts mostly to the kind of person he was before to feel worthy of the Sword.
Literally stubborn about his goals to the point where he's willing to sacrifice everything else. While he is angry at the Technoverse (between his parents' death and the end of his first day at the Phoenix School) he is extremely rejective of any Technoverse beliefs. In his first month at the Phoenix School, he lacks direction, and in his first weeks as the leader of the
Watchbirds , he is rather rude and doesn't quite listen to his followers, thinking that he knows what is best to defeat the Lord.
As a result of his parents being killed by the Lord of Betrayal, a warrior from the Technoverse, which itself is a world he had never heard of, Joe developed an extreme aversion to the ideals and values of
Thyrians. Every time people attempt to tell him mow much greater the Technoverse is than the ordinary world, Joe tends to scoff and reject the notion of these ideals - he sees the Technoverse's peddling of itself as better than the ordinary world hypocritical, when it was only once that Technoverse figures and powers arrived that his parents were lost.
In addition, perhaps not consciously, but on some deeper level, Joe is afraid of joining the Technoverse and leaving the safe familiarity of the ordinary world (ironically, as he develops a hatred for
Lukas Gibson's now-famous phrase "safety first". He does not want to live in a world without his parents, and therefore despises the Technoverse because it is that world in its entirety. However, once the Lord of Betrayal resurfaces, Joe sees it as an opportunity to avenge his parents' death and must resort to using Technoverse technology to defeat his parents' murderers. Over the course of his first year at the
Phoenix School for Higher Learning with the
Watchbirds, Joe is able to see the good in the Technoverse, first merely on a practical level, and later in a genuine appreciation for it. By the end of ItSoG, while knowing that the Technoverse has its flaws, some minor and some major, Joe no longer hates it beyond any reasonable level, and accepts his place in it as one of the Guardians of Life (while, per
Kataryna Winter's advice, trying to embody both a
Thyrian and a
Human's ideals), setting him up for a brighter future in the Technoverse than he ever would have thought possible.
Pen clicking addict whenever he starts thinking, because his pen is really the last physical object he has from the greater world and also represents the legacy of his parents.
Social
Best friends with Lewis Edwards, though his apparent success leads the latter down a darker path. He's friends with Archangelo Rossi and by proxy Alphonse Taranto and Ni'Kola Prytison , though he really only knows the former well. Olivia Wereclaw and Eric Powers are two other friends of his, who both try to guide him in his endeavors out of friendship and kindness. Heather Rosethorne of the Black Ashes is a fellow "gang" leader who Joe associates with as a means to an end, though this working relationship has pretty much fractured as a result of his organization's rift between the BAs.
Deeply connected to the Meriweathers and later the Watchbirds, who become like a second family to him at school. Rejects the familial love of the Edwards at first but tries to learn to accept them at the end of his first year at the Phoenix School and begins to live with them.
After his parents are killed when he is only but a year old, Joe was adopted by the Meriweathers, and grew up with a brother, Jax, in an ordinary and carefree world. Thus, when he is turning 13, he is calm, friendly, and sociable, excelling both athletically and academically. He has many friends, few enemies, and is confident but not conceited about his abilities. However, when his parents are murdered by the Lord of Betrayal, he becomes dark, depressed, and angry at the world in general. When he creates the Watchbirds to fight the Lord of Betrayal, he, at first, believes that he is the only one who knows what's best for fulfilling his goals and is extremely egotistical in this. However, over the course of his many failures, he learns to become compassionate and humble about his powers again.
Adopted Son (Vital)
Towards William Meriweather
History
After Brandon Valeski and Erin Donovan disappeared a mere six years after the end of the Shadow's War, Mr. Meriweather adopted his good friend's now orphaned son and took him in as his own. Over the course of Joe's 13 years, much of the way he sees the world has been affected and shaped by Mr. Meriweather's teachings, and the relationship is one without which neither of them can function.
Nicknames & Petnames
Even though Brandon and Erin named their son "Johnathan", Mr. and Mrs. Meriweather disliked this name and thus took to calling their adopted son "Joe", which is the reason why Joe is called that today don't @ me
Legal Status
Joe is legally Mr. Meriweather's ward (I believe that's the right word).
History
Best friends from a young age. Joe relies on Lewis for a lot of intellectual support and answers, but Lewis, who is awed by Joe's "success" even after such a traumatizing event as losing his parents, wants to be as confident and successful as him. That will definitely not end bad for the both of them!
