Imperial Celestial Survey, Stellar Designation Protocol

The Galactic Empire instituted a comprehensive naming protocol for star systems and celestial bodies.   Star systems received names based on the central star itself, serving as a unique identifier. For instance, a star system might have been named "Citadel" after its star. In this case, "Citadel" represents both the star and the entire star system. Subsequently, any celestial bodies orbiting within the star system were designated using Roman numerals, arranged in ascending order based on their proximity to the star. This results in designations like Citadel I, Citadel II, Citadel III, Citadel IV, and so forth.   Moons in orbit around a planet were named after the planet they circled. These names followed the Greek alphabet, starting with Alpha for the closest moon and proceeding in sequence. An example is Citadel III Alpha and Citadel III Beta. In cases where a planet boasted a substantial number of moons, these moons were grouped and named accordingly, with each group assigned a Greek letter to designate its proximity to the planet. Roman numerals were then used as suffixes to differentiate individual moons within each group based on their relative distance from the planet, such as Alpha/I, Alpha/II, etc., followed by Beta/I, Beta/II, etc.   Upon colonization of a star system, planets were assigned names according to their significance. The primary and most densely populated planet in the system was named "Prime," followed by "Secundus," and so on. For instance, if Citadel III is the central and most important planet, its designation as Citadel Prime replaces the numerical order previously used. This practice ensured that names reflecting importance and hierarchy took precedence over numerical designations.   While the Imperial Naming Protocol remains widespread, the aftermath of the Galactic Civil War has led to minor adaptations in certain regions, accommodating local considerations.  

Sector Gazetteer

The sector gazetteer was originally established by the Imperial Celestial Survey during the era of the Galactic Empire. However, following the collapse of the empire, the responsibility for its upkeep and maintenance has been assumed by the Travellers Aid Society. This transition ensures the continued compilation and preservation of essential star system information within the gazetteer.   The sector gazetteer adheres to a standardized procedure for cataloging all identified star systems within a designated sector of space. Each sector is divided into 16 sub-sectors, and the listing sequence initiates with the Coreward (top) and Spinward (left) sector, systematically documenting all known star systems within coded columns. The entry format commences with the first four digits, providing precise spatial coordinates within the sector, followed by the name of the star or star system, capitalized signifiying population over one billion. Subsequently, the Universal World Profile for the primary world of each system is recorded, supplemented by concise descriptions or relevant notes. This meticulous organization ensures the comprehensive and orderly documentation of star systems within the sector gazetteer.
