Any Martian will tell you that the nations of
Mars are more tightly bound together than those of any other planet. The
Martian identity is a powerful symbol of this unity, rivaled only by the
Convocation and
Homefleet. To be Martian is not just about where one was born, but also about living the ideals of curiosity, reasoning and civic duty. Although the nuances differ, all nations of Mars strive to instill these ideals in their citizenry through lifelong education and experience.
Martian Ideals
Outside of Mars, Martians are often seen as excessively blunt, quick to criticize and stingy with praise. On the other hand, they are also seen as diligent and difficult to offend. These traits stem from the Martian ideals, which encourage speaking up and challenging ideas.
Individual Capacity
All Martians have a place in society that is best suited to their aptitudes. No-one is useless, and like water finds its level, all Martians will find their perfect vocation. Young Martians often try out several jobs before settling on a career.
Meritocracy
The best way to run society is via merit. In the same way no ideas are sacred, positions should not be, either. Martians take pride that anyone can serve in the highest of positions, no matter one's background.
Liberty
All Martians are free to express their opinions; conduct their lives as they please, both public and private; move anywhere on Mars or off it, if the destination allows; and be equipped with the ability to live their lives to the fullest via education and basic support.
Rational Thought
Logic and reason are critical to any Martian enterprise. Ideas should be questioned, refined, and if no longer necessary, discarded without attachment. Society is improved one debate at a time.
Peace on Mars
When the Convocation was founded at the conclusion of the Thousand Wars era, preventing more war was at the forefront of the assembled national leaders. They hoped that building deep economic ties, aligning laws and policy, and establishing places of international cooperation would create lasting peace. Equally important, however, was establishing the sense that everyone on Mars had a common history and a shared destiny.
Today, the Martian identity is as natural as breathing air. Most Martians have never known a time when Mars was divided amongst itself. It is easy to move to a different country on Mars, and many aspects of life are familiar: ideals, academies of Homefleet, organization of society. As the last memories of the wars fade into history, a unified Mars steps onto the stage of the Sol System, ready to defend her ideals and build a better tomorrow.
