Doan's Corners Barony
Doan’s Corners Barony
A barony of art, law, and delicate alliances.
Anchored in the culturally dense heart of Cleveland’s University Circle, Doan’s Corners Barony is a place of quiet beauty, rich Glamour, and meticulously enforced order. It spans some of the city’s most renowned artistic and academic institutions: the Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance Hall, Wade Lagoon, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, and the campus of Case Western Reserve University. While mortal artists and students wander the gardens and galleries unaware, Glamour blooms beneath their feet like hidden ivy.
Kithain are welcomed here, though rarely unobserved.
Leadership & Law
The barony is governed by Baron Veylon ap Liam, a Grump Sidhe whose deep love of mortal art is matched only by his fastidious devotion to Countess Tanaquill ni Gwydion. Though respected within Forest City County, Baron Veylon’s peers in the Moondog Barony tend to regard him as a pedantic fop—an opinion he meets not with defiance but with meticulously organized court fetes and Seelie receptions. “But he is hella gay,” Miss Jessa Slipknot once quipped, “and gay is hella in right now.”
The baron delegates enforcement of his laws to Lady Angelica Fleming, a steel-nerved Troll knight who leads her own oathcircle of protectors. Her presence is the true edge beneath the barony’s gentility. All Ravaging of mortals' Glamour within Doan’s Corners is strictly prohibited without written leave from the baron himself.
Key Locations
- People’s Promise Freehold: Hidden within the Armor Court of the Cleveland Museum of Art, this Freehold serves as the barony’s political and spiritual center.
- Case Western Reserve University: A seasonal engine of Glamour, especially during the autumn influx of new students, who inspire dreams and anxieties in equal measure.
- Severance Hall: Performances here occasionally stir Glamour storms strong enough to be seen across the Dreaming.
- The Cleveland Museum of Natural History: Technically under baronial jurisdiction, but long suspected to harbor ghosts, cursed artifacts, and hostile watchers. Fae visitors report a persistent sensation of being followed. Some believe the museum employs magi as staff astronomers.
Warning: The Cleveland Clinic is outside the barony's boundaries and strongly discouraged for Kithain visitation. Its campus is thick with Banality and whispered dangers.
Notable Residents & Visitors
- Fillion, a stately, non-binary Liam scribe, serves as the baron’s personal historian and speaker of decrees.
- Esther Galway, a Kinain docent at the art museum, is rumored to possess subtle magic that allows her to eject unwelcome visitors without ever raising her voice.
- The Topaz Serpent, a chimerical dragon of coiled beauty, slumbers beneath the museum’s foundations. It is said to stir when great art is made—or stolen.
- Sir Astavon ap Beaumayn, a prophetic Seer and envoy of Duke Gerrard d’Ivoire, visits the baron’s court with unsettling regularity. While many regard him with reverence, his presence always seems to sap the baron’s confidence. It is whispered that Astavon searches for something called “the Harbinger.”
Seasonal & Social Events
Doan’s Corners plays a central role in hosting the annual Verdant Gala, a celebration of Forest City County’s founding. While the event is technically co-organized with the Moondog Barony, the Gala often leans toward upscale elegance—more violin sonata than block party, much to the Moondogs’ chagrin. Common venues include the Agora Ballroom and the Cleveland Masonic Temple, chosen to balance both baronies’ influence.
Tone & Themes
- Aesthetic Glamour: The barony draws power from the presence of human creativity—art, music, architecture, and scholarly ambition all feed its Dreaming.
- Tense Refinement: Beneath its stately manners and gallery charm, Doan’s Corners is a place of tension: between Commoners and nobles, between Seelie tradition and hidden dangers, between Glamour and Banality.
- Thin Ice: Though outwardly peaceful, the barony exists under constant scrutiny—from Forest City, from the Moondogs, from Concordian politics, and from things that walk quietly through the Dreaming.
