Sir Astavon ap Beaumayn
Envoy of the Duchy of Buckeye, Seer of House Beaumayn
Sir Astavon ap Beaumayn is a name that stirs both reverence and quiet dread in the halls of Doan’s Corners. A Grump among Sidhe, though his appearance belies no age, Astavon is an Arcadian noble of immense prophetic ability and serves as a trusted envoy of Duke Gerrard d’Ivoire. His comings and goings are never announced but always expected; even Baron Veylon's meticulously kept calendar cannot anticipate the moments when Astavon will once again darken the barony's threshold.
Tall and imposing, Astavon bears the regal hauteur of the Beaumayn with an aura of detachment that feels colder than any sidelong slight. His garments are resplendent but severe: layered robes of deepest black with flowing trims of royal purple, glinting subtly with warding sigils stitched into their hems. Around his neck hangs a large amethyst medallion, carved into an eight-pointed star—the symbol of House Beaumayn. His eyes, violet and sharp, miss nothing; his long, raven-black hair is worn loose and wild, a rare affectation of untamed vanity in an otherwise disciplined countenance.
Astavon is most often found in quiet conversation with Baron Veylon or observing the workings of the court in silence, and his mere presence seems to sap the Baron's surety. The only other courtier known to command Astavon's respect is the Baron’s mortal husband, Arturo Sandoval—whom the Seer regards with an unusual fondness, often noting that his dreams are "brilliant, terrible, and tragically truthful."
Among the court, it is whispered that Astavon is not merely passing through Cleveland, but actively searching for something—or someone—whom he calls “the Harbinger.” Whether this Harbinger is a person, prophecy, or weapon of fate, none can say, but when asked, Astavon merely replies: “You’ll know them when they move the world.”
The only figure known to make Astavon falter, if ever so slightly, is the scribe Fillion. Observers have noted that their interactions are exceedingly formal, almost ritualistic, as if the two know something about one another that neither is willing to say aloud.
Astavon rarely acknowledges Commoners unless protocol demands it. He treats Kinain with tolerable neutrality but rarely sees them as anything more than dream-touched curiosities. This behavior has made him a controversial figure within Forest City County, where many Kithain chafe at his aloof disdain. However, none can deny the influence he wields in the Duchy of Buckeye—or how dangerous it would be to draw his ire.
Legacy
- Astavon believes in fated roles and preordained signs. He scans people’s words and dreams alike for omens, and when something (or someone) catches his attention, he becomes almost fanatically observant.
- In times of dispute between courts, Astavon acts as judge, executioner, and prophet all in one. He rarely speaks of politics openly, but his words have caused the rise and fall of entire noble households. If the Court of Doan’s Corners teeters too far from decorum, he will surely set it aright—whether by wisdom or curse.
- Astavon claims to see futures hidden in dreams, and he has a gift for interpreting strange symbols or riddles drawn from the Dreaming. Whether Kithain seek his insight or are drawn unwillingly into his gaze, they may find their secrets no longer entirely their own.
- Even those who resent him dare not provoke him. He walks with the protection of Duke Gerrard and is assumed to possess Gifts or Contracts that would spell ruin for any foolish enough to challenge him. Those navigating intrigue must tread lightly when his name enters the equation.
