Sayen the Undertaker
Not the bad guy you think he is
Sayen , the Undertaker
A Necromancer who only used his powers for the sake of good, Sayen would posthumously be awarded the honorific title of 'the Undertaker', as he famously slew Xander the Mad. Sayen often refused to refer to his Undead as minions: They often do little more than clean the house, and their master only gets fresh bodies from unmarked bandit graves. As most Necromancers do, Sayen did some undertaker work to fund his craft in the days he was still alive. One day, when Sayen's older brother David comes to visit, their mundane lives are shaken up by all too familiar rumors of a cult aiming to 'cleanse' the world of all they deem unclean... The Cult of Azdar. And the rumors turn out to be more then an old wives' tale...
Sayen and his brother discover a Cult hideout under the town, and that the Cultists have started threatening the villagers. They get captured in the process, but manage to escape and lure the Cultists to the surface. Now vulnerable, the town stands with Sayen and his Undead, and run the Azdar worshippers out of town. Knowing first-hand what kind of damage the Cult of Azdar can cause, David decides that enough is enough: it's time to stop the Cult of Azdar once and for all. Sayen, knowing he's both a target but capable of rivalling any number the Cult can throw at him, joins his brother in this quest. Their first lead: the traumatic events in Torkard that nearly killed the two brothers. The revisit to the burned remains of their home was confrontational, but led to an important discovery: this wasn't just narrow-minded villagers trying to burn them alive for Sayen's choice in magic. Several identifiers that the Cultists of Azdar carry on them proved that this was a calculated murder attempt by the Cult of Azdar. Sayen's intense anger and grief at the situation causes a surge of Necromantic magic to erupt from him, and unbeknownst to him, raisesall of the dead in a Cultist torture room underground. This reveals the town as one big Cultist hideout, and our heroes are forced to flee... But with important information in hand: these weren't just some madmen in Prylea, the Cult of Azdar does in fact exist and pose a threat.
Eventually, after following multiple leads: the group of 4 finds out that the Cult is planning to steal an immensely dangerous Dwarven superweapon... The Netherbane. It's a cannon with enough power to level any fortress by merely firing it once, and it fires a magical energy that will taint an area for millenia. It was powerful enough that the nations of the world all signed a treaty to never use it in war for fear of the innocent lives it could cost, and that the Dwarves sealed it away for eternity. Only a powerful surge of all elemental magics can break the seal. Xander Ivoryvale, the leader of the Cult, plans to steal it to shape the world in his image... And his image does not include anything but fair-skinned Humans of two genders. He has gathered 5 generals each holding powerful magic of one element, and he knows light-elemental magic himself.
Retrieving these plans and reading them, our heroes know that were he to break the seal on the chambers holding the weapon, the world would be doomed. The plans also confirmed the old tales that there were Cultists blending into society, waiting within droves of innocent people for Xander's command to strike and claim even more lives. Yet the heroes knew they could not stop this madman on their own: the Cult of Azdar was more numerous than they could ever imagine, and no nation had been able to sucessfully storm Xander's mighty fortress so far. And while Sayen was able to control a good number of Undead at a time with enough focus, he could not manage a horde great enough to mount an attack. However, the effort of several nations added to Sayen's Undead horde of the Cult's former victims could possibly create the opening they needed. And they now had the proof to show that the Cult threat wasn't just an old wives' tale. Sayen knew, however, that more Undead numbers on his side would be key to making his case. However, he was not powerful to control an Undead army on his own yet. So the group headed out to the Necropolis of Sylvenas first, hoping that the stories about Lord Aerendyl living on in undeath were true.
Managing to fight their way through the mindless Undead around the city, our heroes managed to enter the Necropolis. The whispers about the inhabitants of the town being mentally stuck in the Great War proved true: Through both wit, strength, and Sayen's knowledge on the subject, our heroes managed to reach the town hall. Carefully making their way to the room where the land's laws were once decided, the group discovered that indeed, Lord Aerendyl, now living on as a more powerful Revenant, still watched over Sylvenas. When the Elven aristocrat asked about the intentions of their visit, Sayen explained the situation in perfect honesty. Hearing his plea, Lord Aerendyl agreed to fight under the Necromancer's banner, leading to the inception of the small army that would soon lead to Xander's downfall.
Now being able to at least rival the Cult of Azdar's infamous numbers, Sayen suggested that they split up to convince the cities, to cover the immense ground needed as fast as possible. Time was of the essence: Sayen and David would convince half of the capitals to charge on the Cult with the scroll detailing the plans to steal the Netherbane, and Tamani and Avedir would convince the other half with the scroll detailing the undercover Cultists. Eventually, our heroes were successful with all but Valmont. However, the friends that Sayen made along the way would more then make up for these numbers. With Xander's fortress located and a camp set up near enough to mount an attack yet far enough to not fear the Cultists striking back: everything was set in motion for one final battle against the Cult of Azdar. Soon, the international army of misfits charged on Xander's fortress, evacuating innocents in the village during the attack where they could. With Xander's army held in a chokehold, Sayen and the other heroes charged straight for the fortress. With the Necromancer's personal horde, they fought through his elite soldiers to reach the leader of the Cult himself: the man who would go down in history as Xander the Mad. However, Xander had a plan: he magically sealed the door in front of Sayen's friends and horde, blocking them off from him. The fallen Paladin decided to take care of this massive thorn in his side himself: He challenged the Necromancer to a duel. Sayen gave the fallen Paladin one more chance to surrender, to which he infamously replied: 'Over my dead body. And you'll never get the chance to control it, Deathmonger. For Azdar!' David, Tamani and Avedir were forced to watch helplessly as Sayen battled Xander. It seemed like the mage was overpowering his opponent, but Xander had one more dirty trick up his sleeve... As the Necromancer struggled to push Xander's blade back with his rapier, Xander fired off a blast of light magic right through the Necromancer's chest. The three others screamed in horror as Sayen's lifeless body fell to the floor, but everyone forgot one thing...
Necromancers tend not to stay dead.
Before they set out, Sayen had already dreaded that the Cult would kill him. And he had discovered a way to only become a Lich upon his death instead of during his life: seal all but one part of his soul in a phylactery, and have his final breath release this last part of his soul to it. This last part rushed to the phylactery as Xander turned to the door and grinned, releasing the seal to finish off the other three and thinking his victory was now assured. Unbeknownst to anyone, Sayen opened his eyes, both his body and eyes glowing with magic. The Necromancer rose once more, and floated up from the ground to strike at his murderer. Its said that Xander turned in surprise, right before Sayen's rapier pierced right through his shoulder pad and pinned the Paladin to a nearby wall. With this madman still alive, our hero could not rest yet.
