The Unsparked

Workers of Sangrithar | Founders of the Technos

The Unsparked are individuals who do not possess Sangrithar’s hereditary magical force, the Spark. While every family in Sangrithar has a Sparkheir—their firstborn child—not all members of that family inherit the Spark. Some bloodlines have even lost their ability to pass it on entirely. The Unsparked thus comprise the majority of the population: siblings, parents, descendants of broken bloodlines, and those severed from magic by ancestral consequence.

Despite their lack of magical inheritance, The Unsparked are not a lower caste by default, though how they are treated depends deeply on regional and cultural values.

Roles Across Cultures

In the Indovene Confederacy, Unsparked are treated with measured respect. Their value lies in reliability and resilience—especially in warfare. Archons, whose Sparkmagic amplifies the physical traits of those around them, depend heavily on Unsparked troops who can be enhanced with superhuman qualities. These Unsparked warriors can thus become a terrible standing army that puts the Sparkmages themselves at little risk.

In Armonia, The Unsparked form the logistical and administrative backbone of society. With Medicos devoted to healing and protection, the burden of commerce, agriculture, communication, and civic order falls on The Unsparked. This symbiotic relationship is not seen as subservience but as essential balance.

In harsher environments like the Eradite Wastes, however, The Unsparked are viewed as liabilities. Survival in these lands is tenuous, and those without magic are often seen as burdens. Many clans limit their family size, opting for only a single child, leaving no room for non-magical offspring. Some of the Wastes' most infamous techno-clans rose from families that rejected this brutal arithmetic.

Yuri and Severed Blood

Not all Unsparked are born so by chance of birth order. Some hail from once-powerful bloodlines that have been cut off from the Spark through the use of Yuri—a forbidden drug that amplifies the Spark of the user but renders them, and all their descendants, incapable of passing on the Spark.

These individuals, known as Severed Blood, often carry both shame and rage. Their ancestors wielded terrifying magic, but their inheritance is only memory. Among these Severed Bloodlines, the drive to reclaim power by technological means is particularly intense.

The Techno Revolution

For centuries, The Unsparked served quietly—administrators, soldiers, scholars, or spies. But as magic solidified the dominance of hereditary elites, discontent simmered. The Unsparked whispers manifested into a world-altering realization: If we cannot inherit magic, we will invent it.

From hidden workshops and isolated enclaves, young Unsparked thinkers began to challenge the idea that Sparkmages were nature’s chosen. They studied physics, metallurgy, architecture, and alchemical theory—to understand the keys of the Universe and claim their own power with that understanding. This movement gave birth to the Technos, and ultimately, the SparkTap—a device capable of drawing the Spark from a willing mage and binding it into Artifact form. The door to Bloodline Magic creeped open in the hands of the Technos.

A World Tipping Toward Balance

As societies across Sangrithar begin to adopt technologies that replicate or replace Sparkmagic, the centuries-old power balance begins to shift. Why rely on a Sparkmage’s limited conjuration when a Techno-engineered floodgates can irrigate a valley? How can technology equipped masses create boons for whole societies that in the past had to grovel to the great Houses for support?

These questions are no longer theoretical. Unsparked engineers and Techno-militants increasingly hold positions of economic and strategic importance. Their tools rival bloodline magic. Their ideologies threaten Bloodline supremacy. Their ambition is unbound.
