Uldeen Hills
Pronunciation: UL-deen
Map Index: C-6
Location: East central Aorlan coastline
Geography: The Uldeen Hills boast a serene landscape of gentle, grassy knolls punctuated by mixed hardwood trees gracing the valleys. To the north, the mouth of the mighty Arn River enters Noroc Bay. Along the coast, steep eroding bedrock cliffs prevent access to the sea.
Primary Population: Garuun
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Arn, Ceodari, Shenn, Valtauri, Varynn
Climate: The temperate climate dictates the rhythm of the land. Long cold winters with frequent snowfalls leave the land quiet under a white blanket. As spring warms the land, wildflowers spring forth adorning the undulating terrain. Summers usher in warmth and ample rainfall, nurturing the thriving flora. Finally autumn brings a great cooling, painting the the landscape with a rich spectrum of fall wildflowers and colorful trees.
Wildlife: The wildlife of the Uldeen Hills is as diverse as it is captivating. Roaming these cool, temperate grasslands are herds of grazing deer and elk, alongside swift foxes darting through the underbrush. Birds of prey soar above, while rabbits and other small mammals scuttle through the verdant expanse. The hills echo with the call of songbirds and the occasional hoot of an owl, painting a vibrant portrait of natural harmony.
Humanoids: Within this picturesque setting, the Garuun gnomes have long safeguarded and molded the destiny of these hills. Their major city and capitol, Garuun Togr, stands perched high atop a large rocky prominence, surrounded by sturdy stone walls. Inside the walls, visitors are greeted by a confusing maze of labyrinthine streets, filled with a colorful and chaotic mosaic of eccentric gnomish buildings. The design of the whole city exemplifies a society of scarcely controlled disorder. Beneath the city lies a large intricate network of interconnecting subterranean tunnels, halls, shops, and storage rooms. Being a people who are quite comfortable underground, the gnomes have haphazardly tunneled deep under the hilltop city. While most of the Garuun gnomes live in Garuun Togr, there are a few small settlements outside the city walls. Most of these are built underground where they can be easily defended. Visitors should exercise caution as the areas around these settlements usually contain traps meant to discourage outsiders from threatening the gnomes peace.
Monsters: Small tribes of trouble making hobgoblins live in hand dug underground dwellings. A small tribe of gnolls live in the far eastern lands near the sea. Griffons have been reported in the southwest near the border with Mithtaur.
History: During the Great Cataclysm, the Uldeen Hills were spared the brunt of devastation that besieged other regions. The rising sea claimed the eastern lowlands, altering the landscape, yet the chaos storms bypassed this northern reach. Mild earthquakes trembled through the hills, causing fleeting disruptions but minimal lasting damage.
Today: This resilient land, guarded by the enigmatic Garuun gnomes, stands as a testament to nature's enduring beauty and the fortitude of its inhabitants amidst the ebb and flow of cataclysmic events.
